Recently the new model for the generation of strong large scale magnetic fields in neutron stars, driven by the parity violating interaction, was proposed. In this model, the magnetic field instability results from the modification of the chiral magnetic effect in presence of the electroweak interaction between ultrarelativistic electrons and nucleons. In the present work we study how a nonzero mass of charged particles, which are degenerate relativistic electrons and nonrelativistic protons, influences the generation of the magnetic field in frames of this approach. For this purpose we calculate the induced electric current of these charged particles, electroweakly interacting with background neutrons and an external magnetic field, exactly accounting for the particle mass. This current is calculated by two methods: using the exact solution of the Dirac equation for a charged particle in external fields and computing the polarization operator of a photon in matter composed of background neutrons. We show that the induced current is vanishing in both approaches leading to the zero contribution of massive particles to the generated magnetic field. We discuss the implication of our results for the problem of the magnetic field generation in compact stars.

We study the generation of strong large scale magnetic fields in dense quark matter. The magnetic field growth is owing to the magnetic field instability driven by the electroweak interaction of quarks. We discuss the situation when the chiral symmetry is unbroken in the degenerate quark matter. In this case we predict the amplification of the seed magnetic field $10^{12},text{G}$ to the strengths $(10^{14}-10^{15}),text{G}$. In our analysis we use the typical parameters of the quark matter in the core of a hybrid star or in a quark star. We also discuss the application of the obtained results to describe the magnetic fields generation in magnetars.
We estimate the chirality of the cosmological medium due to parity violating decays of standard model particles, focusing on the example of tau leptons. The non-trivial chirality is however too small to make a significant contribution to the cosmological magnetic field via the chiral-magnetic effect.
The measurement of sparticle masses in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at the LHC is analysed, in the scenario where the lightest neutralino decays into three quarks. Such decays, occurring through the baryon-number violating coupling lambda_ijk, pose a severe challenge to the capability of the LHC detectors since the final state has no missing energy signature and a high jet multiplicity. We focus on the case of non-zero lambda_212 which is the most difficult experimentally. The proposed method is valid over a wide range of SUGRA parameter space with lambda_212 between 10^{-5}-0.1. Simulations are performed of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Using the lightest neutralino from the decay chain left-squark to quark + next-to-lightest neutralino to right-slepton + lepton + quark and finally to lightest neutralino + lepton pair + quark, we show that the lightest and next-to-lightest neutralino masses can be measured by 3-jet and 3-jet + lepton pair invariant mass combinations. At the SUGRA point M_0=100 GeV, M_{1/2}=300 GeV, A_0=300 GeV, tan beta=10, sign of mu positive and with lambda_212=0.005, we achieve statistical (systematic) errors of 3 (3), 3 (3), 0.3 (4) and 5 (12) GeV respectively for the masses of the lightest neutralino, next-to-lightest neutralino, right-slepton and left-squark, with an integrated luminosity of 30 fb^{-1}.
A number of studies have considered how the rate of magnetic reconnection scales in large and weakly collisional systems by the modelling of long reconnecting current sheets. However, this set-up neglects both the formation of the current sheet and the coupling between the diffusion region and a larger system that supplies the magnetic flux. Recent studies of magnetic island merging, which naturally include these features, have found that ion kinetic physics is crucial to describe the reconnection rate and global evolution of such systems. In this paper, the effect of a guide field on reconnection during island merging is considered. In contrast to the earlier current sheet studies, we identify a limited range of guide fields for which the reconnection rate, outflow velocity, and pile-up magnetic field increase in magnitude as the guide field increases. The Hall-MHD fluid model is found to reproduce kinetic reconnection rates only for a sufficiently strong guide field, for which ion inertia breaks the frozen-in condition and the outflow becomes Alfvenic in the kinetic system. The merging of large islands occurs on a longer timescale in the zero guide field limit, which may in part be due to a mirror-like instability that occurs upstream of the reconnection region.
Axion, a hypothetical particle that is crucial to quantum chromodynamics and dark matter theory, has not yet been found in any experiment. With the improvement of laser technique, much stronger quasi-static electric and magnetic fields can be created in laboratory using laser-plasma interaction. In this article, we discuss the feasibility of axion or axionlike-particles exploring experiments using planar and cylindrically symmetric laser-plasma fields as backgrounds while probing with an ultrafast superstrong optical laser or x-ray free-electron laser with high photon number. Compared to classical magnet design, the axion source in laser-plasma interaction trades the accumulating length for the sources interacting strength. Besides, a structured field in the plasma creates a tunable transverse profile of the interaction and improves the signal-noise ratio via the mechanisms such as phase-matching. The mass of axion discussed in this article ranges from 1 textmu eV to 1 eV. Some simple schemes and estimations of axion production and probes polarization rotation are given, which reveals the possibility of future laser-plasma axion source in laboratory.
