The discovery of large number of Cepheid variables in far-off galaxies offers a unique opportunity to determine the accurate distance of the host galaxy through their period-luminosity relation. The main aim of the present study is to identify short-period and relatively faint Cepheids in the crowded field of M31 disk which was observed as part of the Nainital Microlensing Survey. The Cousins R and I-band photometric observations were obtained with a 1-m telescope on more than 150 nights over the period between November 1998 to January 2002. The data was analysed using the pixel technique and the mean magnitudes of the Cepheids were determined by correlating their pixel fluxes with the corresponding PSF-fitted photometric magnitudes. Here, we report identification of 39 short-period Cepheid variables in the M31 disk. Most of the Cepheids are found with R (mean) ~ 20-21 mag and the dense phase coverage of our observations enabled us to identify Cepheids with periods as short as 3.4 days The frequency-period distribution of these Cepheids peaks at logP ~ 0.9 and 1.1 days.

We report our first microlensing candidate NMS-E1 towards M31 from the data accumulated during the four years of Nainital Microlensing Survey. Cousin R and I band observations of ~13x13 field in the direction of M31 have been carried out since 1998 and data is analysed using the pixel technique proposed by the AGAPE collaboration. NMS-E1 lies in the disk of M31 at alpha = 0:43:33.3 and delta = +41:06:44, about 15.5 arcmin to the South-East direction of the center of M31. The degenerate Paczy{n}ski fit gives a half intensity duration of ~59 days. The photometric analysis of the candidate shows that it reached R~20.1 mag at the time of maximum brightness and the colour of the source star was estimated to be (R-I)_0 ~ 1.1 mag. The microlensing candidate is blended by red variable stars; consequently the light curves do not strictly follow the characteristic Paczy{n}ski shape and achromatic nature. However its long period monitoring and similar behaviour in R and I bands supports its microlensing nature.
Searching for microlensing in M31 using automated superpixel surveys raises a number of difficulties which are not present in more conventional techniques. Here we focus on the problem that the list of microlensing candidates is sensitive to the selection criteria or cuts imposed and some subjectivity is involved in this. Weakening the cuts will generate a longer list of microlensing candidates but with a greater fraction of spurious ones; strengthening the cuts will produce a shorter list but may exclude some genuine events. We illustrate this by comparing three analyses of the same data-set obtained from a 3-year observing run on the INT in La Palma. The results of two of these analyses have been already reported: Belokurov et al. (2005) obtained between 3 and 22 candidates, depending on the strength of their cuts, while Calchi Novati et al. (2005) obtained 6 candidates. The third analysis is presented here for the first time and reports 10 microlensing candidates, 7 of which are new. The Nainital-Cape survey is a dedicated ongoing survey programme to search for and study pulsational variability in chemically peculiar (CP) stars to understand their internal structure and evolution. The main aims of this survey are to find new pulsating Ap and Am stars in the northern and southern hemisphere and to perform asteroseismic studies of these new pulsators. The survey is conducted using high-speed photometry. The candidate stars were selected on the basis of having Stromgren photometric indices similar to those of known pulsating CP stars. Over the last decade a total of 337 candidate pulsating CP stars were observed for the Nainital-Cape survey, making it one of the longest ground-based surveys for pulsation in CP stars in terms of time span and sample size. The previous papers of this series presented seven new pulsating variables and 229 null results. In this paper we present the light curves, frequency spectra and the various astrophysical parameters of the 108 additional CP stars observed since the last reported results. We have also tabulated the basic physical parameters of the known roAp stars. As part of establishing the detection limits in the Nainital-Cape survey, we investigated the scintillation noise level at the two observing sites used in this survey, Sutherland and Nainital, by comparing the combined frequency spectra stars observed from each location. Our analysis shows that both the sites permit the detection of variations on the order of 0.6 milli-magnitude (mmag) in the frequency range 1-4 mHz, with Sutherland being marginally better, on average.
We present the first M31 candidate microlensing events from the Microlensing Exploration of the Galaxy and Andromeda (MEGA) survey. MEGA uses several telescopes to detect microlensing towards the nearby Andromeda galaxy, M31, in order to establish whether massive compact objects are a significant contribution to the mass budget of the dark halo of M31. The results presented here are based on observations with the Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma, during the 1999/00 and 2000/01 observing seasons. In this data set, 14 variable sources consistent with microlensing have been detected, 12 of which are new and 2 have been reported previously by the POINT-AGAPE group. A preliminary analysis of the spatial and timescale distributions of the candidate events support their microlensing nature. We compare the spatial distributions of the candidate events and of long-period variable stars, assuming the chances of finding a long-period variable and a microlensing event are comparable. The spatial distribution of our candidate microlensing events is more far/near side asymmetric than expected from the detected long-period variable distribution. The current analysis is preliminary and the asymmetry not highly significant, but the spatial distribution of candidate microlenses is suggestive of the presence of a microlensing halo.
The Mt. Suhora M,dwarf survey searching for pulsations in low mass main sequence stars has acquired CCD photometry of 46 M,dwarf stars during the first year of the project (Baran et al 2011). As a by-product of this search hundreds field stars have been checked for variability. This paper presents our initial result of a search for periodic variables in field stars observed in the course of the survey. On the basis of the periodicity and the shape of the light curves, eight new variables has been detected, among which five are $delta$ Scuti stars and three likely RR Lyrae stars. Although variation in one of the stars has been previously detected, it was classified incorrectly. To support our classification, in August 2010, we performed spectroscopic observations to derive spectral types and luminosity classes for all eight variable stars.
