One observes strong suppression effects for hard probes, e.g. the production of J/psi or high-pT particles, in nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions at RHIC. Surprisingly, the magnitude of the suppression is quite similar to that at SPS. In order to establish whether these features arise due to the presence of a thermalized system of quarks and gluons formed in the course of the collision, one should investigate the impact of suppression mechanisms which do not explicitly involve such a state. We calculate shadowing for gluons in the Glauber-Gribov theory and propose a model invoking a rapidity-dependent absorptive mechanism motivated by energy-momentum conservation effects. Furthermore, final state suppression due to interaction with co-moving matter (hadronic or pre-hadronic) has been shown to describe data at SPS. We extend this model by including the backward reaction channel, i.e. recombination of open charm, which is estimated directly from pp data at RHIC. Strong suppression of charmonium both in pA and AA collisions at LHC is predicted. This is in stark contrast with the predictions of models assuming QGP formation and thermalization of heavy quarks.

We report on our recent evaluation of the s-channel cut contribution to J/psi hadroproduction. We show that it is likely significantly larger than the usual cut contribution of the colour-singlet model (CSM), which is known to underestimate the experimental measurements. Here the s-channel cut develops for configurations with off-shell quarks in the bound state. A correct treatment of its contribution requires the introduction of a four point function, partially constrained by gauge invariance and limiting behaviours at small and large momenta. When the unconstrained degrees of freedom are fixed to reproduce the Tevatron data, we show that RHIC data are remarkably well reproduced down to very low transverse momenta P_T without need of resummation of initial-state gluon effects. This unique feature might be typical of s-channel cut contribution.
We study the enhancement of $c bar c$ pair production that takes place in central heavy ion collisions due to the formation of clusters of strings. These clusters produce heavy flavors more efficiently due to their higher color. We discuss the competition between this mechanism and the well-known screening of color charge, which, above a critical string density, reduces strongly the probability of binding these $c bar c$ pairs to form $J/Psi$ particles. The dependence of $J/Psi$ suppression on the centrality shows a peak at both RHIC and LHC energies corresponding to the percolation critical density.
The associated production of J/psi + gamma at the LHC is studied within the NRQCD framework. The signal we focus on is the production of a J/psi and an isolated photon produced back-to-back, with their transverse momenta balanced. It is shown that even for very large values of transverse momentum (pT of the order of 50 GeV) the dominant contribution to this process is not fragmentation. This is because of the fact that fragmentation-type contributions to the cross-section come from only a q q(bar) initial state, which is suppressed at the LHC. We identify gg-initiated diagrams higher-order in alpha(s) which do have fragmentation-type vertices. We find, however, that the contribution of these diagrams is negligibly small.
We study inclusive heavy quarkonium production with definite polarizations in polarized proton-proton collisions using the non-relativistic QCD color-octet mechanism. We present results for rapidity distributions of cross sections and spin asymmetries for the production of J/psi and psi with specific polarizations in polarized p-p collisions at sqrt s = 200 GeV and 500 GeV at the RHIC within the PHENIX detector acceptance range.
We argue that the s-channel cut contribution to J/psi hadroproduction can be significantly larger than the usual cut contribution of the color-singlet mechanism, which is known to underestimate the experimental measurements. A scenario accounting for intermediate $cbar(c)$ interactions is proposed that reproduces the data at low- and mid-range transverse momenta P_T from the Fermilab Tevatron and BNL Relativistiv Heavy Ion Collider. The J/psi produced in this manner are polarized predominantly longitudinally.
