The relation of quarteting and clustering in atomic nuclei is discussed based on symmetry-considerations. This connection enables us to predict a complete high-energy cluster spectrum from the description of the low-energy quartet part. As an example the $^{28}$Si nucleus is considered, including its well-established ground-state region, the recently proposed superdeformed band, and the high-lying molecular resonances.
We review recent studies of the cluster structure of light nuclei within the framework of the algebraic cluster model (ACM) for nuclei composed of k alpha-particles and within the framework of the cluster shell model (CSM) for nuclei composed of k alpha-particles plus x additional nucleons. The calculations, based on symmetry considerations and thus for the most part given in analytic form, are compared with experiments in light cluster nuclei. The comparison shows evidence for Z_2, D_{3h} and T_d symmetry in the even-even nuclei 8Be (k=2), 12C (k=3) and 16O (k=4), respectively, and for the associated double groups Z_2 and D_{3h} in the odd nuclei 9Be, 9B (k=2, x=1) and 13C (k=3, x=1), respectively.
The possibility of the $^8$He and $^{9}$Li clusters in atomic nuclei is discussed. Until now most of the clusters in the conventional models have been limited to the closures of the three-dimensional harmonic oscillators, such as $^4$He, $^{16}$O, and $^{40}$Ca. In the neutron-rich nuclei, however, the neutron to proton ratio is not unity, and it is worthwhile to think about more neutron-rich objects with $N>Z$ as the building blocks of cluster structures. Here the nuclei with the neutron number six, which is the subclosure of the $p_{3/2}$ subshell of the $jj$-coupling shell model, are assumed to be clusters, and thus we study the $^8$He and $^9$Li cluster structures in $^{16}$Be ($^8$He+$^8$He), $^{17}$B ($^8$He+$^9$Li), $^{18}$C ($^9$Li+$^9$Li), and $^{24}$C ($^8$He+$^8$He+$^8$He). Recent progress of the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM) enables us to utilize $jj$-coupling shell model wave functions as the clusters rather easily. It is shown that the $^8$He+$^9$Li and $^9$Li+$^9$Li cluster configurations cover the lowest shell-model states of $^{17}$B and $^{18}$C, respectively. To predict the cluster states with large relative distances, we increase the expectation value of the principal quantum numbers by adding the nodes to the lowest states under the condition that the total angular momentum is unchanged (equal to $J^pi =0$). As a result, developed cluster states are obtained around the corresponding threshold energies. The rotational band structure of $^{24}$C, which reflect the symmetry of equilateral triangular configuration ($D_{3h}$ symmetry) of three $^8$He clusters, also appears around the threshold energy.
We present evidence of the existence of a new supersymmetric quartet of nuclei in the A=190 mass region. The analysis is based on new experimental information on the odd-odd nucleus 194Ir from transfer and capture reactions. The new data allow the identification of a new supersymmetric quartet, consisting of the 192,193Os and 193,194Ir nuclei. We make explicit predictions fo r193Os, and suggest that its spectroscopic properties be measured in dedicated experiments. Finally, we study correlations between different transfer reactions.
We present evidence for a new supersymmetric quartet in the A=190 region of the nuclear mass table. New experimental information on transfer and neutron capture reactions to the odd-odd nucleaus 194 Ir strongly suggests the existence of a new supersymmetric quartet, consisting of the 192,193 Os and 193,194 Ir nuclei. We make explicit predictions for the odd-neutron nucleus 193 Os, and suggest that its spectroscopic properties be measured in dedicated experiments.
An effective field theory is used to describe light nuclei, calculated from quantum chromodynamics on a lattice at unphysically large pion masses. The theory is calibrated at leading order to two available data sets on two- and three-body nuclei for two pion masses. At those pion masses we predict the quartet and doublet neutron-deuteron scattering lengths, and the alpha-particle binding energy. For $m_pi=510~$MeV we obtain, respectively, $^4a_{rm nD}=2.3pm 1.3~$fm, $^2a_{rm nD}=2.2pm 2.1~$fm, and $B_{alpha}^{}=35pm 22~$MeV, while for $m_pi=805~$MeV $^4a_{rm nD}=1.6pm 1.3~$fm, $^2a_{rm nD}=0.62pm 1.0~$fm, and $B_{alpha}^{}=94pm 45~$MeV are found. Phillips- and Tjon-like correlations to the triton binding energy are established. Higher-order effects on the respective correlation bands are found insensitive to the pion mass. As a benchmark, we present results for the physical pion mass, using experimental two-body scattering lengths and the triton binding energy as input. Hints of subtle changes in the structure of the triton and alpha particle are discussed.
