We investigate the spectrum of finite-length carbon nanotubes in the presence of onsite and nearest-neighbor superconducting pairing terms. A one-dimensional ladder-type lattice model is developed to explore the low-energy spectrum and the nature of the electronic states. We find that zero energy edge states can emerge in zigzag class carbon nanotubes as a combined effect of curvature-induced Dirac point shift and strong superconducting coupling between nearest-neighbor sites. The chiral symmetry of the system is exploited to define a winding number topological invariant. The associated topological phase diagram shows regions with nontrivial winding number in the plane of chemical potential and superconducting nearest-neighbor pair potential (relative to the onsite pair potential). A one-dimensional continuum model reveals the topological origin of the zero energy edge states: A bulk-edge correspondence is proven, which shows that the condition for nontrivial winding number and that for the emergence of edge states are identical. For armchair class nanotubes, the presence of edge states in the superconducting gap depends on the nanotubes boundary shape. For the minimal boundary condition, the emergence of the subgap states can also be deduced from the winding number.

Various properties of the energy band structures (electronic, phonon, etc.), including systematic band degeneracy, sticking and extremes, following from the full line group symmetry of the single-wall carbon nanotubes are established. The complete set of quantum numbers consists of quasi momenta (angular and linear or helical) and parities with respect to the z-reversal symmetries and, for achiral tubes, the vertical plane. The assignation of the electronic bands is performed, and the generalized Bloch symmetry adapted eigen functions are derived. The most important physical tensors are characterized by the same set of quantum numbers. All this enables application of the presented exhaustive selection rules. The results are discussed by some examples, e.g. allowed interband transitions, conductivity, Raman tensor, etc.
Indium Arsenide (InAs) near surface quantum wells (QWs) are ideal for the fabrication of semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures given that they allow for a strong hybridization between the two-dimensional states in the quantum well and the ones in the superconductor. In this work we present results for InAs QWs in the quantum Hall regime placed in proximity of superconducting NbTiN. We observe a negative downstream resistance with a corresponding reduction of Hall (upstream) resistance. We analyze the experimental data using the Landauer-B{u}ttiker formalism, generalized to allow for Andreev reflection processes. Our analysis is consistent with a lower-bound for the averaged Andreev conversion of about 15%. We attribute the high efficiency of Andreev conversion in our devices to the large transparency of the InAs/NbTiN interface and the consequent strong hybridization of the QH edge modes with the states in the superconductor.

The electron-phonon matrix element for edge states of carbon nanotubes and graphene at zigzag edges is calculated for obtaining renormalized energy dispersion of the edge states. Self-energy correction by electron-phonon interaction contributes to the energy dispersion of edge states whose energy bandwidth is similar to phonon energy. Since the energy-uncertainty of the edge state is larger than temperature, we conclude that the single-particle picture of the edge state in not appropriate when the electron-phonon interaction is taken into account. The longitudinal acoustic phonon mode contributes to the matrix element through the on-site deformation potential because the wavefunction of the edge state has an amplitude only on one of the two sublattices. The on-site deformation potentials for the longitudinal and in-plane tangential optical phonon modes are enhanced at the boundary. The results of local density of states are compared with the recent experimental data of scanning tunneling spectroscopy.
Semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes are classified into two types by means of orbital angular momentum of valley state, which is useful to study their low energy electronic properties in finite-length. The classification is given by an integer $d$, which is the greatest common divisor of two integers $n$ and $m$ specifying the chirality of nanotubes, by analyzing cutting lines. For the case that $d$ is equal to or greater than four, two lowest subbands from two valleys have different angular momenta with respect to the nanotube axis. Reflecting the decoupling of two valleys, discrete energy levels in finite-length nanotubes exhibit nearly fourfold degeneracy and its small lift by the spin-orbit interaction. For the case that $d$ is less than or equal to two, in which two lowest subbands from two valleys have the same angular momentum, discrete levels exhibit lift of fourfold degeneracy reflecting the coupling of two valleys. Especially, two valleys are strongly coupled when the chirality is close to the armchair chirality. An effective one-dimensional lattice model is derived by extracting states with relevant angular momentum, which reveals the valley coupling in the eigenstates. A bulk-edge correspondence, relationship between number of edge states and the winding number calculated in the corresponding bulk system, is analytically shown by using the argument principle, which enables us to estimate the number of edge states from the bulk property. The number of edge states depends not only on the chirality but also on the shape of boundary.

We compute the tunneling density of states of doped multi-wall nanotubes including disorder and electron-electron interactions. A non-conventional Coulomb blockade reflecting nonperturbative Altshuler-Aronov-Lee power-law zero-bias anomalies is found, in accordance with recent experimental results. The presence of a boundary implies a universal doubling of the boundary exponent in the diffusive limit.
