Deep Inelastic Scattering and Drell-Yan experiments have measured a light flavor asymmetry in the proton sea. The excess of dbar over ubar quarks can be understood in many models, but the ratio dbar(x)/ubar(x) measured by Fermilab E866 has not been successfully described. Fermilab E-906 will probe the kinematic dependence of this ratio with better resolution and extend it to higher x. We have developed a hybrid model that includes both perturbative and non-perturbative contributions to the proton sea. A meson cloud formalism is used to represent the non-perturbative fluctuation of the proton into meson-baryon states. We include perturbative processes by using a statistical model that uses Fock states of quarks, antiquarks and gluons to represent the parton distributions of the bare hadrons in the meson cloud. We compare our results to the E866 data.

We present a nonperturbative, first-principles numerical approach for time-dependent problems in the framework of quantum field theory. In this approach the time evolution of quantum field systems is treated in real time and at the amplitude level. As a test application, we apply this method to QED and study photon emission from an electron in a strong, time-dependent external field. Coherent superposition of electron acceleration and photon emission is observed in the nonperturbative regime.

Chiral Effective Field Theory ($chi$EFT) has been extensively used to study the $NN$ interaction during the last three decades. In Effective Field Theories (EFTs) the renormalization is performed order by order including the necessary counter terms. Due to the strong character of the $NN$ interaction a non-perturbative resummation is needed. In this work we will review some of the methods proposed to completely remove cutoff dependencies. The methods covered are renormalization with boundary conditions, renormalization with one counter term in momentum space (or equivalently substractive renormalization) and the exact $N/D$ method. The equivalence between the methods up to one renormalization condition will be checked showing results in the $NN$ system. The exact $N/D$ method allows to go beyond the others, and using a toy model it is shown how it can renormalize singular repulsive interactions.
Recently, Saad, Shenker and Stanford showed how to define the genus expansion of Jackiw-Teitelboim quantum gravity in terms of a double-scaled Hermitian matrix model. However, the models non-perturbative sector has fatal instabilities at low energy that they cured by procedures that render the physics non-unique. This might not be a desirable property for a system that is supposed to capture key features of quantum black holes. Presented here is a model with identical perturbative physics at high energy that instead has a stable and unambiguous non-perturbative completion of the physics at low energy. An explicit examination of the full spectral density function shows how this is achieved. The new model, which is based on complex matrix models, also allows for the straightforward inclusion of spacetime features analogous to Ramond-Ramond fluxes. Intriguingly, there is a deformation parameter that connects this non-perturbative formulation of JT gravity to one which, at low energy, has features of a super JT gravity.
We try to separate the perturbative and non-perturbative contributions to the plaquette of pure SU(3) gauge theory. To do this we look at the large-n asymptotic behaviour of the perturbation series in order to estimate the contribution of the as-yet uncalculated terms in the series. We find no evidence for the previously reported Lambda^2 contribution to the gluon condensate. Attempting to determine the conventional Lambda^4 condensate gives a value of approximately 0.03(2) GeV^4, in reasonable agreement with sum rule estimates, though with very large uncertainties.

We discuss a non-perturbative $T$-matrix approach to investigate the microscopic structure of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Utilizing an effective Hamiltonian which includes both light- and heavy-parton degrees of freedoms. The basic two-body interaction includes color-Coulomb and confining contributions in all available color channels, and is constrained by lattice-QCD data for the heavy-quark free energy. The in-medium $T$-matrices and parton spectral functions are computed selfconsistently with full account of off-shell properties encoded in large scattering widths. We apply the $T$-matrices to calculate the equation of state (EoS) for the QGP, including a ladder resummation of the Luttinger-Ward functional using a matrix-log technique to account for the dynamical formation of bound states. It turns out that the latter become the dominant degrees of freedom in the EoS at low QGP temperatures indicating a transition from parton to hadron degrees of freedom. The calculated spectral properties of one- and two-body states confirm this picture, where large parton scattering rates dissolve the parton quasiparticle structures while broad resonances start to form as the pseudocritical temperature is approached from above. Further calculations of transport coefficients reveal a small viscosity and heavy-quark diffusion coefficient.
