Chimera states are complex spatiotemporal patterns in networks of identical oscillators, characterized by the coexistence of synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. Here we propose to extend the phenomenon of chimera states to the quantum regime, and uncover intriguing quantum signatures of these states. We calculate the quantum fluctuations about semiclassical trajectories and demonstrate that chimera states in the quantum regime can be characterized by bosonic squeezing, weighted quantum correlations, and measures of mutual information. Our findings reveal the relation of chimera states to quantum information theory, and give promising directions for experimental realization of chimera states in quantum systems.

Classical chimera states are paradigmatic examples of partial synchronization patterns emerging in nonlinear dynamics. These states are characterized by the spatial coexistence of two dramatically different dynamical behaviors, i.e., synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. Our aim in this contribution is to discuss signatures of chimera states in quantum mechanics. We study a network with a ring topology consisting of N coupled quantum Van der Pol oscillators. We describe the emergence of chimera-like quantum correlations in the covariance matrix. Further, we establish the connection of chimera states to quantum information theory by describing the quantum mutual information for a bipartite state of the network.
We add quantum fluctuations to a classical Hamiltonian model with synchronized period doubling in the thermodynamic limit, replacing the $N$ classical interacting angular momenta with quantum spins of size $l$. The full permutation symmetry of the Hamiltonian allows a mapping to a bosonic model and the application of exact diagonalization for quite large system size. {In the thermodynamic limit $Ntoinfty$ the model is described by a system of Gross-Pitaevski equations whose classical-chaos properties closely mirror the finite-$N$ quantum chaos.} For $Ntoinfty$, and $l$ finite, Rabi oscillations mark the absence of persistent period doubling, which is recovered for $ltoinfty$ with Rabi-oscillation frequency tending exponentially to 0. For the chosen initial conditions, we can represent this model in terms of Pauli matrices and apply the discrete truncated Wigner approximation. For finite $l$ this approximation reproduces no Rabi oscillations but correctly predicts the absence of period doubling. Quantitative agreement is recovered in the classical $ltoinfty$ limit.
The non-integrable Dicke model and its integrable approximation, the Tavis-Cummings (TC) model, are studied as functions of both the coupling constant and the excitation energy. The present contribution extends the analysis presented in the previous paper by focusing on the statistical properties of the quantum fluctuations in the energy spectrum and their relation with the excited state quantum phase transitions (ESQPT). These properties are compared with the dynamics observed in the semi-classica
Bose-Einstein condensates with balanced gain and loss in a double-well potential have been shown to exhibit PT-symmetric states. As proposed by Kreibich et al [Phys. Rev. A 87, 051601(R) (2013)], in the mean-field limit the dynamical behaviour of this system, especially that of the PT-symmetric states, can be simulated by embedding it into a Hermitian four-well system with time-dependent parameters. In this paper we go beyond the mean-field approximation and investigate many-body effects in this system, which are in lowest order described by the single-particle density matrix. The conditions for PT symmetry in the single-particle density matrix cannot be completely fulfilled by using pure initial states. Here we show that it is mathematically possible to achieve exact PT symmetry in the four-well many-body system in the sense of the dynamical behaviour of the single-particle density matrix. In contrast to previous work, for this purpose, we use mixed initial states fulfilling certain constraints and use them to calculate the dynamics.
We investigate precursors of critical behavior in the quasienergy spectrum due to the dynamical instability in the kicked top. Using a semiclassical approach, we analytically obtain a logarithmic divergence in the density of states, which is analogous to a continuous excited state quantum phase transition in undriven systems. We propose a protocol to observe the cusp behavior of the magnetization close to the critical quasienergy.
