We report observation of magneto-electric and magneto-dielectric couplings in ceramic Co3TeO6. Temperature dependent DC magnetization and dielectric constant measurements together indicate coupling between magnetic order and electronic polarization. Strong anomaly in dielectric constant at ~ 18K in zero magnetic field indicates presence of spontaneous polarization. Observations like weak ferromagnetic order at lower temperature, field and temperature dependences of the ferroelectric transition provide experimental verification of the recent theoretical proposal by P. Toledano et al., Phys. Rev. B 85, 214439 (2012). We provide direct evidence of spin-phonon coupling as possible origin of magnetic order.

Synthesis and extensive structural, pyroelectric, magnetic, dielectric and magneto-electric characterizations are reported for polycrystalline Co4Nb2O9 towards unraveling the multiferroic state especially in reference to the magnetic spin flop transition. Magnetic measurements confirm the Co4Nb2O9 becomes antiferromagnetic (AFM) at around 28 K but no clear evidence for spin-flop effect was found. Associated with the magnetic phase transition, a sharp peak in pyroelectric current indicates the appearance of the strong magneto-electric coupling below Neel temperature (TN) with a large coupling constant upto 17.8 uC/m^2T. Using temperature oscillation technique, we establish Co4Nb2O9 to be a genuine multiferroic with spontaneous electric polarization in the anti-ferromagnetic state.
We investigate the electronic structure and the ferroelectric properties of the recently discovered multiferroic ScFeO$_3$ by means of ab-initio calculations. The $3d$ manifold of Fe in the half-filled configuration naturally favors an antiferromagnetic ordering, with a theoretical estimate of the antiferromagnetic Neel temperature in good agreement with the experimental values. We find that the inversion symmetry-breaking is driven by the off-centering of Sc atoms, which results in a large ferroelectric polarization of $sim$105,$mu$C/cm$^{2}$. Surprisingly the ferroelectric polarization is sensitive to the local magnetization of the Fe atoms resulting in a large negative magnetoelectric interaction. This behavior is unexpected in type-I multiferroic materials because the magnetic and ferroelectric orders are of different origins.
A two step solid state reaction route has been presented to synthesize monophasic cobalt tellurate (Co3TeO6, CTO) using Co3O4 and TeO2 as starting reagents. During synthesis, initial ingredient Co3O4 is found better than CoO in circumventing the intermediate Co5TeO8 or CoTeO3 phases. High resolution Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction has been used to probe different phases present in synthesized CTO and to achieve its single phase. Further, XANES studies near Co K and Te L-edge reveal mixed oxidation states of Co (i.e. Co2+ and Co3+) and +VI valence state of Te respectively, which is also confirmed with XPS. Charge imbalance due to different oxidation states of the Co-ions has been observed to be compensated by plausible Te-cations vacancy. Enhanced multiferroic properties like effective magnetic moment (JAP 116, (2014)) have been correlated with the present synthesis route.
Evidence of coexistence of Co3+ with Co2+ in ceramic Co3TeO6 through XANES, DC magnetization and first principal studies is provided. XANES along with linear combination fit provide relative concentrations of Co2+ and Co3+.Temperature dependent DC magnetization exhibits the same antiferromagnetic behavior as observed in single crystal. The presence of both Co2+ and Co3+ suggests that if the later is in high spin state, the effective magnetic moment is similar to that observed in single crystal studies. In contrast, if Co3+ is in low spin state effective magnetic moment is similar to that observed in Co3O4. It is further shown that both Co2+ and Co3+ in high spin states constitute a favorable ground state through first principle calculations where Rietveld refined Synchrotron X-ray diffraction data are inputs.
Our results describe an unprecedented example of change in the mechanism of magnetically-induced electric polarization from spin current to spin-dependent p-d hybridization model. We have followed the evolution of the magnetic structures of (ND4)2[FeCl5 D2O] compound using single crystal neutron diffraction under external magnetic field. The spin arrangements change from incommensurate cycloidal to commensurate distorted-cycloidal and finally to quasi-collinear. The determination of the magnetic structures allows us to explain the observed electric polarization in the different ferroelectric phases. Two different magneto-electric coupling mechanisms are at play: the spin-current mechanism for external magnetic field below 5 T, and the spin dependent p-d hybridization mechanism for magnetic field above this value, being this compound the first example reported presenting this sequence of magneto-electric coupling mechanisms.
