The spectroscopy measurement is one of main pathways for exploring and understanding the nature. Today, it seems that racing artificial intelligence will remould its styles. The algorithms contained in huge neural networks are capable of substituting many of expensive and complex components of spectrum instruments. In this work, we presented a smart machine learning strategy on the measurement of absorbance curves, and also initially verified that an exceedingly-simplified equipment is sufficient to meet the needs for this strategy. Further, with its simplicity, the setup is expected to infiltrate into many scientific areas in versatile forms.
We present an ongoing R&D activity for machine-learning-assisted navigation through detectors to be used for track reconstruction. We investigate different approaches of training neural networks for surface prediction and compare their results. This work is carried out in the context of the ACTS tracking toolkit.
Design of new experiments, as well as upgrade of ongoing ones, is a continuous process in the experimental high energy physics. Since the best solution is a trade-off between different kinds of limitations, a quick turn over is necessary to evaluate physics performance for different techniques in different configurations. Two typical problems which slow down evaluation of physics performance for particular approaches to calorimeter detector technologies and configurations are: - Emulating particular detector properties including raw detector response together with a signal processing chain to adequately simulate a calorimeter response for different signal and background conditions. This includes combining detector properties obtained from the general Geant simulation with properties obtained from different kinds of bench and beam tests of detector and electronics prototypes. - Building an adequate reconstruction algorithm for physics reconstruction of the detector response which is reasonably tuned to extract the most of the performance provided by the given detector configuration. Being approached from the first principles, both problems require significant development efforts. Fortunately, both problems may be addressed by using modern machine learning approaches, that allow a combination of available details of the detector techniques into corresponding higher level physics performance in a semi-automated way. In this paper, we discuss the use of advanced machine learning techniques to speed up and improve the precision of the detector development and optimisation cycle, with an emphasis on the experience and practical results obtained by applying this approach to epitomising the electromagnetic calorimeter design as a part of the upgrade project for the LHCb detector at LHC.
BESIII is a currently running tau-charm factory with the largest samples of on threshold charm meson pairs, directly produced charmonia and some other unique datasets at BEPCII collider. Machine learning techniques have been employed to improve the performance of BESIII software. The studies for reweighing MC, particle identification and cluster reconstruction for the CGEM (Cylindrical Gas Electron Multiplier) inner tracker are presented.
Extreme Learning Machine is a powerful classification method very competitive existing classification methods. It is extremely fast at training. Nevertheless, it cannot perform face verification tasks properly because face verification tasks require comparison of facial images of two individuals at the same time and decide whether the two faces identify the same person. The structure of Extreme Leaning Machine was not designed to feed two input data streams simultaneously, thus, in 2-input scenarios Extreme Learning Machine methods are normally applied using concatenated inputs. However, this setup consumes two times more computational resources and it is not optimized for recognition tasks where learning a separable distance metric is critical. For these reasons, we propose and develop a Siamese Extreme Learning Machine (SELM). SELM was designed to be fed with two data streams in parallel simultaneously. It utilizes a dual-stream Siamese condition in the extra Siamese layer to transform the data before passing it along to the hidden layer. Moreover, we propose a Gender-Ethnicity-Dependent triplet feature exclusively trained on a variety of specific demographic groups. This feature enables learning and extracting of useful facial features of each group. Experiments were conducted to evaluate and compare the performances of SELM, Extreme Learning Machine, and DCNN. The experimental results showed that the proposed feature was able to perform correct classification at 97.87% accuracy and 99.45% AUC. They also showed that using SELM in conjunction with the proposed feature provided 98.31% accuracy and 99.72% AUC. They outperformed the well-known DCNN and Extreme Leaning Machine methods by a wide margin.
We apply deep learning methods as a track finding algorithm to the PANDA Forward Tracking Stations (FTS). The problem is divided into three steps: The first step relies on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that is trained as a binary classifier to build track segments in three different parts of the FTS, namely FT1,FT2, FT3,FT4, and FT5,FT6. The ANN accepts hit pairs as an input and outputs a probability that they are on the same track or not. The second step builds 3D track segments from the 2D ones and is based on the geometry of the detector. The last step is to match the track segments from the different parts of the FTS to form a full track candidate, and is based on a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). The RNN is used also as a binary classifier that outputs the probability that the combined track segments are a true track or not. The performance of the algorithm is judged based on the purity, efficiency and the ghost ratio of the reconstructed tracks. The purity specifies which fraction of hits in one track come from the correct particle. The correct particle is the particle, which produces the majority of hits in the track. The efficiency is defined as the ratio of the number of correctly reconstructed tracks to all generated tracks.
