Large-scale research endeavors can be hindered by logistical constraints limiting the amount of available data. For example, global ecological questions require a global dataset, and traditional sampling protocols are often too inefficient for a small research team to collect an adequate amount of data. Citizen science offers an alternative by crowdsourcing data collection. Despite growing popularity, the community has been slow to embrace it largely due to concerns about quality of data collected by citizen scientists. Using the citizen science project Floating Forests (http://floatingforests.org), we show that consensus classifications made by citizen scientists produce data that is of comparable quality to expert generated classifications. Floating Forests is a web-based project in which citizen scientists view satellite photographs of coastlines and trace the borders of kelp patches. Since launch in 2014, over 7,000 citizen scientists have classified over 750,000 images of kelp forests largely in California and Tasmania. Images are classified by 15 users. We generated consensus classifications by overlaying all citizen classifications and assessed accuracy by comparing to expert classifications. Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) was calculated for each threshold (1-15), and the threshold with the highest MCC was considered optimal. We showed that optimal user threshold was 4.2 with an MCC of 0.400 (0.023 SE) for Landsats 5 and 7, and a MCC of 0.639 (0.246 SE) for Landsat 8. These results suggest that citizen science data derived from consensus classifications are of comparable accuracy to expert classifications. Citizen science projects should implement methods such as consensus classification in conjunction with a quantitative comparison to expert generated classifications to avoid concerns about data quality.

In many data sets, crucial elements co-exist with non-essential ones and noise. For data represented as networks in particular, several methods have been proposed to extract a network backbone, i.e., the set of most important links. However, the question of how the resulting compressed views of the data can effectively be used has not been tackled. Here we address this issue by putting forward and exploring several systematic procedures to build surrogate data from various kinds of temporal network backbones. In particular, we explore how much information about the original data need to be retained alongside the backbone so that the surrogate data can be used in data-driven numerical simulations of spreading processes. We illustrate our results using empirical temporal networks with a broad variety of structures and properties.

We present an integrated approach to analyse the multi-lead ECG data using the frame work of multiplex recurrence networks (MRNs). We explore how their intralayer and interlayer topological features can capture the subtle variations in the recurrence patterns of the underlying spatio-temporal dynamics. We find MRNs from ECG data of healthy cases are significantly more coherent with high mutual information and less divergence between respective degree distributions. In cases of diseases, significant differences in specific measures of similarity between layers are seen. The coherence is affected most in the cases of diseases associated with localized abnormality such as bundle branch block. We note that it is important to do a comprehensive analysis using all the measures to arrive at disease-specific patterns. Our approach is very general and as such can be applied in any other domain where multivariate or multi-channel data are available from highly complex systems.
Quantum Moves is a citizen science game that investigates the ability of humans to solve complex physics challenges that are intractable for computers. During the launch of Quantum Moves in April 2016 the games leaderboard function broke down resulting in a no leaderboard game experience for some players for a couple of days (though their scores were still displayed). The subsequent quick fix of an all-time Top 5 leaderboard, and the following long-term implementation of a personalized relative-position (infinite) leaderboard provided us with a unique opportunity to compare and investigate the effect of different leaderboard implementations on player performance in a points-driven citizen science game. All three conditions were live sequentially during the games initial influx of more than 150.000 players that stemmed from global press attention on Quantum Moves due the publication of a Nature paper about the use of Quantum Moves in solving a specific quantum physics problem. Thus, it has been possible to compare the three conditions and their influence on the performance (defined as a players quality of game play related to a high-score) of over 4500 new players. These 4500 odd players in our three leaderboard-conditions have a similar demographic background based upon the time-window over which the implementations occurred and controlled against Player ID tags. Our results placed Condition 1 experience over condition 3 and in some cases even over condition 2 which goes against the general assumption that leaderboards enhance gameplay and its subsequent overuse as a an oft-relied upon element that designers slap onto a game to enhance said appeal. Our study thus questions the use of leaderboards as general performance enhancers in gamification contexts and brings some empirical rigor to an often under-reported but overused phenomenon.
The liver performs critical physiological functions, including metabolizing and removing substances, such as toxins and drugs, from the bloodstream. Hepatotoxicity itself is intimately linked to abnormal hepatic transport and hepatotoxicity remains the primary reason drugs in development fail and approved drugs are withdrawn from the market. For this reason, we propose to analyze, across liver compartments, the transport kinetics of fluorescein-a fluorescent marker used as a proxy for drug molecules-using intravital microscopy data. To resolve the transport kinetics quantitatively from fluorescence data, we account for the effect that different liver compartments (with different chemical properties) have on fluoresceins emission rate. To do so, we develop ordinary differential equation transport models from the data where the kinetics are related to the observable fluorescence levels by measurement parameters that vary across different liver compartments. On account of the steep non-linearities in the kinetics and stochasticity inherent to the model, we infer kinetic and measurement parameters by generalizing the method of parameter cascades. For this application, the method of parameter cascades ensures fast and precise parameter estimates from noisy time traces.

John Desmond Bernal (1901-1970) was one of the most eminent scientists in molecular biology, and also regarded as the founding father of the Science of Science. His book The Social Function of Science laid the theoretical foundations for the discipline. In this article, we summarize four chief characteristics of his ideas in the Science of Science: the socio-historical perspective, theoretical models, qualitative and quantitative approaches, and studies of science planning and policy. China has constantly reformed its scientific and technological system based on research evidence of the Science of Science. Therefore, we analyze the impact of Bernal Science-of-Science thoughts on the development of Science of Science in China, and discuss how they might be usefully taken still further in quantitative studies of science.
