Modularity structures are common in various social and biological networks. However, its dynamical origin remains an open question. In this work, we set up a dynamical model describing the evolution of a social network. Based on the observations of real social networks, we introduced a link-creating/deleting strategy according to the local dynamics in the model. Thus the coevolution of dynamics and topology naturally determines the network properties. It is found that for a small coupling strength, the networked system cannot reach any synchronization and the network topology is homogeneous. Interestingly, when the coupling strength is large enough, the networked system spontaneously forms communities with different dynamical states. Meanwhile, the network topology becomes heterogeneous with modular structures. It is further shown that in a certain parameter regime, both the degree and the community size in the formed network follow a power-law distribution, and the networks are found to be assortative. These results are consistent with the characteristics of many empirical networks, and are helpful to understand the mechanism of formation of modularity in complex networks.
Online social media have greatly affected the way in which we communicate with each other. However, little is known about what are the fundamental mechanisms driving dynamical information flow in online social systems. Here, we introduce a generative model for online sharing behavior that is analytically tractable and which can reproduce several characteristics of empirical micro-blogging data on hashtag usage, such as (time-dependent) heavy-tailed distributions of meme popularity. The presented framework constitutes a null model for social spreading phenomena which, in contrast to purely empirical studies or simulation-based models, clearly distinguishes the roles of two distinct factors affecting meme popularity: the memory time of users and the connectivity structure of the social network.
In social tagging systems, the diversity of tag vocabulary and the popularity of such tags continue to increase as they are exposed to selection pressure derived from our cognitive nature and cultural preferences. This is analogous to living ecosystems, where mutation and selection play a dominant role. Such population dynamism, which yields a scaling law, is mathematically modeled by a simple stochastic process---the Yule--Simon process, which describes how new words are introduced to the system and then grow. However, in actual web services, we have observed that a large fluctuation emerges in the popularity growth of individual tags that cannot be explained by the ordinary selection mechanism. We introduce a scaling factor to quantify the degree of the deviation in the popularity growth from the mean-field solution of the Yule--Simon process, and we discuss possible triggers of such anomalous popularity behavior.

The creation and sharing of memes is a common modality of online social interactions. The goal of the present work is to better understand the collective dynamics of memes in this accelerating and competitive environment. By taking an ecological perspective and tracking the meme-text from 352 popular memes over the entirety of Reddit, we are able to show that the frequency of memes has scaled almost exactly with the total amount of content created over the past decade. This means that as more data is posted, an equal proportion of memes are posted. One consequence of limited human attention in the face of a growing number of memes is that the diversity of these memes has decreased at the community level, albeit slightly, in the same period. Another consequence is that the average lifespan of a meme has decreased dramatically, which is further evidence of an increase in competition and a decreasing collective attention span.
