We have measured near normal incidence far infrared (FIR) reflectivity spectra of a single crystal of TbMnO3 from 10K to 300K in the spectral range of 50 cm$^{-1}$ to 700 cm$^{-1}$. Fifteen transverse optic (TO) and longitudinal optic (LO) modes are identified in the imaginary part of the dielectric function $epsilon_2$($omega$) and energy loss function Im(-1/$epsilon$($omega$)), respectively. Some of the observed phonon modes show anomalous softening below the magnetic transition temperature T$_N$ (~ 46K). We attribute this anomalous softening to the spin-phonon coupling caused by phonon modulation of the super-exchange integral between the Mn$^{3+}$ spins. The effective charge of oxygen (Z$_O$) calculated using the measured LO-TO splitting increases below T$_N$.

We measured the temperature dependent infrared reflectivity spectra of TbMnO3 with the electric field of light polarized along each of the three crystallographic axes. We analyzed the effect, on the phonon spectra, of the different phase transitions occurring in this material. We show that the antiferromagnetic transition at TN renormalizes the phonon parameters along the three directions. Our data indicate that the electromagnon, observed along the a direction, has an important contribution to the building of the dielectric constant. Only one phonon, observed along the c-axis, has anomalies at the ferroelectric transition. This phonon is built mostly from Mn vibrations, suggesting that Mn displacements are closely related to the formation of the ferroelectric order.
We have carried out temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurements of YMnO3 over the temperature range 50 - 1303 K, covering both the antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition (70 K), as well as the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition (1258 K). Measurements are accompanied by first principles calculations of phonon spectra for the sake of interpretation and analysis of the measured phonon spectra in the room temperature ferroelectric (P63cm) and high temperature paraelectric (P63/mmc) hexagonal phases of YMnO3. The comparison of the experimental and first-principles calculated phonon spectra highlight unambiguously a spin-phonon coupling character in YMnO3. This is further supported by the pronounced differences in the magnetic and non-magnetic phonon calculations. The calculated atomistic partial phonon contributions of the Y and Mn atoms are not affected by inclusion of magnetic interactions, whereas the dynamical contribution of the O atoms is found tochange. This highlights the role of the super-exchange interactions between the magnetic Mn cations, mediated by O bridges. Phonon dispersion relations have also been calculated, in the entire Brillouin zone, for both the hexagonal phases. In the high-temperature phase, unstable phonon mode at the K point is highlighted. The displacement pattern at the K-point indicates that the freezing of this mode along with the stable mode at the {Gamma}-point may lead to a stabilization of the low-temperature (P63cm) phase, and inducing ferroelectricity. Further, we have also estimated the mode Gruneisen parameter and volume thermal expansion behavior. The latter is found to agree with the available experimental data.

We perform systematic first-principles calculations to investigate the spin-phonon coupling (SPC) of Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) monolayer (ML). It is found that the Eg phonon mode at 211.8 cm^{-1} may have a SPC as large as 3.19 cm^{-1}, as it directly alters the superexchange interaction along the Cr-Te-Cr pathway. Furthermore, the strength of SPC of the CGT ML can be further enhanced by an in-plane compressive strain. These results provide useful insights for the understanding of SPC in novel two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors and may guide the design of spintronic and spin Seebeck materials and devices.
We discuss the first infrared reflectivity measurement on a BiFeO3 single crystal between 5 K and room temperature. The 9 predicted ab-plane E phonon modes are fully and unambiguously determined. The frequencies of the 4 A1 c-axis phonons are found. These results settle issues between theory and data on ceramics. Our findings show that the softening of the lowest frequency E mode is responsible for the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant, indicating that the ferroelectric transition in BiFeO3 is soft-mode driven.
Dirac semimetal PdTe2 single-crystal temperature-dependent ultrafast carrier and phonon dynamics were studied using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Two distinct carrier and coherent phonons relaxation processes were identified in the 5 K - 300 K range. Quantitative analysis revealed a fast relaxation process ({tau}_f) occurring on a subpicosecond time scale which originated from electron-phonon thermalization. This was followed by a slower relaxation process ({tau}_s) with a time scale of ~ 7-9.5 ps which originated from phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination. Two significant vibrational modes resolved at all measured temperatures and corresponded to Te atoms in-plane (E_g), and out-of-plane (A_1g), motion. As temperature increased both phonon modes softened markedly. A_1g mode frequency monotonically decreased as temperature increased. Its damping rate remained virtually unchanged. As expected, E_g decreased uniformly as temperatures rose. At temperatures above 80 K, there was insignificant change. Test results suggested that pure dephasing played an important role in the relaxation processes. PdTe2 phonon is thought responsible for its superconductive properties. Examining phonons behavior should improve the understanding of its complex superconductivity.
