The recent demonstration of saturable absorption and negative optical conductivity in the Terahertz range in graphene has opened up new opportunities for optoelectronic applications based on this and other low dimensional materials. Recently, population inversion across the Dirac point has been observed directly by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES), revealing a relaxation time of only ~ 130 femtoseconds. This severely limits the applicability of single layer graphene to, for example, Terahertz light amplification. Here we use tr-ARPES to demonstrate long-lived population inversion in bilayer graphene. The effect is attributed to the small band gap found in this compound. We propose a microscopic model for these observations and speculate that an enhancement of both the pump photon energy and the pump fluence may further increase this lifetime.

In this study, we first show that the argon flow during epitaxial graphene growth is an important parameter to control the quality of the buffer and the graphene layer. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements reveal that the decomposition of the SiC substrate strongly depends on the Ar mass flow rate while pressure and temperature are kept constant. Our data are interpreted by a model based on the competition of the SiC decomposition rate, controlled by the Ar flow, with a uniform graphene buffer layer formation under the equilibrium process at the SiC surface. The proper choice of a set of growth parameters allows the growth of defect-free, ultra-smooth and coherent graphene-free buffer layer and bilayer-free monolayer graphene sheets which can be transformed into large-area high-quality quasi-freestanding monolayer and bilayer graphene (QFMLG and QFBLG) by hydrogen intercalation. AFM, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), Raman spectroscopy and electronic transport measurements underline the excellent homogeneity of the resulting quasi-freestanding layers. Electronic transport measurements in four-point probe configuration reveal a homogeneous low resistance anisotropy on both {mu}m- and mm scales.
We develop two types of graphene devices based on nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), that allows transport measurement in the presence of in situ strain modulation. Different mobility and conductance responses to strain were observed for single layer and bilayer samples. These types of devices can be extended to other 2D membranes such as MoS2, providing transport, optical or other measurements with in situ strain.

We present the results of the experimental investigation of the low - frequency noise in bilayer graphene transistors. The back - gated devices were fabricated using the electron beam lithography and evaporation. The charge neutrality point for the fabricated transistors was around 10 V. The noise spectra at frequencies above 10 - 100 Hz were of the 1/f - type with the spectral density on the order of 10E-23 - 10E-22 A2/Hz at the frequency of 1 kHz. The deviation from the 1/f spectrum at the frequencies below 10 -100 Hz indicates that the noise is of the carrier - number fluctuation origin due to the carrier trapping by defects. The Hooge parameter of 10E-4 was extracted for this type of devices. The gate dependence of the noise spectral density suggests that the noise is dominated by the contributions from the ungated part of the device channel and by the contacts. The obtained results are important for graphene electronic applications.
Monolayer graphene placed with a twist on top of AB-stacked bilayer graphene hosts topological flat bands in a wide range of twist angles. The dispersion of these bands and gaps between them can be efficiently controlled by a perpendicular electric field, which induces topological transitions accompanied by changes of the Chern numbers. In the regime where the applied electric field induces gaps between the flat bands, we find a relatively uniform distribution of the Berry curvature. Consequently, interaction-induced valley- and/or spin-polarized states at integer filling factors are energetically favorable. In particular, we predict a quantum anomalous Hall state at filling factor $ u=1$ for a range of twist angles $1^circ<theta <1.4^circ$. Furthermore, to characterize the response of the system to magnetic field, we computed the Hofstadter butterfly and the Wannier plot, which can be used to probe the dispersion and topology of the flat bands in this material.
Anisotropic materials, with orientation-dependent properties, have attracted more and more attention due to their compelling tunable and flexible performance in electronic and optomechanical devices. So far, two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus shows the largest known anisotropic behavior, which is highly desired for synaptic and neuromorphic devices, multifunctional directional memories, and even polarization-sensitive photodetector, whereas it is unstable at ambient conditions. Recently, 2D few-layered As2S3 with superior chemical stability was successfully exfoliated in experiments. However, the electronic and mechanical properties of monolayer and bilayer As2S3 is still lacking. Here, we report the large anisotropic electronic and mechanical properties of As2S3 systems through first-principles calculations and general angle-dependent Hookes law. Monolayer and bilayer As2S3 exhibit anisotropic factors of Youngs modulus of 3.15 and 3.32, respectively, which are larger than the black phosphorous with experimentally confirmed and an anisotropic factor of 2. This study provides an effective route to flexible orientation-dependent nanoelectronics, nanomechanics, and offers implications in promoting related experimental investigations.
