We report some nonsmooth dynamics of a Bloch state in a one-dimensional tight binding model with the periodic boundary condition. After a sudden change of the potential of an arbitrary site, quantities like the survival probability of the particle in the initial Bloch state show cusps periodically, with the period being the Heisenberg time associated with the energy spectrum. This phenomenon is a emph{nonperturbative} counterpart of the nonsmooth dynamics observed previously (Zhang and Haque, arXiv:1404.4280) in a periodically driven tight binding model. Underlying the cusps is an exactly solvable model, which consists of equally spaced levels extending from $-infty$ to $+infty $, between which two arbitrary levels are coupled to each other by the same strength.

We study the quench dynamics of non-Hermitian topological models with non-Hermitian skin effects. Adopting the non-Bloch band theory and projecting quench dynamics onto the generalized Brillouin zone, we find that emergent topological structures, in the form of dynamic skyrmions, exist in the generalized momentum-time domain, and are correlated with the non-Bloch topological invariants of the static Hamiltonians. The skyrmion structures anchor on the fixed points of dynamics whose existence are conditional on the coincidence of generalized Brillouin zones of the pre- and post-quench Hamiltonians. Global signatures of dynamic skyrmions, however, persist well beyond such a condition, thus offering a general dynamic detection scheme for non-Bloch topology in the presence of non-Hermitian skin effects. Applying our theory to an experimentally relevant, non-unitary quantum walk, we explicitly demonstrate how the non-Bloch topological invariants can be revealed through the non-Bloch quench dynamics.
There are a number of tasks in quantum information science that exploit non-transitional adiabatic dynamics. Such a dynamics is bounded by the adiabatic theorem, which naturally imposes a speed limit in the evolution of quantum systems. Here, we investigate an approach for quantum state engineering exploiting a shortcut to the adiabatic evolution, which is based on rapid quenches in a continuous-time Hamiltonian evolution. In particular, this procedure is able to provide state preparation faster than the adiabatic brachistochrone. Remarkably, the evolution time in this approach is shown to be ultimately limited by its thermodynamical cost, provided in terms of the average work rate (average power) of the quench process. We illustrate this result in a scenario that can be experimentally implemented in a nuclear magnetic resonance setup.
The notion of topological phases extended to dynamical systems stimulates extensive studies, of which the characterization of non-equilibrium topological invariants is a central issue and usually necessitates the information of quantum dynamics in both the time and spatial dimensions. Here we combine the recently developed concepts of the dynamical classification of topological phases and synthetic dimension, and propose to efficiently characterize photonic topological phases via holographic quench dynamics. A pseudo spin model is constructed with ring resonators in a synthetic lattice formed by frequencies of light, and the quench dynamics is induced by initializing a trivial state which evolves under a topological Hamiltonian. Our key prediction is that the complete topological information of the Hamiltonian is extracted from quench dynamics solely in the time domain, manifesting holographic features of the dynamics. In particular, two fundamental time scales emerge in the quench dynamics, with one mimicking the Bloch momenta of the topological band and the other characterizing the residue time evolution of the state after quench. For this a dynamical bulk-surface correspondence is obtained in time dimension and characterizes the topology of the spin model. This work also shows that the photonic synthetic frequency dimension provides an efficient and powerful way to explore the topological non-equilibrium dynamics.

This paper studies the quantum dynamics of a charged particle in a 2D square lattice, under the influence of electric and magnetic fields, the former being aligned with one of the lattice axes and the latter perpendicular to the lattice plane. While in free space these dynamics consist of uniform motions in the direction orthogonal to the electric field vector, we find that, in a lattice, this directed drift takes place only for specific initial conditions and for electric field magnitudes smaller than a critical value. Otherwise, the quantum wave--packet spreads ballistically in both directions orthogonal to the electric field. We quantify this ballistic spreading and identify the subspace of initial conditions insuring directed transport with the drift velocity. We also describe the effect of disorder in the system.
In this work we investigate the equilibration dynamics after a sudden Hamiltonian quench of a quantum spin system initially prepared in a thermal state. To characterize the equilibration we evaluate the Loschmidt echo, a global measure for the degree of distinguishability between the initial and time-evolved quenched states. We present general results valid for small quenches and detailed analysis of the quantum XY chain. The result is that quantum criticality manifests, even at small but finite temperatures, in a universal double-peaked form of the echo statistics and poor equilibration for sufficiently relevant perturbations. In addition, for this model we find a tight lower bound on the Loschmidt echo in terms of the purity of the initial state and the more-easily-evaluated Hilbert-Schmidt inner product between initial and time-evolved quenched states. This bound allows us to relate the time-averaged Loschmidt echo with the purity of the time-averaged state, a quantity that has been shown to provide an upper bound on the variance of observables.
