We report comprehensive Raman and infrared investigations of charge-order (CO) fluctuations in the organic metal $beta^{primeprime}$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$SF$_5$CHFSO$_3$ and superconductor $beta^{primeprime}$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$SF$_5$CH$_2$CF$_2$SO$_3$. The charge-sensitive vibrational bands have been analyzed through an extension of the well-known Kubo model for the spectral signatures of an equilibrium between two states. At room temperature, both salts exhibit charge fluctuations between two differently charged molecular states with an exchange frequency of about $6times10^{11} {rm s}^{-1}$. The exchange rate of the metallic salt remains roughly constant down to 10 K, while in the superconductor the exchange velocity starts to decrease below 200 K, and a frozen charge-ordered state emerges, and coexists with the charge-order fluctuation state down to the superconducting temperature. These findings are confronted with other existing spectroscopic experiments, and a tentative phase diagram is proposed for the $beta^{primeprime}$ BEDT-TTF quarter-filled salts.

We observe charge-order fluctuations in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $beta^{primeprime}$-(BEDT-TTF)2 SF5 CH2 CF2 SO3 both by means of vibrational spectroscopy, locally probing the fluctuating charge order, and investigating the in -plane dynamical response by infrared reflectance spectroscopy. The decrease of effective electronic interaction in an isostructural metal suppresses both charge-order fluctuations and superconductivity, pointing on their interplay. We compare the results of our experiments with calculations on the extended Hubbard model.
We study the properties of $s$-wave superconductivity induced around a nematic quantum critical point in two-dimensional metals. The strong Landau damping and the Cooper pairing between incoherent fermions have dramatic mutual influence on each other, and hence should be treated on an equal footing. This problem is addressed by analyzing the self-consistent Dyson-Schwinger equations for the superconducting gap and Landau damping rate. We solve the equations at zero temperature without making any linearization, and show that the superconducting gap is maximized at the quantum critical point and decreases rapidly as the system departs from this point. The interplay between nematic fluctuation and an additional pairing interaction, caused by phonon or other boson mode, is also investigated. The total superconducting gap generated by such interplay can be several times larger than the direct sum of the gaps separately induced by these two pairing interactions. This provides a promising way to achieve remarkable enhancement of superconductivity.
Superconductivity in low carrier density metals challenges the conventional electron-phonon theory due to the absence of retardation required to overcome Coulomb repulsion. In quantum critical polar metals, the Coulomb repulsion is heavily screened, while the critical transverse optic phonons decouple from the electron charge. In the resulting vacuum, the residual interactions between quasiparticles are carried by energy fluctuations of the polar medium, resembling the gravitational interactions of a dark matter universe. Here we demonstrate that pairing inevitably emerges from gravitational interactions with the energy fluctuations, leading to a dome-like dependence of the superconducting $T_c$ on carrier density. Our estimates show that this mechanism may explain the critical temperatures observed in doped SrTiO$_3$. We provide predictions for the enhancement of superconductivity near polar quantum criticality in two and three dimensional materials that can be used to test our theory.
Superconductivity in layered cuprates is induced by doping holes into a parent antiferromagnetic insulator. It is now recognized that another common emergent order involves charge stripes, and our understanding of the relationship been charge stripes and superconductivity has been evolving. Here we review studies of 214 cuprate families obtained by doping La$_2$CuO$_4$. Charge-stripe order tends to compete with bulk superconductivity; nevertheless, there is plentiful evidence that it coexists with two-dimensional superconductivity. This has been interpreted in terms of pair-density-wave superconductivity, and the perspective has shifted from competing to intertwined orders. In fact, a new picture of superconductivity based on pairing within charge stripes has been proposed, as we discuss.
After a brief introduction to crystalline organic superconductors and metals, we shall describe two recently-observed exotic phases that occur only in high magnetic fields. The first involves measurements of the non-linear electrical resistance of single crystals of the charge-density-wave (CDW) system (Per)$_2$Au(mnt)$_2$ in static magnetic fields of up to 45 T and temperatures as low as 25 mK. The presence of a fully gapped CDW state with typical CDW electrodynamics at fields higher that the Pauli paramagnetic limit of 34 T suggests the existence of a modulated CDW phase analogous to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state. Secondly, measurements of the Hall potential of single crystals of $alpha$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$, made using a variant of the Corbino geometry in quasistatic magnetic fields, show persistent current effects that are similar to those observed in conventional superconductors. The longevity of the currents, large Hall angle, flux quantization and confinement of the reactive component of the Hall potential to the edge of the sample are all consistent with the realization of a new state of matter in CDW systems with significant orbital quantization effects in strong magnetic fields.
