Network analysis defines a number of centrality measures to identify the most central nodes in a network. Fast computation of those measures is a major challenge in algorithmic network analysis. Aside from closeness and betweenness, Katz centrality is one of the established centrality measures. In this paper, we consider the problem of computing rankings for Katz centrality. In particular, we propose upper and lower bounds on the Katz score of a given node. While previous approaches relied on numerical approximation or heuristics to compute Katz centrality rankings, we construct an algorithm that iteratively improves those upper and lower bounds until a correct Katz ranking is obtained. We extend our algorithm to dynamic graphs while maintaining its correctness guarantees. Experiments demonstrate that our static graph algorithm outperforms both numerical approaches and heuristics with speedups between 1.5x and 3.5x, depending on the desired quality guarantees. Our dynamic graph algorithm improves upon the static algorithm for update batches of less than 10000 edges. We provide efficient parallel CPU and GPU implementations of our algorithms that enable near real-time Katz centrality computation for graphs with hundreds of millions of nodes in fractions of seconds.
Dynamic Connectivity is a fundamental algorithmic graph problem, motivated by a wide range of applications to social and communication networks and used as a building block in various other algorithms, such as the bi-connectivity and the dynamic minimal spanning tree problems. In brief, we wish to maintain the connected components of the graph under dynamic edge insertions and deletions. In the sequential case, the problem has been well-studied from both theoretical and practical perspectives. However, much less is known about efficient concurrent solutions to this problem. This is the gap we address in this paper. We start from one of the classic data structures used to solve this problem, the Euler Tour Tree. Our first contribution is a non-blocking single-writer implementation of it. We leverage this data structure to obtain the first truly concurrent generalization of dynamic connectivity, which preserves the time complexity of its sequential counterpart, but is also scalable in practice. To achieve this, we rely on three main techniques. The first is to ensure that connectivity queries, which usually dominate real-world workloads, are non-blocking. The second non-trivial technique expands the above idea by making all queries that do not change the connectivity structure non-blocking. The third ingredient is applying fine-grained locking for updating the connected components, which allows operations on disjoint components to occur in parallel. We evaluate the resulting algorithm on various workloads, executing on both real and synthetic graphs. The results show the efficiency of each of the proposed optimizations; the most efficient variant improves the performance of a coarse-grained based implementation on realistic scenarios up to 6x on average and up to 30x when connectivity queries dominate.
{it SimRank} is a classic measure of the similarities of nodes in a graph. Given a node $u$ in graph $G =(V, E)$, a {em single-source SimRank query} returns the SimRank similarities $s(u, v)$ between node $u$ and each node $v in V$. This type of queries has numerous applications in web search and social networks analysis, such as link prediction, web mining, and spam detection. Existing methods for single-source SimRank queries, however, incur query cost at least linear to the number of nodes $n$, which renders them inapplicable for real-time and interactive analysis. { This paper proposes prsim, an algorithm that exploits the structure of graphs to efficiently answer single-source SimRank queries. prsim uses an index of size $O(m)$, where $m$ is the number of edges in the graph, and guarantees a query time that depends on the {em reverse PageRank} distribution of the input graph. In particular, we prove that prsim runs in sub-linear time if the degree distribution of the input graph follows the power-law distribution, a property possessed by many real-world graphs. Based on the theoretical analysis, we show that the empirical query time of all existing SimRank algorithms also depends on the reverse PageRank distribution of the graph.} Finally, we present the first experimental study that evaluates the absolute errors of various SimRank algorithms on large graphs, and we show that prsim outperforms the state of the art in terms of query time, accuracy, index size, and scalability.
The Fenwick tree is a classical implicit data structure that stores an array in such a way that modifying an element, accessing an element, computing a prefix sum and performing a predecessor search on prefix sums all take logarithmic time. We introduce a number of variants which improve the classical implementation of the tree: in particular, we can reduce its size when an upper bound on the array element is known, and we can perform much faster predecessor searches. Our aim is to use our variants to implement an efficient dynamic bit vector: our structure is able to perform updates, ranking and selection in logarithmic time, with a space overhead in the order of a few percents, outperforming existing data structures with the same purpose. Along the way, we highlight the pernicious interplay between the arithmetic behind the Fenwick tree and the structure of current CPU caches, suggesting simple solutions that improve performance significantly.
Like [1], we present an algorithm to compute the simulation of a query pattern in a graph of labeled nodes and unlabeled edges. However, our algorithm works on a compressed graph grammar, instead of on the original graph. The speed-up of our algorithm compared to the algorithm in [1] grows with the size of the graph and with the compression strength.
Betweenness centrality is a classic measure that quantifies the importance of a graph element (vertex or edge) according to the fraction of shortest paths passing through it. This measure is notoriously expensive to compute, and the best known algorithm runs in O(nm) time. The problems of efficiency and scalability are exacerbated in a dynamic setting, where the input is an evolving graph seen edge by edge, and the goal is to keep the betweenness centrality up to date. In this paper we propose the first truly scalable algorithm for online computation of betweenness centrality of both vertices and edges in an evolving graph where new edges are added and existing edges are removed. Our algorithm is carefully engineered with out-of-core techniques and tailored for modern parallel stream processing engines that run on clusters of shared-nothing commodity hardware. Hence, it is amenable to real-world deployment. We experiment on graphs that are two orders of magnitude larger than previous studies. Our method is able to keep the betweenness centrality measures up to date online, i.e., the time to update the measures is smaller than the inter-arrival time between two consecutive updates.
