The possibility of driving phase transitions in low-density condensates through the loss of phase coherence alone has far-reaching implications for the study of quantum phases of matter. This has inspired the development of tools to control and explore the collective properties of condensate phases via phase fluctuations. Electrically-gated oxide interfaces, ultracold Fermi atoms, and cuprate superconductors, which are characterized by an intrinsically small phase-stiffness, are paradigmatic examples where these tools are having a dramatic impact. Here we use light pulses shorter than the internal thermalization time to drive and probe the phase fragility of the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+delta}$ cuprate superconductor, completely melting the superconducting condensate without affecting the pairing strength. The resulting ultrafast dynamics of phase fluctuations and charge excitations are captured and disentangled by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This work demonstrates the dominant role of phase coherence in the superconductor-to-normal state phase transition and offers a benchmark for non-equilibrium spectroscopic investigations of the cuprate phase diagram.

The large ($10^2 - 10^5$) and strongly temperature dependent resistive anisotropy $eta = (sigma_{ab}/sigma_c)^{1/2}$ of cuprates perhaps holds the key to understanding their normal state in-plane $sigma_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $sigma_{c}$ conductivities. It can be shown that $eta$ is determined by the ratio of the phase coherence lengths $ell_i$ in the respective directions: $sigma_{ab}/sigma_c = ell_{ab}^2/ell_{c}^2$. In layered crystals in which the out-of-plane transport is incoherent, $ell_{c}$ is fixed, equal to the interlayer spacing. As a result, the T-dependence of $eta$ is determined by that of $ell_{ab}$, and vice versa, the in-plane phase coherence length can be obtained directly by measuring the resistive anisotropy. We present data for hole-doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ ($6.3 < y < 6.9$) and $Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta }$ ($0 < x leq 0.55$) and show that $sigma_{ab}$ of crystals with different doping levels can be well described by a two parameter universal function of the in-plane phase coherence length. In the electron-doped $Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-y}$, the dependence $sigma_{ab}(eta)$ indicates a crossover from incoherent to coherent transport in the c-direction.
A pivotal step toward understanding unconventional superconductors would be to decipher how superconductivity emerges from the unusual normal state upon cooling. In the cuprates, traces of superconducting pairing appear above the macroscopic transition temperature $T_c$, yet extensive investigation has led to disparate conclusions. The main difficulty has been the separation of superconducting contributions from complex normal state behaviour. Here we avoid this problem by measuring the nonlinear conductivity, an observable that is zero in the normal state. We uncover for several representative cuprates that the nonlinear conductivity vanishes exponentially above $T_c$, both with temperature and magnetic field, and exhibits temperature-scaling characterized by a nearly universal scale $T_0$. Attempts to model the response with the frequently evoked Ginzburg-Landau theory are unsuccessful. Instead, our findings are captured by a simple percolation model that can also explain other properties of the cuprates. We thus resolve a long-standing conundrum by showing that the emergence of superconductivity in the cuprates is dominated by their inherent inhomogeneity.
Using a dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo approximation, we investigate the effect of local disorder on the stability of d-wave superconductivity including the effect of electronic correlations in both particle-particle and particle-hole channels. With increasing impurity potential, we find an initial rise of the critical temperature due to an enhancement of anti-ferromagnetic spin correlations, followed by a decrease of Tc due to scattering from impurity-induced moments and ordinary pairbreaking. We discuss the weak initial dependence of Tc on impurity concentration found in comparison to experiments on cuprates.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high resolution X-ray diffraction are combined to study the interplay between electronic and lattice structures in controlling the superconductivity in cuprates with a model charge-compensated CaxLa1-xBa1.75-xLa0.25+xCu3Oy (0<x<0.5, y=7.13) system. In spite of a large change in Tc, the doped holes, determined by the Cu L and O K XAS, hardly show any variation with the x. On the other hand, the CuO2 plaquette size shows a systematic change due to different size of substituted cations. The results provide a direct evidence for the chemical pressure being a key parameter for controlling the superconducting ground state of the cuprates.
Being homologue to the new, Fe-based type of high-temperature superconductors, CeFePO exhibits magnetism, Kondo and heavy-fermion phenomena. We experimentally studied the electronic structure of CeFePO by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In particular, contributions of the Ce 4f-derived states and their hybridization to the Fe 3d bands were explored using both symmetry selection rules for excitation and their photoionization cross-section variations as a function of photon energy. It was experimentally found - and later on confirmed by LDA as well as DMFT calculations - that the Ce 4f states hybridize to the Fe 3d states of d_{3z^2-r^2} symmetry near the Fermi level that discloses their participation in the occurring electron-correlation phenomena and provides insight into mechanism of superconductivity in oxopnictides.
