We report on the detection of excess hard X-ray emission from the TeV BL Lac object Mrk421 during the historical low-flux state of the source in January 2013. NuSTAR observations were conducted four times between MJD56294 and MJD56312 with a total exposure of 80.9 ksec. The source flux in the 3-40 keV range was nearly constant except for MJD56307, when the average flux level increased by a factor of three. Throughout the exposure, the X-ray spectra of Mrk421 were well represented by a steep power-law model with a photon index of 3.1, although a significant excess was noted above 20 keV in the MJD56302 data when the source was in its faintest state. Moreover, Mrk421 was detected at more than the 4-sigma level in the 40-79 keV count maps for both MJD56307 and MJD56302 but not during the remaining two observations. The detected excess hard X-ray emissions connect smoothly with the extrapolation of the high-energy gamma-ray continuum of the blazar constrained by Fermi-LAT during the source quiescence. These findings indicate that, while the overall X-ray spectrum of Mrk421 is dominated by the highest-energy tail of the synchrotron continuum, the variable excess hard X-ray emission above 20 keV (on the timescale of a week) is related to the inverse Compton emission component. We discuss the resulting constraints on the variability and spectral properties of the low-energy segment of the electron energy distribution in the source.

Context: The nearby (z=0.031) TeV blazar Mrk421 was reported to be in a high state of flux activity since November, 2009. Aims: To investigate possible changes in the physical parameters of Mrk421 during its high state of activity using multiwavelength data. Methods: We have observed this source in bright state using High Altitude GAmma Ray (HAGAR) telescope array at energies above 250 GeV during February 13 - 19, 2010. Optical, X-ray and gamma-ray archival data are also used to obtain the SEDs and light curves. Results: Mrk421 was found to undergo one of its brightest flaring episodes on February 17, 2010 by various observations in X-rays and gamma-rays. HAGAR observations during February 13 - 19, 2010 at the energies above 250 GeV show an enhancement in the flux level, with a maximum flux of ~ 7 Crab units being detected on February 17, 2010. We present the spectral energy distributions during this flaring episode and investigate the correlation of the variability in X-ray and gamma-ray bands. Conclusions: Our multiwavelength study suggests that the flare detected during February 16 and 17, 2010 could arise due to a passing shock in the jet.
The radiation mechanism of very high energy $gamma$-ray emission from blazars and crucial parameters like magnetic field, and size of the emitting region are not well understood yet. To understand the above mentioned properties of blazars, we observed five nearby TeV $gamma$-ray emitting blazars (Mrk421, Mrk501, 1ES2344+514, 1ES1218+304 and 3C454.3) and one radio galaxy (M87) using the High Altitude GAmma Ray (HAGAR) telescope. HAGAR is an array of seven telescopes located at Hanle, India to detect Cherenkov light caused by extensive air showers initiated by $gamma$-rays. Mrk421 was observed to undergo one of its brightest flaring episodes on 2010 February 17, and detected by various experiments in X-rays and $gamma$- rays. HAGAR observations of this source during 2010 February 13 - 19, in the energies above 250 GeV show an enhancement in the flux level, with a flux of 6-7 Crab units being detected on 2010 February 17. We present the spectral energy distribution of the source during this flaring episode. In addition to this, the analysis procedure to extract $gamma$-ray signal from HAGAR data is discussed and preliminary results on all the AGNs are presented.
We present here our results on the hour like time scale X-ray flux variations in a sample of active galactic nuclei using data from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). We find that in the 3-79 keV band, BL Lacs are more variable than flat spectrum radio quasars and Seyfert galaxies. Among Seyferts, Seyfert 2s are more variable than Seyfert 1s. Also, radio-loud quasars are more variable in the hard (10-79 keV) band than the soft (3-10 keV) band while, Seyfert galaxies tend to show more variations in the soft band relative to the hard band.
Blazars are the most extreme subclass of active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets emerging from a super-massive black hole and forming a small angle with respect to our line of sight. Blazars are also known to be related to flaring activity as they exhibit large flux variations over a wide range of frequency and on multiple timescales, ranging from a few minutes to several months. The detection of a high-energy neutrino from the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056 and the subsequent discovery of a neutrino excess from the same direction have naturally strengthened the hypothesis that blazars are cosmic neutrino sources. While neutrino production during gamma-ray flares has been widely discussed, the neutrino yield of X-ray flares has received less attention. Motivated by a theoretical scenario where high energy neutrinos are produced by energetic protons interacting with their own X-ray synchrotron radiation, we make neutrino predictions over a sample of a sample of X-ray blazars. This sample consists of all blazars observed with the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on board Swift more than 50 times from November 2004 to November 2020. The statistical identification of a flaring state is done using the Bayesian Block algorithm to the 1 keV XRT light curves of frequently observed blazars. We categorize flaring states into classes based on their variation from the time-average value of the data points. During each flaring state, we compute the expected muon plus anti-muon neutrino events as well as the total signal for each source using the point-source effective area of Icecube for different operational seasons. We find that the median of the total neutrino number (in logarithm) from flares with duration $<30$ d is $mathcal{N}^{(rm tot)}_{ u_{mu}+bar{ u}_{mu}} sim 0.02$.
Accretion conditions and morphologies of X-ray transients containing neutron stars are still poorly understood. Circinus X-1 is an enigmatic case where we observe X-ray flux changes covering four orders of magnitude. We observed Circinus X-1 several times at its very lowest X-ray flux using the high energy transmission grating spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. At a flux of 1.8$times10^{-11}$ ergcm we observed a single 1.6 keV blackbody spectrum. The observed continuum luminosity of 10$^{35}$ ergsec is about two orders of magnitude too low to explain the observed photoionized luminosity suggesting a much more complex structure of the X-ray source which is partially or entirely obscured as had been previously suggested. This affects most emissions from the accretion disk including previously observed accretion disk coronal line emissions. Instead, the strongest observed photoionized lines are blueshifted by about $sim 400$ kms and we suggest that they originate in the ionized wind of a B5Ia supergaint companion supporting a previous identification. The neutron star in Cir X-1 is very young and should have a high magnetic field. At the observed luminosity the emission radius of the blackbody is small enough to be associated with the accretion hot spot as the X-ray emitting region. The small emission radius then points to a field strength below $10^{12}$ G which would be consistent with the observation of occasional type I X-ray bursts at high magnetic fields. We discuss Cir X-1 in the context of being a high-mass X-ray binary with some emphasis on a possible Be-star X-ray binary nature.
