We study differential operators on complete Riemannian manifolds which act on sections of a bundle of finite type modules over a von Neumann algebra with a trace. We prove a relative index and a Callias-type index theorems for von Neumann indexes of such operators. We apply these results to obtain a version of Atiyahs $L^2$-index theorem, which states that the index of a Callias-type operator on a non-compact manifold $M$ is equal to the $Gamma$-index of its lift to a Galois cover of $M$. We also prove the cobordism invariance of the index of Callias-type operators. In particular, we give a new proof of the cobordism invariance of the von Neumann index of operators on compact manifolds.

Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ denote by $S(M)$ and $LS(M)$ respectively the algebras of all measurable and locally measurable operators affiliated with $M.$ For a faithful normal semi-finite trace $tau$ on $M$ let $S(M, tau)$ (resp. $S_0(M, tau)$) be the algebra of all $tau$-measurable (resp. $tau$-compact) operators from $S(M).$ We give a complete description of all derivations on the above algebras of operators in the case of type I von Neumann algebra $M.$ In particular, we prove that if $M$ is of type I$_infty$ then every derivation on $LS(M)$ (resp. $S(M)$ and $S(M,tau)$) is inner, and each derivation on $S_0(M, tau)$ is spatial and implemented by an element from $S(M, tau).$
We introduce a notion of cobordism of Callias-type operators over complete Riemannian manifolds and prove that the index is preserved by such a cobordism. As an application we prove a gluing formula for Callias-type index. In particular, a usual index of an elliptic operator on a compact manifold can be computed as a sum of indexes of Callias-type operators on two non-compact, but topologically simpler manifolds. As another application we give a new proof of the relative index theorem for Callias-type operators, which also leads to a new proof of the Callias index theorem.
Given a type I von Neumann algebra $M$ with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $tau,$ let $S_0(M, tau)$ be the algebra of all $tau$-compact operators affiliated with $M.$ We give a complete description of all derivations on the algebra $S_0(M, tau).$ In particular, we prove that if $M$ is of type I$_infty$ then every derivation on $S_0(M, tau)$ is spatial.
We study the learnability of a class of compact operators known as Schatten--von Neumann operators. These operators between infinite-dimensional function spaces play a central role in a variety of applications in learning theory and inverse problems. We address the question of sample complexity of learning Schatten-von Neumann operators and provide an upper bound on the number of measurements required for the empirical risk minimizer to generalize with arbitrary precision and probability, as a function of class parameter $p$. Our results give generalization guarantees for regression of infinite-dimensional signals from infinite-dimensional data. Next, we adapt the representer theorem of Abernethy emph{et al.} to show that empirical risk minimization over an a priori infinite-dimensional, non-compact set, can be converted to a convex finite dimensional optimization problem over a compact set. In summary, the class of $p$-Schatten--von Neumann operators is probably approximately correct (PAC)-learnable via a practical convex program for any $p < infty$.

We compute the index of a Callias-type operator with APS boundary condition on a manifold with compact boundary in terms of combination of indexes of induced operators on a compact hypersurface. Our result generalizes the classical Callias-type index theorem to manifolds with compact boundary.
