The magnetic excitations of charge-stripe ordered La2NiO4.11 where investigated using polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering to determine the magnetic excitations of the charge stripe electrons. We observed a magnetic excitation mode consistent with the gapped quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlations of the charge stripe electrons previously observed in La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 1/3 and x = 0.275.
The stability of charge ordered phases is doping dependent, with different materials having particularly stable ordered phases. In the half filled charge ordered phases of the cuprates this occurs at one eighth doping, whereas in charge-stripe ordered La2-xSrxNiO4+delta there is enhanced stability at one third doping. In this paper we discuss the known details of the charge-stripe order in La2-xSrxNiO4+delta, and how these properties lead to the one third doping stability.
The magnetic excitation spectrums of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 were studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We found the magnetic excitation spectrum of x = 0.45 from the ordered Ni^2+ S = 1 spins to match that of checkerboard charge ordered La(1.5)Sr(0.5)NiO(4). The distinctive asymmetry in the magnetic excitations above 40 meV was observed for both doping levels, but an additional ferromagnetic mode was observed in x = 0.45 and not in the x = 0.4. We discuss the origin of crossover in the excitation spectrum between x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 with respect to discommensurations in the charge stripe structure.
A combined neutron and x-ray diffraction study of TbBaFe2O5 reveals a rare checkerboard to charge ordering transition. TbBaFe2O5 is a mixed valent compound where Fe2+/Fe3+ ions are known to arrange into a stripe charge-ordered state below TV = 291 K, that consists of alternating Fe2+/Fe3+ stripes in the basal plane running along the b direction. Our measurements reveal that the stripe charge-ordering is preceded by a checkerboard charge-ordered phase between TV < T < T* = 308 K. The checkerboard ordering is stabilized by inter-site coulomb interactions which give way to a stripe state stabilized by orbital ordering.
High-Tc superconductivity in cuprates is generally believed to arise from carrier doping an antiferromagnetic Mott (AFM) insulator. Theoretical proposals and emerging experimental evidence suggest that this process leads to the formation of intriguing electronic liquid crystal phases. These phases are characterized by ordered charge and/or spin density modulations, and thought to be intimately tied to the subsequent emergence of superconductivity. The most elusive, insulating charge-stripe crystal phase is predicted to occur when a small density of holes is doped into the charge-transfer insulator state, and would provide a missing link between the undoped parent AFM phase and the mysterious, metallic pseudogap. However, due to experimental challenges, it has been difficult to observe this phase. Here, we use surface annealing to extend the accessible doping range in Bi-based cuprates and achieve the lightly-doped charge-transfer insulating state of a cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. In this insulating state with a charge transfer gap at the order of ~1 eV, using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover a unidirectional charge-stripe order with a commensurate 4a0 period along the Cu-O-Cu bond. Importantly, this insulating charge-stripe crystal phase develops before the onset of the pseudogap and the formation of the Fermi surface. Our work provides new insights into the microscopic origin of electronic inhomogeneity in high-Tc cuprates.
The local electronic structure of the SrO-terminated SrTiO3(001) surface was explored using scanning tunneling microscopy. At low bias voltages in the empty states, a unidirectional structure with a periodicity of 3 unit cells, superimposed on a c(2 x 2) reconstructed structure, was found to develop along the crystallographic a axis. This structure indicates a charge-ordered stripe induced by carrier doping from oxygen vacancies in the SrO and the subsurface TiO2 planes. In the filled states, localized deep in-gap states were observed in addition to large energy gaps in the tunneling spectra. This result represents inelastic tunneling due to significant electron-lattice interaction associated with unidirectional lattice distortion in the SrO-terminated surface.
