Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) may be a good observational window on Quantum Gravity physics. Within last few years, all major Gamma-ray experiments have published results from the search for LIV with variable astrophysical sources: gamma-ray bursts with detectors on-board satellites and Active Galactic Nuclei with ground-based experiments. In this paper, the recent time-of-flight studies with unpolarized photons published from the space and ground based observations are reviewed. Various methods used in the time delay searches are described, and their performance discussed. Since no significant time-lag value was found within experimental precision of the measurements, the present results consist of 95% confidence cevel limits on the Quantum Gravity scale on the linear and quadratic terms in the standard photon dispersion relations.

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO) is one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays currently operating at TeV and PeV energies. Recently the LHAASO experiment detected ultra-high-energy~(UHE; $E_{gamma}gtrsim 100~mathrm{TeV}$) photon emissions up to $1.4~mathrm{PeV}$ from twelve astrophysical gamma-ray sources. We point out that the detection of cosmic photons at such energies can constrain the photon self-decay motivated by superluminal Lorentz symmetry violation~(LV) to a higher level, thus can put strong constraints to certain LV frameworks. Meanwhile, we suggest that the current observation of the PeV-scale photon with LHAASO may provide hints to permit a subluminal type of Lorentz violation in the proximity of the Planckian regime, and may be compatible with the light speed variation at the scale of $3.6times 10^{17}~mathrm{GeV}$ recently suggested from gamma-ray burst~(GRB) time delays. We further propose detecting PeV photons coming from extragalactic sources with future experiments, based on LV-induced threshold anomalies of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair-production, as a crucial test of subluminal Lorentz violation. We comment that these observations are consistent with a D-brane/string-inspired quantum-gravity framework, the space-time foam model.
A general framework for tests of Lorentz invariance with electromagnetic waves is presented, allowing for operators of arbitrary mass dimension. Signatures of Lorentz violations include vacuum birefringence, vacuum dispersion, and anisotropies. Sensitive searches for violations using sources such as active galaxies, gamma-ray bursts, and the cosmic microwave background are discussed. Direction-dependent dispersion constraints are obtained on operators of dimension 6 and 8 using gamma-ray bursts and the blazar Markarian 501. Stringent constraints on operators of dimension 3 are found using 5-year data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. No evidence appears for isotropic Lorentz violation, while some support at one sigma is found for anisotropic violation.

We discuss some of the tests of Lorentz symmetry made possible by astrophysical observations of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, gamma-rays, and neutrinos. These are among the most sensitive tests of Lorentz symmetry violation because they are the highest energy phenomena known to man.

We present a model of gravity based on spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. We start from a model with spontaneously broken symmetries for a massless 2-tensor with a linear kinetic term and a nonderivative potential, which is shown to be equivalent to linearized general relativity, with the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons playing the role of the gravitons. We apply a bootstrap procedure to the model based on the principle of consistent coupling to the total energy energy-momentum tensor. Demanding consistent application of the bootstrap to the potential term severely restricts the form of the latter. Nevertheless, suitable potentials exists that permit stable vacua. It is shown that the resulting model is equivalent, at low energy, to General Relativity in a fixed gauge.
Gravity can be regarded as a consequence of local Lorentz (LL) symmetry, which is essential in defining a spinor field in curved spacetime. The gravitational action may admit a zero-field limit of the metric and vierbein at a certain ultraviolet cutoff scale such that the action becomes a linear realization of the LL symmetry. Consequently, only three types of term are allowed in the four-dimensional gravitational action at the cutoff scale: a cosmological constant, a linear term of the LL field strength, and spinor kinetic terms, whose coefficients are in general arbitrary functions of LL and diffeomorphism invariants. In particular, all the kinetic terms are prohibited except for spinor fields, and hence the other fields are auxiliary. Their kinetic terms, including those of the LL gauge field and the vierbein, are induced by spinor loops simultaneously with the LL gauge field mass. The LL symmetry is necessarily broken spontaneously and hence is nothing but a hidden local symmetry, from which gravity is emergent.
