Semi-regular variables (SRVs) though closely related to Mira variables, are a less studied class of AGB stars. While asymmetry in the brightness distribution of many Mira variables is fairly well known, it is detected only in a few SRVs. Asymmetry in the brightness distribution at the level of a few milliarcsecond (mas) can be detected by high angular resolution techniques like lunar occultations (LO), long baseline interferometry, and aperture masking interferometry. Multi-epoch LO observations have the potential to detect a departure of brightness profile from spherical symmetry. Each LO event provides a uniform disk (UD) angular diameter along the position angle of the occultation. Any significant difference in the UD angular diameter values of multi-epoch LO observations signifies a brightness asymmetry. In this paper, we report for the first time three epoch UD angular diameter values of a SRV UZ Arietis using the LO technique at 2.2 $mu m$. Optical linear polarization of the source observed by us recently is also reported. The asymmetric brightness distribution of UZ Ari suggested by a small difference in the fitted UD values for the three epochs, is discussed in the context of optical polarization exhibited by the source and the direction of polarization axis in the plane of the sky.

The semi-regular variable star RU Vulpeculae (RU Vul) is being observed visually since 1935. Its pulsation period and amplitude are declining since $sim1954$. A leading hypothesis to explain the period decrease in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars such as RU Vul is an ongoing flash of the He-burning shell, also called a thermal pulse (TP), inside the star. In this paper, we present a CCD photometric light curve of RU Vul, derive its fundamental parameters, and test if the TP hypothesis can describe the observed period decline. We use CCD photometry to determine the present-day pulsation period and amplitude in three photometric bands, and high-resolution optical spectroscopy to derive the fundamental parameters. The period evolution of RU Vul is compared to predictions by evolutionary models of the AGB phase. We find that RU Vul is a metal-poor star with a metallicity $[{rm M}/{rm H}]=-1.59pm0.05$ and an effective surface temperature of $T_{rm eff}=3634pm20$ K. The low metallicity of RU Vul and its kinematics indicate that it is an old, low-mass member of the thick disc or the halo population. The present day pulsation period determined from our photometry is $sim108$ d, the semi-amplitude in the V-band is $0.39pm0.03$ mag. The observed period decline is found to be well matched by an evolutionary AGB model with stellar parameters comparable to those of RU Vul. We conclude that the TP hypothesis is in good agreement with the observed period evolution of RU Vul.

Variability on all time scales between seconds and decades is typical for cataclysmic variables (CVs). One of the brightest and best studied CVs is TT Ari, a nova-like variable which belongs to the VY Scl subclass, characterized by occasional low states in their light curves. It is also known as a permanent superhumper at high state, revealing positive (P_S > P_0) as well as negative (P_S < P_0) superhumps, where P_S is the period of the superhump and P_0 the orbital period. TT Ari was observed by the Canadian space telescope MOST for about 230 hours nearly continuously in 2007, with a time resolution of 48 seconds. Here we analyze these data, obtaining a dominant negative superhump signal with a period P_S = 0.1331 days and a mean amplitude of 0.09 mag. Strong flickering with amplitudes up to 0.2 mag and peak-to-peak time scales of 15-20 minutes is superimposed on the periodic variations. We found no indications for significant quasi-periodic oscillations with periods around 15 minutes, reported by other authors. We discuss the known superhump behaviour of TT Ari during the last five decades and conclude that our period value is at the upper limit of all hitherto determined negative superhump periods of TT Ari, before and after the MOST run.
Semi-regular variables (SRVs) are similar to Miras in brightness, and they also follow PLRs, though not necessarily the same as Miras. As potential standard candles they are more challenging than Miras due to their smaller variability amplitudes and less regular light curves, but they are substantially more numerous and especially promising to probe old stellar populations. We aim to characterize the variability of SRVs, with focus on their connection with Miras, in order to prepare the ground for investigating their potential as distance indicators. We examine SRVs and Miras in the Magellanic Clouds from OGLE-III observations, with data from Gaia and 2MASS. After cleaning the sample from variability periods unrelated to pulsation, we classify each source by chemical type and combination of pulsation modes. We examine the results in terms of global photometric and pulsation properties. We identify four SRVs groups that fit the general evolutionary scenario predicted by theory. SRVs dominated by fundamental-mode pulsation are very similar to Miras, especially if mono-periodic. They further split into two sub-groups, one of which follows the same sequence as Miras in the period-luminosity and period-amplitude diagram, without discontinuity. The similarities between Miras and SRVs suggest that the latter can be adopted as complementary distance indicators to the former, thereby at least doubling the available number of LPVs suitable for use as distance indicators. The traditional amplitude-based separation between Miras and SRVs is not necessarily appropriate, and a more physically sound criterion should also involve pulsation periods. While this would require comparatively longer time series, they are expected to become accessible in the coming years even for weak sources thanks to current and future large-scale surveys. The table of reclassified LPVs is made public.
Multiple algorithms of time series analysis are briefly reviewed and partially illustrated by application to the visual observations of the semi-regular variable DY Per from the AFOEV database. These algorithms were implemented in the software MCV (Andronov and Baklanov, 2004), MAVKA (Andrych and Andronov, 2019; Andrych et al., 2019). Contrary to the methods of physical modeling, which need to use too many parameters, many of which may not be determined from pure photometry (like temperature/spectral class, radial velocities, mass ratio), phenomenological algorithms use smaller number of parameters. Beyond the classical algebraic polynomials, in the software MAVKA are implemented other algorithms, totally 21 approximations from 11 classes. Photometric observations of DY Per from the AFOEV international database were analyzed. The photometric period has switched from P=851.1d(4.1) to P=780.5d(2.7) after JD 2454187(9)d. A parameter of sinusoidality is introduced, which is equal to the ratio of effective semi-amplitudes of the signal determined from a sine fit and the running parabola scalegram.
The presence of electric currents in the atmospheres of magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars could bring important theoretical constrains about the nature and evolution of magnetic field in these stars. The Lorentz force, which results from the interaction between the magnetic field and the induced currents, modifies the atmospheric structure and induces characteristic rotational variability of pressure-sensitive spectroscopic features, that can be analysed using phase-resolved spectroscopic observations. In this work we continue the presentation of results of the magnetic pressure studies in mCP stars focusing on the high-resolution spectroscopic observations of Bp star 56Ari. We have detected a significant variability of the Halpha, Hbeta, and Hgamma spectral lines during full rotation cycle of the star. Then these observations are interpreted in the framework of the model atmosphere analysis, which accounts for the Lorentz force effects. We used the LLmodels stellar model atmosphere code for the calculation of the magnetic pressure effects in the atmosphere of 56Ari taking into account realistic chemistry of the star and accurate computations of the microscopic plasma properties. The Synth3 code was employed to simulate phase-resolved variability of Balmer lines. We demonstrate that the model with the outward-directed Lorentz force in the dipole+quadrupole configuration is likely to reproduce the observed hydrogen lines variation. These results present strong evidences for the presence of non-zero global electric currents in the atmosphere of this early-type magnetic star.
