We present an efficient general approach to first principles molecular dynamics simulations based on extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics in the limit of vanishing self-consistent field optimization. The reduction of the optimization requirement reduces the computational cost to a minimum, but without causing any significant loss of accuracy or longterm energy drift. The optimization-free first principles molecular dynamics requires only one single diagonalization per time step and yields trajectories at the same level of accuracy as exact, fully converged, Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations. The optimization-free limit of extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics therefore represents an ideal starting point for a robust and efficient formulation of a new generation first principles quantum mechanical molecular dynamics simulation schemes.

While the treatment of conical intersections in molecular dynamics generally requires nonadiabatic approaches, the Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation is still adopted as a valid alternative in certain circumstances. In the context of Mead-Truhlar minimal coupling, this paper presents a new closure of the nuclear Born-Oppenheimer equation, thereby leading to a molecular dynamics scheme capturing geometric phase effects. Specifically, a semiclassical closure of the nuclear Ehrenfest dynamics is obtained through a convenient prescription for the nuclear Bohmian trajectories. The conical intersections are suitably regularized in the resulting nuclear particle motion and the associated Lorentz force involves a smoothened Berry curvature identifying a loop-dependent geometric phase. In turn, this geometric phase rapidly reaches the usual topological index as the loop expands away from the original singularity. This feature reproduces the phenomenology appearing in recent exact nonadiabatic studies, as shown explicitly in the Jahn-Teller problem for linear vibronic coupling. Likewise, a newly proposed regularization of the diagonal correction term is also shown to reproduce quite faithfully the energy surface presented in recent nonadiabatic studies.
We present a first principles molecular dynamics approach that is based on time-reversible ex- tended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 123004 (2008)] in the limit of vanishing self-consistent field optimization. The optimization-free dynamics keeps the computational cost to a minimum and typically provides molecular trajectories that closely follow the exact Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface. Only one single diagonalization and Hamiltonian (or Fockian) costruction are required in each integration time step. The proposed dy- namics is derived for a general free-energy potential surface valid at finite electronic temperatures within hybrid density functional theory. Even in the event of irregular functional behavior that may cause a dynamical instability, the optimization-free limit represents an ideal starting guess for force calculations that may require a more elaborate iterative electronic ground state optimization. Our optimization-free dynamics thus represents a flexible theoretical framework for a broad and general class of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations.
We discuss the development and implementation of a constant temperature (NVT) molecular dynamics scheme that combines the Nose-Hoover chain thermostat with the extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) scheme, using a linear scaling density functional theory (DFT) approach. An integration scheme for this canonical-ensemble extended Lagrangian BOMD is developed and discussed in the context of the Liouville operator formulation. Linear scaling DFT canonical-ensemble extended Lagrangian BOMD simulations are tested on bulk silicon and silicon carbide systems to evaluate our integration scheme. The results show that the conserved quantity remains stable with no systematic drift even in the presence of the thermostat.
We show how vibronic spectra in molecular systems can be simulated in an efficient and accurate way using first principles approaches without relying on the explicit use of multiple Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces. We demonstrate and analyse the performance of mean field and beyond mean field dynamics techniques for the ch{H_2} molecule in one-dimension, in the later case capturing the vibronic structure quite accurately, including quantum Franck-Condon effects. In a practical application of this methodology we simulate the absorption spectrum of benzene in full dimensionality using time-dependent density functional theory at the multi-trajectory mean-field level, finding good qualitative agreement with experiment. These results show promise for future applications of this methodology in capturing phenomena associated with vibronic coupling in more complex molecular, and potentially condensed phase systems.
Fragmentation methods applied to multireference wave functions constitute a road towards the application of highly accurate ab initio wave function calculations to large molecules and solids. However, it is important for reproducibility and transferability that a fragmentation scheme be well-defined with minimal dependence on initial orbital guesses or user-designed ad hoc fragmentation schemes. One way to improve this sort of robustness is to ensure the energy obeys a variational principle; i.e., that the active orbitals and active space wave functions minimize the electronic energy in a certain ansatz for the molecular wave function. We extended the theory of the localized active space self-consistent field, LASSCF, method (JCTC 2019, 15, 972) to fully minimize the energy with respect to all orbital rotations, rendering it truly variational. The new method, called vLASSCF, substantially improves the robustness and reproducibility of the LAS wave function compared to LASSCF. We analyze the storage and operation cost scaling of vLASSCF compared to orbital optimization using a standard CASSCF approach and we show results of vLASSCF calculations on some simple test systems. We show that vLASSCF is energetically equivalent to CASSCF in the limit of one active subspace, and that vLASSCF significantly improves upon the reliability of LASSCF energy differences, allowing for more meaningful and subtle analysis of potential energy curves of dissociating molecules. We also show that all forms of LASSCF have a lower operation cost scaling than the orbital-optimization part of CASSCF.
