We study the relaxation mechanism of a highly excited carrier propagating in the antiferromagnetic background modeled by the $t$-$J$ Hamiltonian on a square lattice. We show that the relaxation consists of two distinct stages. The initial ultrafast stage with the relaxation time $tausim (hbar/t_0)(J/t_0)^{-2/3}$ (where $t_0$ is the hopping integral and $J$ is the exchange interaction) is based on generation of string states in the close proximity of the carrier. This unusual scaling of $tau$ is obtained by means of comparison of numerical results with a simplified $t$-$J_z$ model on a Bethe lattice. In the subsequent (much slower) stage local spin excitations are carried away by magnons. The relaxation time on the two-leg ladder system is an order of magnitude longer due to the lack of string excitations. This further reinforces the importance of string excitations for the ultrafast relaxation in the two-dimensional system.

In the exchange approximation, an exact solution is obtained for the sublattice magnetizations evolution in a two-sublattice ferrimagnet. Nonlinear regimes of spin dynamics are found that include both the longitudinal and precessional evolution of the sublattice magnetizations, with the account taken of the exchange relaxation. In particular, those regimes describe the spin switching observed in the GdFeCo alloy under the influence of a femtosecond laser pulse.
A central prospect of antiferromagnetic spintronics is to exploit magnetic properties that are unavailable with ferromagnets. However, this poses the challenge of accessing such properties for readout and control. To this end, light-induced manipulation of the transient ground state, e.g. by changing the magnetic anisotropy potential, opens promising pathways towards ultrafast deterministic control of antiferromagnetism. Here, we use this approach to trigger a $it{coherent}$ rotation of the entire long-range antiferromagnetic spin arrangement about a crystalline axis in $GdRh_2Si_2$ and demonstrate $it{deterministic}$ control of this rotation upon ultrafast optical excitation. Our observations can be explained by a displacive excitation of the Gd spins$$ local anisotropy potential by the optical excitation, allowing for a full description of this transient magnetic anisotropy potential.
We demonstrate a new approach for directly measuring the ultrafast energy transfer between elec- trons and magnons, enabling us to track spin dynamics in an antiferromagnet (AFM). In multiferroic HoMnO3, optical photoexcitation creates hot electrons, after which changes in the spin order are probed with a THz pulse tuned to a magnon resonance. This reveals a photoinduced transparency, which builds up over several picoseconds as the spins heat up due to energy transfer from hot elec- trons via phonons. This spin-lattice thermalization time is ?10 times faster than that of typical ferromagnetic (FM) manganites. We qualitatively explain the fundamental differences in spin-lattice thermalization between FM and AFM systems and apply a Boltzmann equation model for treating AFMs. Our work gives new insight into spin-lattice thermalization in AFMs and demonstrates a new approach for directly monitoring the ultrafast dynamics of spin order in these systems.
Strongly correlated systems exhibit intriguing properties caused by intertwined microscopic in- teractions that are hard to disentangle in equilibrium. Employing non-equilibrium time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the quasi-two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$, we identify a spectroscopic signature of double occupied sites (doublons) that are reflects fundamental Mott physics. Doublon-hole recombination is estimated to occur on time scales of one electronic hopping cycle $hbar/Japprox$ 14 fs. Despite strong electron-phonon coupling the dynamics can be explained by purely electronic effects captured by the single band Hubbard model, where thermalization is fast in the small-gap regime. Qualitative agreement with the experimental results however requires the assumption of an intrinsic hole-doping. The sensitivity of the doublon dynamics on the doping level provides a way to control ultrafast processes in such strongly correlated materials.

Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pump fluence to 3D at high pump fluence. This behavior arises from the metastable state created by photo-excitation, a state characterized by spin disordered metallic droplets within the larger charge- and spin-ordered insulating domains. Comparison with time-resolved resistivity measurements suggests that the collapse of spin ordering is correlated with the insulator-to-metal transition, but the recovery of the insulating phase does not depend on the re-establishment of the spin ordering.
