In this paper we study finite semiprimitive permutation groups, that is, groups in which each normal subgroup is transitive or semiregular. We give bounds on the order, base size, minimal degree, fixity, and chief length of an arbitrary finite semiprimitive group in terms of its degree. To establish these bounds, we classify finite semiprimitive groups that induce the alternating or symmetric group on the set of orbits of an intransitive normal subgroup.

Let $V$ be a finite vector space over a finite field of order $q$ and of characteristic $p$. Let $Gleq GL(V)$ be a $p$-solvable completely reducible linear group. Then there exists a base for $G$ on $V$ of size at most $2$ unless $q leq 4$ in which case there exists a base of size at most $3$. The first statement extends a recent result of Halasi and Podoski and the second statement generalizes a theorem of Seress. An extension of a theorem of Palfy and Wolf is also given.
The distinguishing number of $G leqslant sym(Omega)$ is the smallest size of a partition of $Omega$ such that only the identity of $G$ fixes all the parts of the partition. Extending earlier results of Cameron, Neumann, Saxl and Seress on the distinguishing number of finite primitive groups, we show that all imprimitive quasiprimitive groups have distinguishing number two, and all non-quasiprimitive semiprimitive groups have distinguishing number two, except for $mathrm{GL}(2, 3)$ acting on the eight non-zero vectors of $mathbb F_2^3$, which has distinguishing number three.
We show that the minimal base size $b(G)$ of a finite primitive permutation group $G$ of degree $n$ is at most $2 (log |G|/log n) + 24$. This bound is asymptotically best possible since there exists a sequence of primitive permutation groups $G$ of degrees $n$ such that $b(G) = lfloor 2 (log |G|/log n) rceil - 2$ and $b(G)$ is unbounded. As a corollary we show that a primitive permutation group of degree $n$ that does not contain the alternating group $mathrm{Alt}(n)$ has a base of size at most $max{sqrt{n} , 25}$.

In this paper, we show that all Coleman automorphisms of a finite group with self-central minimal non-trivial characteristic subgroup are inner; therefore the normalizer property holds for these groups. Using our methods we show that the holomorph and wreath product of finite simple groups, among others, have no non-inner Coleman automorphisms. As a further application of our theorems, we provide partial answers to questions raised by M. Hertweck and W. Kimmerle. Furthermore, we characterize the Coleman automorphisms of extensions of a finite nilpotent group by a cyclic $p$-group. Lastly, we note that class-preserving automorphisms of 2-power order of some nilpotent-by-nilpotent groups are inner, extending a result by J. Hai and J. Ge.
