Coulomb matrix elements are needed in all studies in solid-state theory that are based on Hubbard-type multi-orbital models. Due to symmetries, the matrix elements are not independent. We determine a set of independent Coulomb parameters for a $d$-shell and a $f$-shell and all point groups with up to $16$ elements ($O_h$, $O$, $T_d$, $T_h$, $D_{6h}$, and $D_{4h}$). Furthermore, we express all other matrix elements as a function of the independent Coulomb parameters. Apart from the solution of the general point-group problem we investigate in detail the spherical approximation and first-order corrections to the spherical approximation.

Ground state properties of multi-orbital Hubbard models are investigated by the auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo method. A Monte Carlo technique generalized to the multi-orbital systems is introduced and examined in detail. The algorithm contains non-trivial cases where the negative sign problem does not exist. We investigate one-dimensional systems with doubly degenerate orbitals by this new technique. Properties of the Mott insulating state are quantitatively clarified as the strongly correlated insulator, where the charge gap amplitude is much larger than the spin gap. The insulator-metal transitions driven by the chemical potential shows a universality class with the correlation length exponent $ u=1/2$, which is consistent with the scaling arguments. Increasing level split between two orbitals drives crossover from the Mott insulator with high spin state to the band insulator with low spin state, where the spin gap amplitude increases and becomes closer to the charge gap. Experimental relevance of our results especially to Haldane materials is discussed.
We present a strategy to alleviate the sign problem in continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) simulations of the dynamical-mean-field-theory (DMFT) equations for the spin-orbit-coupled multiorbital Hubbard model. We first identify the combinations of rotationally invariant Hund coupling terms present in the relativistic basis which lead to a severe sign problem. Exploiting the fact that the average sign in CTQMC depends on the choice of single-particle basis, we propose a bonding-antibonding basis $V_{j3/2mathrm{BA}}$ which shows an improved average sign compared to the widely used relativistic basis for most parameter sets investigated. We then generalize this procedure by introducing a stochastic optimization algorithm that exploits the space of single-particle bases and show that $V_{j3/2mathrm{BA}}$ is very close to optimal within the parameter space investigated. Our findings enable more efficient DMFT simulations of materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.
In strongly correlated multi-orbital systems, various ordered phases appear. In particular, the orbital order in iron-based superconductors attracts much attention since it is considered to be the origin of the nematic state. In order to clarify the essential condition for realizing orbital orders, we study simple two-orbital ($d_{xz}$, $d_{yz}$) Hubbard model. We find that the orbital order, which corresponds to the nematic order, appears due to the vertex corrections even in the two-orbital model. Thus, $d_{xy}$ orbital is not essential to realize the nematic orbital order. The obtained orbital order depends on the orbital dependence and the topology of fermi surfaces. We also find that another type of orbital order, which is rotated $45^circ$, appears in the heavily hole-doped case.
We investigate multi-band Hubbard models for the three iron 3$d$-$t_{2g}$ bands and the two iron 3$d$-$e_g$ bands in ${rm La O Fe As}$ by means of the Gutzwiller variational theory. Our analysis of the paramagnetic ground state shows that neither Hartree--Fock mean-field theories nor effective spin models describe these systems adequately. In contrast to Hartree--Fock-type approaches, the Gutzwiller theory predicts that antiferromagnetic order requires substantial values of the local Hunds-rule exchange interaction. For the three-band model, the antiferromagnetic moment fits experimental data for a broad range of interaction parameters. However, for the more appropriate five-band model, the iron $e_g$ electrons polarize the $t_{2g}$ electrons and they substantially contribute to the ordered moment.

We study non-local correlations in a three-orbital Hubbard model defined on an extended one-dimensional chain using determinant quantum Monte Carlo and density matrix renormalization group methods. We focus on a parameter with robust Hunds coupling, which produces an orbital selective Mott phase (OSMP) at intermediate values of the Hubbard U, as well as an orbitally ordered ferromagnetic insulating state at stronger coupling. An examination of the orbital and spin-correlation functions indicates that the orbital ordering occurs before the onset of magnetic correlations in this parameter regime as a function of temperature. In the OSMP, we find that the self-energy for the itinerant electrons is momentum dependent, indicating a degree of non-local correlations while the localized electrons have largely momentum independent self-energies. These non-local correlations also produce relative shifts of the hole-like and electron-like bands within our model. The overall momentum dependence of these quantities is strongly suppressed in the orbitally-ordered insulating phase.
