The substitution of gallium by aluminum, germanium, tin and indium in PuCoGa5, the actinide-based superconductor with the highest critical temperature, has been investigated. Only systems with 20% substitution by Al and Ge (i.e. PuCoGa4Al and PuCoGa4Ge) have been successfully synthesized by annealing arc-melted samples. X-ray powder diffraction refinements indicate an enhanced c/a ratio in these two compounds but the magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a large reduction of the critical temperature Tc compared to PuCoGa5. DFT+ED calculations indicate significant changes in the Fermi surface, probably related to the decrease of Tc, in these compounds. In addition, the isotopic effect of the atomic mass of gallium, using 69Ga and 71Ga isotopes, was also investigated without observable influence on the critical temperature of PuCoGa5.

We present a study on the impact of Mn$^{3+}$ substitution in the geometrically frustrated Ising garnet Ho$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ using bulk magnetic measurements and low temperature powder neutron diffraction. We find that the transition temperature, $T_N$ = 5.8 K, for Ho$_3$MnGa$_4$O$_{12}$ is raised by almost 20 when compared to Ho$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$. Powder neutron diffraction on Ho$_3$Mn$_x$Ga$_{5-x}$O$_{12}$ ($x$ = 0.5, 1) below $T_N$ shows the formation of a long range ordered ordered state with $mathbf{k}$ = (0,0,0). Ho$^{3+}$ spins are aligned antiferromagnetically along the six crystallographic axes with no resultant moment while the Mn$^{3+}$ spins are oriented along the body diagonals, such that there is a net moment along [111]. The magnetic structure can be visualised as ten-membered rings of corner-sharing triangles of Ho$^{3+}$ spins with the Mn$^{3+}$ spins ferromagnetically coupled to each individual Ho$^{3+}$ spin in the triangle. Substitution of Mn$^{3+}$ completely relieves the magnetic frustration with $f = theta_{CW}/T_N approx 1.1$ for Ho$_3$MnGa$_4$O$_{12}$.
We have investigated the effect of atomic substitutions in the FeSe system, which exhibits the simplest crystal structure among the iron-based superconductors. An enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed with the substitution of S or Te for Se; the Tc increased with S substitution by up to 20 %, and also increased with Te substitution up to 75 %. In contrast, Co or Ni substitutions for the Fe site significantly suppressed superconductivity. In this work we present a detailed description of the substitution technique employed to determine Tc in the FeSe system.
The temperature dependent measurements of the thermodynamic critical field and the specific heat for the pressure stabilized Ga-II phase of elemental Gallium are presented. The discussion of these and other Ga phases data in the context of elemental and binary phonon-mediated type-I superconductors allowed to establish simple scaling relations between BCS quantities such as $B_{rm c}(0)/T_{rm c}sqrt{gamma_{rm e}}$ and the specific heat jump at $T_{rm c}$ versus the coupling strength $2Delta/k_{rm B} T_{rm c}$ [$Delta$ and $B_{rm c}(0)$ are the zero-temperature values of the superconducting energy gap and the thermodynamic critical field, respectively, $T_{rm c}$ is the transition temperature, and $gamma_{rm e}$ is the electronic specific heat]. The scaling relations can be analytically expressed by taking into account strong-coupling corrections to BCS theory. Such correlations can naturally explain the linear relation between $B_{rm c}(0)$ and $T_{rm c}$, which holds for type-I superconducting materials.
Single crystals of the Ni-doped FeAs-based superconductor SrFe2-xNixAs2 were grown using a self-flux solution method and characterized via x-ray measurements and low temperature transport, magnetization, and specific heat studies. A doping phase diagram has been established where the antiferromagnetic order associated with the magnetostructural transition of the parent compound SrFe2As2 is gradually suppressed with increasing Ni concentration, giving way to bulk-phase superconductivity with a maximum transition temperature of 9.8 K. The superconducting phase exists through a finite range of Ni concentrations centered at x=0.15, with full diamagnetic screening observed over a narrow range of x coinciding with a sharpening of the superconducting transition and an absence of magnetic order. An enhancement of bulk superconducting transition temperatures of up to 20% was found to occur upon high-temperature annealing of samples.
A detailed study of the effect caused by the partial substitution of Ru by Ir on the magnetic and superconducting properties of the ruthenocuprate Ru(1-x)Ir(x)Sr2GdCu2o8; 0 <= x <= 0.10; is presented. The combined experimental results of structural, electrical, and magnetic measurements indicate that Ir substitutes Ru for x <= 0.10 with no significant structural distortions. Ir-doping gradually suppresses both the magnetic and the superconducting states. However, all samples were observed to attain the zero-resistance state at temperatures >= 2 K up to the highest applied magnetic field of 18 T. The resistive upper-critical field Hc2 as a function of temperature has been determined for these polycrystalline samples. Values of Hc2(0) were found to be ~ 52 T, and weakly dependent on the Ir concentration. We have also observed that the superconducting transition width decreases and the slope of the resistive transition increases with increasing Ir doping, a feature which is much more pronounced at high applied magnetic fields. The double-peak structure observed in the derivative of the resistive curves has been related to an inhomogeneous nature of the physical grains which is enhanced due to the Ru substitution by Ir. This indicates that the Josephson-junction-array (JJA) model seems to be appropriated to describe the superconducting state in these ruthenocuprates. The low temperature rho(T) data along with the determined vortex thermal activation energy are consistent with a 2D vortex dynamics in these materials.
