We report the results of a 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation carried out to study the early-stage evolution of the shock formed when an unmagnetized relativistic jet interacts with an ambient electron-ion plasma. Full-shock structures associated with the interaction are observed in the ambient frame. When open boundaries are employed in the direction of the jet; the forward shock is seen as a hybrid structure consisting of an electrostatic shock combined with a double layer, while the reverse shock is seen as a double layer. The ambient ions show two distinct features across the forward shock: a population penetrating into the shocked region from the precursor region and an accelerated population escaping from the shocked region into the precursor region. This behavior is a signature of a combination of an electrostatic shock and a double layer. Jet electrons are seen to be electrostatically trapped between the forward and reverse shock structures showing a ring-like distribution in a phase-space plot, while ambient electrons are thermalized and become essentially isotropic in the shocked region. The magnetic energy density grows to a few percent of the jet kinetic energy density at both the forward and the reverse shock transition layers in a rather short time scale. We see little disturbance of the jet ions over this time scale.

The properties of relativistic jets, their interaction with the ambient environment, and particle acceleration due to kinetic instabilities are studied self-consistently with Particle-in-Cell simulations. An important key issue is how a toroidal magnetic field affects the evolution of an e$^{pm}$ and an e$^{-}$ - p$^{+}$ jet, how kinetic instabilities such as the Weibel instability (WI), the mushroom instability (MI) and the kinetic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (kKHI) are excited, and how such instabilities contribute to particle acceleration. We show that WI, MI and kKHI excited at the linear stage, generate a quasi-steady $x$-component of electric field which accelerates and decelerates electrons. In this work, we use a new jet injection scheme where an electric current is self-consistently generated at the jet orifice by the jet particles. We inject both e$^{pm}$ and e$^{-}$ - p$^{+}$ jets with a toroidal magnetic field (with a top-hat jet density profile) and for a sufficiently long time in order to examine the non-linear effects of the jet evolution. Despite the weakness of the initial magnetic field, we observe significant differences in the structure of the strong electromagnetic fields that are driven by the kinetic instabilities. We find that different jet compositions present different strongly excited instability modes. The magnetic field in the non-linear stage generated by different instabilities becomes dissipated and reorganized into a new topology. The 3-dimensional magnetic field topology indicates possible reconnection sites and the accelerated particles are significantly accelerated in the non-linear stage by the dissipation of the magnetic field and/or reconnection. This study will shed further light on the nature of astrophysical relativistic magnetized jet phenomena.

Pulsars out of their parent SNR directly interact with the ISM producing so called Bow-Shock Pulsar Wind Nebulae, the relativistic equivalents of the heliosphere/heliotail system. These have been directly observed from Radio to X-ray, and are found also associated to TeV halos, with a large variety of morphologies. They offer a unique environment where the pulsar wind can be studied by modelling its interaction with the surrounding ambient medium, in a fashion that is different/complementary from the canonical Plerions. These systems have also been suggested as the possible origin of the positron excess detected by AMS and PAMELA, in contrast to dark matter. I will present results from 3D Relativistic MHD simulations of such nebulae. On top of these simulations we computed the expected emission signatures, the properties of high energy particle escape, the role of current sheets in channeling cosmic rays, the level of turbulence and magnetic amplification, and how they depend on the wind structure and magnetisation.

The generation of turbulence at magnetized shocks and its subsequent interaction with the latter is a key question of plasma- and high-energy astrophysics. This paper presents two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a fast shock front interacting with incoming upstream perturbations, described as harmonic entropy or fast magnetosonic waves, both in the relativistic and the sub-relativistic regimes. We discuss how the disturbances are transmitted into downstream turbulence and we compare the observed response for small amplitude waves to a recent linear calculation. In particular, we demonstrate the existence of a resonant response of the corrugation amplitude when the group velocity of the outgoing downstream fast mode matches the velocity of the shock front. We also present simulations of large amplitude waves to probe the non-linear regime.
Mildly relativistic shocks in magnetized electron-ion plasmas are investigated with 2D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of unprecedentedly high resolution and large scale for conditions that may be found at internal shocks in blazar cores. Ion-scale effects cause corrugations along the shock surface whose properties somewhat depend on the configuration of the mean perpendicular magnetic field, that is either in or out of the simulation plane. We show that the synchrotron maser instability persists to operate in mildly relativistic shocks in agreement with theoretical predictions and produces coherent emission of upstream-propagating electromagnetic waves. Shock front ripples are excited in both mean-field configurations and they engender effective wave amplification. The interaction of these waves with upstream plasma generates electrostatic wakefields.

Recent in-situ and remote observations suggest that the transport regime associated with shock accelerated particles may be anomalous {i.e., the Mean Square Displacement (MSD) of such particles scales non-linearly with time}. We use self-consistent, hybrid PIC plasma simulations to simulate a quasi-parallel shock with parameters compatible with heliospheric shocks, and gain insights about the particle transport in such a system. For suprathermal particles interacting with the shock we compute the MSD separately in the upstream and downstream regions. Tracking suprathermal particles for sufficiently long times up and/or downstream of the shock poses problems in particle plasma simulations, such as statistically poor particle ensembles and trajectory fragments of variable length in time. Therefore, we introduce the use of time-averaged mean square displacement (TAMSD), which is based on single particle trajectories, as an additional technique to address the transport regime for the upstream and downstream regions. MSD and TAMSD are in agreement for the upstream energetic particle population, and both give a strong indication of superdiffusive transport, consistent with interplanetary shock observations. MSD and TAMSD are also in reasonable agreement downstream, where indications of anomalous transport are also found. TAMSD shows evidence of heterogeneity in the diffusion properties of the downstream particle population, ranging from subdiffusive behaviour of particles trapped in the strong magnetic field fluctuations generated at the shock, to superdiffusive behaviour of particles transmitted and moving away from the shock.
