We study a problem of fundamental importance to ICNs, namely, minimizing routing costs by jointly optimizing caching and routing decisions over an arbitrary network topology. We consider both source routing and hop-by-hop routing settings. The respective offline problems are NP-hard. Nevertheless, we show that there exist polynomial time approximation algorithms producing solutions within a constant approximation from the optimal. We also produce distributed, adaptive algorithms with the same approximation guarantees. We simulate our adaptive algorithms over a broad array of different topologies. Our algorithms reduce routing costs by several orders of magnitude compared to prior art, including algorithms optimizing caching under fixed routing.

We propose that clusters interconnected with network topologies having minimal mean path length will increase their overall performance for a variety of applications. We approach our heuristic by constructing clusters of up to 36 nodes having Dragonfly, torus, ring, Chvatal, Wagner, Bidiakis and several other topologies with minimal mean path lengths and by simulating the performance of 256-node clusters with the same network topologies. The optimal (or sub-optimal) low-latency network topologies are found by minimizing the mean path length of regular graphs. The selected topologies are benchmarked using ping-pong messaging, the MPI collective communications, and the standard parallel applications including effective bandwidth, FFTE, Graph 500 and NAS parallel benchmarks. We established strong correlations between the clusters performances and the network topologies, especially the mean path lengths, for a wide range of applications. In communication-intensive benchmarks, clusters with optimal network topologies out-perform those with mainstream topologies by several folds. It is striking that a mere adjustment of the network topology suffices to reclaim performance from the same computing hardware.
The ever-continuing explosive growth of on-demand content requests has imposed great pressure on mobile/wireless network infrastructures. To ease congestion in the network and increase perceived user experience, caching popular content closer to the end-users can play a significant role and as such this issue received significant attention over the last few years. Additionally, energy efficiency is treated as a fundamental requirement in the design of next-generation mobile networks. However, there has been little attention to the overlapping area between energy efficiency and network caching especially when considering multipath routing. To this end, this paper proposes an energy-efficient caching with multipath routing support. The proposed scheme provides a joint anchoring of popular content into a set of potential caching nodes with optimized multi-path support whilst ensuring a balance between transmission and caching energy cost. The proposed model also considers different content delivery modes, such as multicast and unicast. Two separated Integer-Linear Programming (ILP) models are formulated for each delivery mode. To tackle the curse of dimensionality we then provide a greedy simulated annealing algorithm, which not only reduces the time complexity but also provides a competitive performance as ILP models. A wide set of numerical investigations has shown that the proposed scheme is more energy-efficient compared with other widely used approaches in caching under the premise of network resource limitation.
We consider a dense, ad hoc wireless network, confined to a small region. The wireless network is operated as a single cell, i.e., only one successful transmission is supported at a time. Data packets are sent between sourcedestination pairs by multihop relaying. We assume that nodes self-organise into a multihop network such that all hops are of length d meters, where d is a design parameter. There is a contention based multiaccess scheme, and it is assumed that every node always has data to send, either originated from it or a transit packet (saturation assumption). In this scenario, we seek to maximize a measure of the transport capacity of the network (measured in bit-meters per second) over power controls (in a fading environment) and over the hop distance d, subject to an average power constraint. We first argue that for a dense collection of nodes confined to a small region, single cell operation is efficient for single user decoding transceivers. Then, operating the dense ad hoc wireless network (described above) as a single cell, we study the hop length and power control that maximizes the transport capacity for a given network power constraint.

In the Internet of Things (IoT) networks, caching is a promising technique to alleviate energy consumption of sensors by responding to users data requests with the data packets cached in the edge caching node (ECN). However, without an efficient status update strategy, the information obtained by users may be stale, which in return would inevitably deteriorate the accuracy and reliability of derived decisions for real-time applications. In this paper, we focus on striking the balance between the information freshness, in terms of age of information (AoI), experienced by users and energy consumed by sensors, by appropriately activating sensors to update their current status. Particularly, we first depict the evolutions of the AoI with each sensor from different users perspective with time steps of non-uniform duration, which are determined by both the users data requests and the ECNs status update decision. Then, we formulate a non-uniform time step based dynamic status update optimization problem to minimize the long-term average cost, jointly considering the average AoI and energy consumption. To this end, a Markov Decision Process is formulated and further, a dueling deep R-network based dynamic status update algorithm is devised by combining dueling deep Q-network and tabular R-learning, with which challenges from the curse of dimensionality and unknown of the environmental dynamics can be addressed. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm by comparing it with five baseline deep reinforcement learning algorithms and policies.
The performance of distributed and data-centric applications often critically depends on the interconnecting network. Applications are hence modeled as virtual networks, also accounting for resource demands on links. At the heart of provisioning such virtual networks lies the NP-hard Virtual Network Embedding Problem (VNEP): how to jointly map the virtual nodes and links onto a physical substrate network at minimum cost while obeying capacities. This paper studies the VNEP in the light of parameterized complexity. We focus on tree topology substrates, a case often encountered in practice and for which the VNEP remains NP-hard. We provide the first fixed-parameter algorithm for the VNEP with running time $O(3^r (s+r^2))$ for requests and substrates of $r$ and $s$ nodes, respectively. In a computational study our algorithm yields running time improvements in excess of 200x compared to state-of-the-art integer programming approaches. This makes it comparable in speed to the well-established ViNE heuristic while providing optimal solutions. We complement our algorithmic study with hardness results for the VNEP and related problems.
