In this paper, we develop a framework for an innovative perceptive mobile (i.e. cellular) network that integrates sensing with communication, and supports new applications widely in transportation, surveillance and environmental sensing. Three types of sensing methods implemented in the base-stations are proposed, using either uplink or downlink multiuser communication signals. The required changes to system hardware and major technical challenges are briefly discussed. We also demonstrate the feasibility of estimating sensing parameters via developing a compressive sensing based scheme and providing simulation results to validate its effectiveness.

In this paper, we develop a framework for a novel perceptive mobile/cellular network that integrates radar sensing function into the mobile communication network. We propose a unified system platform that enables downlink and uplink sensing, sharing the same transmitted signals with communications. We aim to tackle the fundamental sensing parameter estimation problem in perceptive mobile networks, by addressing two key challenges associated with sophisticated mobile signals and rich multipath in mobile networks. To extract sensing parameters from orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and spatial division multiple access (SDMA) communication signals, we propose two approaches to formulate it to problems that can be solved by compressive sensing techniques. Most sensing algorithms have limits on the number of multipath signals for their inputs. To reduce the multipath signals, as well as removing unwanted clutter signals, we propose a background subtraction method based on simple recursive computation, and provide a closed-form expression for performance characterization. The effectiveness of these methods is validated in simulations.
Mobile network is evolving from a communication-only network towards the one with joint communication and radio/radar sensing (JCAS) capabilities, that we call perceptive mobile network (PMN). Radio sensing here refers to information retrieval from received mobile signals for objects of interest in the environment surrounding the radio transceivers. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey for systems and technologies that enable JCAS in PMN, with a focus on works in the last ten years. Starting with reviewing the work on coexisting communication and radar systems, we highlight their limits on addressing the interference problem, and then introduce the JCAS technology. We then set up JCAS in the mobile network context, and envisage its potential applications. We continue to provide a brief review for three types of JCAS systems, with particular attention to their differences on the design philosophy. We then introduce a framework of PMN, including the system platform and infrastructure, three types of sensing operations, and signals usable for sensing, and discuss required system modifications to enable sensing on current communication-only infrastructure. Within the context of PMN, we review stimulating research problems and potential solutions, organized under eight topics: mutual information, waveform optimization, antenna array design, clutter suppression, sensing parameter estimation, pattern analysis, networked sensing under cellular topology, and sensing-assisted secure communication. This paper provides a comprehensive picture for the motivation, methodology, challenges, and research opportunities of realizing PMN. The PMN is expected to provide a ubiquitous radio sensing platform and enable a vast number of novel smart applications.
Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) facilitates the deployment of critical applications with stringent QoS requirements, latency in particular. This paper considers the problem of jointly planning the availability of computational resources at the edge, the slicing of mobile network and edge computation resources, and the routing of heterogeneous traffic types to the various slices. These aspects are intertwined and must be addressed together to provide the desired QoS to all mobile users and traffic types still keeping costs under control. We formulate our problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) and we define a heuristic, named Neighbor Exploration and Sequential Fixing (NESF), to facilitate the solution of the problem. The approach allows network operators to fine tune the network operation cost and the total latency experienced by users. We evaluate the performance of the proposed model and heuristic against two natural greedy approaches. We show the impact of the variation of all the considered parameters (viz., different types of traffic, tolerable latency, network topology and bandwidth, computation and link capacity) on the defined model. Numerical results demonstrate that NESF is very effective, achieving near-optimal planning and resource allocation solutions in a very short computing time even for large-scale network scenarios.
Due to explosive growth of online video content in mobile wireless networks, in-network caching is becoming increasingly important to improve the end-user experience and reduce the Internet access cost for mobile network operators. However, caching is a difficult problem due to the very large number of online videos and video requests, limited capacity of caching nodes, and limited bandwidth of in-network links. Existing solutions that rely on static configurations and average request arrival rates are insufficient to handle dynamic request patterns effectively. In this paper, we propose a dynamic collaborative video caching framework to be deployed in mobile networks. We decompose the caching problem into a content placement subproblem and a source-selection subproblem. We then develop SRS (System capacity Reservation Strategy) to solve the content placement subproblem, and LinkShare, an adaptive traffic-aware algorithm to solve the source selection subproblem. Our framework supports congestion avoidance and allows merging multiple requests for the same video into one request. We carry extensive simulations to validate the proposed schemes. Simulation results show that our SRS algorithm achieves performance within 1-3% of the optimal values and LinkShare significantly outperforms existing solutions.
A communication setup is considered where a transmitter wishes to convey a message to a receiver and simultaneously estimate the state of that receiver through a common waveform. The state is estimated at the transmitter by means of generalized feedback, i.e., a strictly causal channel output, and the known waveform. The scenario at hand is motivated by joint radar and communication, which aims to co-design radar sensing and communication over shared spectrum and hardware. For the case of memoryless single receiver channels with i.i.d. time-varying state sequences, we fully characterize the capacity-distortion tradeoff, defined as the largest achievable rate below which a message can be conveyed reliably while satisfying some distortion constraints on state sensing. We propose a numerical method to compute the optimal input that achieves the capacity-distortion tradeoff. Then, we address memoryless state-dependent broadcast channels (BCs). For physically degraded BCs with i.i.d. time-varying state sequences, we characterize the capacity-distortion tradeoff region as a rather straightforward extension of single receiver channels. For general BCs, we provide inner and outer bounds on the capacity-distortion region, as well as a sufficient condition when this capacity-distortion region is equal to the product of the capacity region and the set of achievable distortions. A number of illustrative examples demonstrates that the optimal co-design schemes outperform conventional schemes that split the resources between sensing and communication.
