We proposed an action of neutral fermions interacting with external electromagnetic fields to construct a 3+1 dimensional topological field theory as the effective action attained by integrating out the fermionic fields in the related path integral. These neutral quasiparticles are assumed to emerge from the collective behavior of the original physical particles and holes (antiparticles). Although our construction is general it is particularly useful to formulate effective actions of the time reversal invariant topological insulators.

We revisit the chiral kinetic equation from high density effective theory approach, finding a chiral kinetic equation differs from counterpart derived from field theory in high order terms in the $O(1/mu)$ expansion, but in agreement with the equation derived in on-shell effective field theory upon identification of cutoff. By using reparametrization transformation properties of the effective theory, we show that the difference in kinetic equations from two approaches are in fact expected. It is simply due to different choices of degree of freedom by effective theory and field theory. We also show that they give equivalent description of the dynamics of chiral fermions.
We study the spectrum of the 1D Dirac Hamiltonian encompassing the bound and scattering states of a fermion distorted by a static background built from $delta$-function potentials. We distinguish between mass-spike and electrostatic $delta$-potentials. Differences in the spectra arising depending on the type of $delta$-potential studied are thoroughly explored.
The transfer matrix in lattice field theory connects the covariant and the initial data frameworks; in spin foam models, it can be written as a composition of elementary cellular amplitudes/propagators. We present a framework for discrete spacetime classical field theory in which solutions to the field equations over elementary spacetime cells may be amalgamated if they satisfy simple gluing conditions matching the composition rules of cellular amplitudes in spin foam models. Furthermore, the formalism is endowed with a multisymplectic structure responsible for local conservation laws. Some models within our framework are effective theories modeling a system at a given scale. Our framework allows us to study coarse graining and the continuum limit.

We study classification of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with both rotation symmetry and Abelian internal symmetries in one, two, and three dimensions. By working out this classification, on the one hand, we demonstrate the recently proposed correspondence principle between crystalline topological phases and those with internal symmetries through explicit block-state constructions. We find that for the precise correspondence to hold it is necessary to change the central extension structure of the symmetry group by the $mathbb{Z}_2$ fermion parity. On the other hand, we uncover new classes of intrinsically fermionic SPT phases that are only enabled by interactions, both in 2D and 3D with four-fold rotation. Moreover, several new instances of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type theorems for Majorana-type fermionic SPTs are obtained and we discuss their interpretations from the perspective of bulk-boundary correspondence.
We study Faraday rotation in the quantum relativistic limit. Starting from the photon self-energy in the presence of a constant magnetic field the rotation of the polarization vector of a plane electromagnetic wave which travel along the fermion-antifermion gas is studied. The connection between Faraday Effect and Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) is discussed. The Faraday Effect is also investigated for a massless relativistic (2D+1)-dimensional fermion system which is derived by using the compactification along the dimension parallel to the magnetic field. The Faraday angle shows a quantized behavior as Hall conductivity in two and three dimensions.
