Matching of images and analysis of shape differences is traditionally pursued by energy minimization of paths of deformations acting to match the shape objects. In the Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping (LDDMM) framework, iterative gradient descents on the matching functional lead to matching algorithms informally known as Beg algorithms. When stochasticity is introduced to model stochastic variability of shapes and to provide more realistic models of observed shape data, the corresponding matching problem can be solved with a stochastic Beg algorithm, similar to the finite temperature string method used in rare event sampling. In this paper, we apply a stochastic model compatible with the geometry of the LDDMM framework to obtain a stochastic model of images and we derive the stochastic version of the Beg algorithm which we compare with the string method and an expectation-maximization optimization of posterior likelihoods. The algorithm and its use for statistical inference is tested on stochastic LDDMM landmarks and images.

Depth scans acquired from different views may contain nuisances such as noise, occlusion, and varying point density. We propose a novel Signature of Geometric Centroids descriptor, supporting direct shape matching on the scans, without requiring any preprocessing such as scan denoising or converting into a mesh. First, we construct the descriptor by voxelizing the local shape within a uniquely defined local reference frame and concatenating geometric centroid and point density features extracted from each voxel. Second, we compare two descriptors by employing only corresponding voxels that are both non-empty, thus supporting matching incomplete local shape such as those close to scan boundary. Third, we propose a descriptor saliency measure and compute it from a descriptor-graph to improve shape matching performance. We demonstrate the descriptors robustness and effectiveness for shape matching by comparing it with three state-of-the-art descriptors, and applying it to object/scene reconstruction and 3D object recognition.
We propose a self-supervised approach to deep surface deformation. Given a pair of shapes, our algorithm directly predicts a parametric transformation from one shape to the other respecting correspondences. Our insight is to use cycle-consistency to define a notion of good correspondences in groups of objects and use it as a supervisory signal to train our network. Our method does not rely on a template, assume near isometric deformations or rely on point-correspondence supervision. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by using it to transfer segmentation across shapes. We show, on Shapenet, that our approach is competitive with comparable state-of-the-art methods when annotated training data is readily available, but outperforms them by a large margin in the few-shot segmentation scenario.

Traditional image recognition involves identifying the key object in a portrait-type image with a single object focus (ILSVRC, AlexNet, and VGG). More recent approaches consider dense image recognition - segmenting an image with appropriate bounding boxes and performing image recognition within these bounding boxes (Semantic segmentation). The Visual Genome dataset [5] is an attempt to bridge these various approaches to a cohesive dataset for each subtask - bounding box generation, image recognition, captioning, and a new operation: scene graph generation. Our focus is on using such scene graphs to perform graph search on image databases to holistically retrieve images based on a search criteria. We develop a method to store scene graphs and metadata in graph databases (using Neo4J) and to perform fast approximate retrieval of images based on a graph search query. We process more complex queries than single object search, e.g. girl eating cake retrieves images that contain the specified relation as well as variations.
We propose a new approach to determine correspondences between image pairs in the wild under large changes in illumination, viewpoint, context, and material. While other approaches find correspondences between pairs of images by treating the images independently, we instead condition on both images to implicitly take account of the differences between them. To achieve this, we introduce (i) a spatial attention mechanism (a co-attention module, CoAM) for conditioning the learned features on both images, and (ii) a distinctiveness score used to choose the best matches at test time. CoAM can be added to standard architectures and trained using self-supervision or supervised data, and achieves a significant performance improvement under hard conditions, e.g. large viewpoint changes. We demonstrate that models using CoAM achieve state of the art or competitive results on a wide range of tasks: local matching, camera localization, 3D reconstruction, and image stylization.
Image-to-image translation (I2I) aims to transfer images from a source domain to a target domain while preserving the content representations. I2I has drawn increasing attention and made tremendous progress in recent years because of its wide range of applications in many computer vision and image processing problems, such as image synthesis, segmentation, style transfer, restoration, and pose estimation. In this paper, we provide an overview of the I2I works developed in recent years. We will analyze the key techniques of the existing I2I works and clarify the main progress the community has made. Additionally, we will elaborate on the effect of I2I on the research and industry community and point out remaining challenges in related fields.
