Yang-Mills instantons are solitonic particles in d=4+1 dimensional gauge theories. We construct and analyse the quantum Hall states that arise when these particles are restricted to the lowest Landau level. We describe the ground state wavefunctions for both Abelian and non-Abelian quantum Hall states. Although our model is purely bosonic, we show that the excitations of this 4d quantum Hall state are governed by the Nekrasov partition function of a certain five dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory with Chern-Simons term. The partition function can also be interpreted as a variant of the Hilbert series of the instanton moduli space, counting holomorphic sections rather than holomorphic functions. It is known that the Hilbert series of the instanton moduli space can be rewritten using mirror symmetry of 3d gauge theories in terms of Coulomb branch variables. We generalise this approach to include the effect of a five dimensional Chern-Simons term. We demonstrate that the resulting Coulomb branch formula coincides with the corresponding Higgs branch Molien integral which, in turn, reproduces the standard formula for the Nekrasov partition function.

The holographic Weyl semimetal is a model of a strongly coupled topological semi-metal. A topological quantum phase transition separates a topological phase with non-vanishing anomalous Hall conductivity from a trivial state. We investigate how this phase transition depends on the parameters of the scalar potential (mass and quartic self coupling) finding that the quantum phase transition persists for a large region in parameter space. We then compute the axial Hall conductivity. The algebraic structure of the axial anomaly predicts it to be 1/3 of the electric Hall conductivity. We find that this holds once a non-trivial renormalization effect on the external axial gauge fields is taken into account. Finally we show that the phase transition also occurs in a top-down model based on a consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity.

The dichotomy between fermions and bosons is at the root of many physical phenomena, from metallic conduction of electricity to super-fluidity, and from the periodic table to coherent propagation of light. The dichotomy originates from the symmetry of the quantum mechanical wave function to the interchange of two identical particles. In systems that are confined to two spatial dimensions particles that are neither fermions nor bosons, coined anyons, may exist. The fractional quantum Hall effect offers an experimental system where this possibility is realized. In this paper we present the concept of anyons, we explain why the observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect almost forces the notion of anyons upon us, and we review several possible ways for a direct observation of the physics of anyons. Furthermore, we devote a large part of the paper to non-abelian anyons, motivating their existence from the point of view of trial wave functions, giving a simple exposition of their relation to conformal field theories, and reviewing several proposals for their direct observation.
In this contribution, we present an introduction to the physical principles underlying the quantum Hall effect. The field theoretic approach to the integral and fractional effect is sketched, with some emphasis on the mechanism of electromagnetic gauge anomaly cancellation by chiral degrees of freedom living on the edge of the sample. Applications of this formalism to the design and theoretical interpretation of interference experiments are outlined.
The lowest-Landau-level anyon model becomes nonperiodic in the statistics parameter when the finite size of the attached flux tubes is taken into account. The finite-size effects cause the inverse proportional relation between the critical filling factor and the statistics parameter to be nonperiodically continued in the screening regime, where the fluxes are anti-parallel to the external magnetic field -- at critical filling, the external magnetic field is entirely screened by the mean magnetic field associated with the flux tubes. A clustering argument is proposed to select particular values of the statistics parameter. In this way, IQHE and FQHE fillings are obtained in terms of gapped nondegenerate LLL-anyonic wave functions. Jains series are reproduced without the need to populate higher Landau levels. New FQHE series are proposed, like, in particular, the particle-hole complementary series of the Laughlin one. For fast-rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, a corresponding clustering argument yields particular fractional filling series.

We study a system of electrons moving on a noncommutative plane in the presence of an external magnetic field which is perpendicular to this plane. For generality we assume that the coordinates and the momenta are both noncommutative. We make a transformation from the noncommutative coordinates to a set of commuting coordinates and then we write the Hamiltonian for this system. The energy spectrum and the expectation value of the current can then be calculated and the Hall conductivity can be extracted. We use the same method to calculate the phase shift for the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Precession measurements could allow strong upper limits to be imposed on the noncommutativity coordinate and momentum parameters $Theta$ and $Xi$.
