This paper proposes a low order geometrically exact flexible beam formulation based on the utilisation of generic beam shape functions to approximate distributed kinematic properties of the deformed structure. The proposed nonlinear beam shapes approach is in contrast to the majority of geometrically nonlinear treatments in the literature in which element based --- and hence high order --- discretisations are adopted. The kinematic quantities approximated specifically pertain to shear and extensional gradients as well as local orientation parameters based on an arbitrary set of globally referenced attitude parameters. In developing the dynamic equations of motion, an Euler angle parameterisation is selected as it is found to yield fast computational performance. The resulting dynamic formulation is closed using an example shape function set satisfying the single generic kinematic constraint. The formulation is demonstrated via its application to the modelling of a series of static and dynamic test cases of both simple and non-prismatic structures; the simulated results are verified using MSC Nastran and an element-based intrinsic beam formulation. Through these examples it is shown that the nonlinear beam shapes approach is able to accurately capture the beam behaviour with a very minimal number of system states.

Three objections to the canonical analytical treatment of covariant electromagnetic theory are presented: (i) only half of Maxwells equations are present upon variation of the fundamental Lagrangian; (ii) the trace of the canonical energy-momentum tensor is not equivalent to the trace of the observed energy-momentum tensor; (iii) the Belinfante symmetrization procedure exists separate from the analytical approach in order to obtain the known observed result. It is shown that the analytical construction from Noethers theorem is based on manipulations that were developed to obtain the compact forms of the theory presented by Minkowski and Einstein; presentations which were developed before the existence of Noethers theorem. By reformulating the fundamental Lagrangian, all of the objections are simultaneously relieved. Variation of the proposed Lagrangian yields the complete set of Maxwells equations in the Euler-Lagrange equation of motion, and the observed energy-momentum tensor directly follows from Noethers theorem. Previously unavailable symmetries and identities that follow naturally from this procedure are also discussed.
The accurate modeling of the dielectric properties of water is crucial for many applications in physics, computational chemistry and molecular biology. This becomes possible in the framework of nonlocal electrostatics, for which we propose a novel formulation allowing for numerical solutions for the nontrivial molecular geometries arising in the applications mentioned before. Our approach is based on the introduction of a secondary field, $psi$, which acts as the potential for the rotation free part of the dielectric displacement field ${bf D}$. For many relevant models, the dielectric function of the medium can be expressed as the Greens function of a local differential operator. In this case, the resulting coupled Poisson (-Boltzmann) equations for $psi$ and the electrostatic potential $phi$ reduce to a system of coupled PDEs. The approach is illustrated by its application to simple geometries.
This paper presents a novel total Lagrangian cell-centred finite volume formulation of geometrically exact beams with arbitrary initial curvature undergoing large displacements and finite rotations. The choice of rotation parametrisation, the mathematical formulation of the beam kinematics, conjugate strain measures and the linearisation of the strong form of governing equations is described. The finite volume based discretisation of the computational domain and the governing equations for each computational volume are presented. The discretised integral form of the equilibrium equations are solved using a block-coupled Newton-Raphson solution procedure. The efficacy of the proposed methodology is presented by comparing the simulated numerical results with classic benchmark test cases available in the literature. The objectivity of strain measures for the current formulation and mesh convergence studies for both initially straight and curved beam configurations are also discussed.

In this paper, we consider an imperfect finite beam lying on a nonlinear foundation, whose dimensionless stiffness is reduced from $1$ to $k$ as the beam deflection increases. Periodic equilibrium solutions are found analytically and are in good agreement with a numerical resolution, suggesting that localized buckling does not appear for a finite beam. The equilibrium paths may exhibit a limit point whose existence is related to the imperfection size and the stiffness parameter $k$ through an explicit condition. The limit point decreases with the imperfection size while it increases with the stiffness parameter. We show that the decay/growth rate is sensitive to the restoring force model. The analytical results on the limit load may be of particular interest for engineers in structural mechanics
Within the framework of Hilbert space theory, we derive a maximum-power variational principle applicable to classical spontaneous radiation from prescribed harmonic current sources. Results are first derived in the paraxial limit, then appropriately generalized to non-paraxial situations. The techniques were developed within the context of undulator radiation from relativistic electron beams, but are more broadly applicable.
