We consider string theory on AdS$_3$ $times$ (S$^3$ $times$ S$^3$ $times$ S$^1)/mathbb Z_2$, a background supporting $mathcal N=(3,3)$ spacetime supersymmetry. We propose that string theory on this background is dual to the symmetric product orbifold of $mathcal S_0/mathbb Z_2$ where $mathcal S_0$ is a theory of four free fermions and one free boson. We show that the BPS spectra of the two sides of the duality match precisely. Furthermore, we compute the elliptic genus of the dual CFT and that of the supergravity limit of string theory and demonstrate that they match, hence providing non-trivial support for the holographic proposal.

We study the origin of electroweak symmetry under the assumption that $SU(4)_{rm C} times SU(2)_{rm L} times SU(2)_{rm R}$ is realized on a five-dimensional space-time. The Pati-Salam type gauge symmetry is reduced to $SU(3)_{rm C} times SU(2)_{rm L} times U(1)_{rm R} times U(1)_{rm B-L}$ by orbifold breaking mechanism on the orbifold $S^1/Z_2$. The breakdown of residual gauge symmetries occurs radiatively via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, such that the $U(1)_{rm R} times U(1)_{rm B-L}$ symmetry is broken down to $U(1)_{rm Y}$ by the vacuum expectation value of an $SU(2)_{rm L}$ singlet scalar field and the $SU(2)_{rm L} times U(1)_{rm Y}$ symmetry is broken down to the electric one $U(1)_{rm EM}$ by the vacuum expectation value of an $SU(2)_{rm L}$ doublet scalar field regarded as the Higgs doublet. The negative Higgs squared mass term is originated from an interaction between the Higgs doublet and an $SU(2)_{rm L}$ singlet scalar field as a Higgs portal. The vacuum stability is recovered due to the contributions from Kaluza-Klein modes of gauge bosons.
We study confining strings in ${cal{N}}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills theory in the semiclassical regime on $mathbb{R}^{1,2} times mathbb{S}^1$. Static quarks are expected to be confined by double strings composed of two domain walls - which are lines in $mathbb{R}^2$ - rather than by a single flux tube. Each domain wall carries part of the quarks chromoelectric flux. We numerically study this mechanism and find that double-string confinement holds for strings of all $N$-alities, except for those between fundamental quarks. We show that, for $N_c ge 5$, the two domain walls confining unit $N$-ality quarks attract and form non-BPS bound states, collapsing to a single flux line. We determine the $N$-ality dependence of the string tensions for $2 le N_c le 10$. Compared to known scaling laws, we find a weaker, almost flat $N$-ality dependence, which is qualitatively explained by the properties of BPS domain walls. We also quantitatively study the behavior of confining strings upon increasing the $mathbb{S}^1$ size by including the effect of virtual $W$-bosons and show that the qualitative features of double-string confinement persist.

Two anomalously weak transitions within the $2 ^3{rm S}_1~-~3 ^3{rm P}_J$ manifolds in $^3$He have been identified. Their transition strengths are measured to be 1,000 times weaker than that of the strongest transition in the same group. This dramatic suppression of transition strengths is due to the dominance of the hyperfine interaction over the fine structure interaction. An alternative selection rule based on textit{IS}-coupling (where the nuclear spin is first coupled to the total electron spin) is proposed. This provides qualitative understanding of the transition strengths. It is shown that the small deviations from the textit{IS}-coupling model are fully accounted for by an exact diagonalization of the strongly interacting states.
The ${^3{rm He}}(alpha,gamma){^7{rm Be}}$ and ${^3{rm H}}(alpha,gamma){^7{rm Li}}$ astrophysical $S$ factors are calculated within the no-core shell model with continuum using a renormalized chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction. The ${^3{rm He}}(alpha,gamma){^7{rm Be}}$ astrophysical $S$ factors agree reasonably well with the experimental data while the ${^3{rm H}}(alpha,gamma){^7{rm Li}}$ ones are overestimated. The seven-nucleon bound and resonance states and the $alpha+{^3{rm He}}/{^3{rm H}}$ elastic scattering are also studied and compared with experiment. The low-lying resonance properties are rather well reproduced by our approach. At low energies, the $s$-wave phase shift, which is non-resonant, is overestimated.

The maximally supersymmetric Freund-Rubin vacua for eleven dimensional supergravity, namely $AdS_4 times S^7$ and $AdS_7 times S^4$, admit an analytic continuation to $S^4 times S^7$. From the full harmonic expansions on $S^4 times S^7$, it is shown that by analytical continuation to either $AdS_4$, or to $AdS_7$, the detailed structure of the Kaluza-Klein spectrum can be obtained for both vacua in a unified manner. The results are shown to be related by a simple rule which interchanges the spacetime and internal space representations. We also obtain the linearized field equations for the singletons and doubletons but they can be gauged away by fixing certain Stuckelberg shift symmetries inherited from the Kaluza-Klein reduction.
