We examine structural and dynamical properties of quantum resonances associated with an avoided crossing and identify the parameter shifts where these properties attain maximal or extreme values, first at a general level, and then for a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator, of the type commonly found in quantum optics. Finally the results obtained are exemplified and applied to optimize the fidelity and speed of quantum gates in trapped ions.

In a recent publication [Phys. Rev. A 79, 065602 (2009)] it was shown that an avoided-crossing resonance can be defined in different ways, according to level-structural or dynamical aspects, which do not coincide in general. Here a simple $3$-level system in a $Lambda$ configuration is discussed, where the difference between both definitions of the resonance may be observed. We also discuss the details of a proposed experiment to observe this difference, using microwave fields coupling hyperfine magnetic sublevels in alkali atoms.
We investigate ways to optimize adiabaticity and diabaticity in the Landau-Zener model with non-uniform sweeps. We show how diabaticity can be engineered with a pulse consisting of a linear sweep augmented by an oscillating term. We show that the oscillation leads to jumps in populations whose value can be accurately modeled using a model of multiple, photon-assisted Landau-Zener transitions, which generalizes work by Wubs et al. [New J. Phys. 7, 218 (2005)]. We extend the study on diabaticity using methods derived from optimal control. We also show how to preserve adiabaticity with optimal pulses at limited time, finding a non-uniform quantum speed limit.
Using the Wherl entropy, we study the delocalization in phase-space of energy eigenstates in the vicinity of avoided crossing in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. These avoided crossing, appearing at intermediate energies in a certain parameter region of the model, originate classically from pairs of trajectories lying in different phase space regions, which contrary to the low energy regime, are not connected by the discrete parity symmetry of the model. As coupling parameters are varied, a sudden increase of the Wherl entropy is observed for eigenstates close to the critical energy of the excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). This allows to detect when an avoided crossing is accompanied by a superposition of the pair of classical trajectories in the Husimi functions of eigenstates. This superposition yields an enhancement of dynamical tunneling, which is observed by considering initial Bloch states that evolve partially into the partner region of the paired classical trajectories, thus breaking the quantum-classical correspondence in the evolution of observables.
The response of a linear system to an external perturbation is governed by the Fourier limit, with the inverse of the interaction time constituting a lower limit for the system bandwidth. This does not hold for nonlinear systems, which can thus exhibit sub-Fourier behavior. The present work identifies a mechanism for sub-Fourier sensitivity in driven quantum systems, which relies on avoided crossing between Floquet states. Features up to three orders of magnitude finer than the Fourier limit are presented.
We study the existence and location of the resonances of a $2times 2$ semiclassical system of coupled Schrodinger operators, in the case where the two electronic levels cross at some point, and one of them is bonding, while the other one is anti-bonding. Considering energy levels just above that of the crossing, we find the asymptotics of both the real parts and the imaginary parts of the resonances close to such energies. This is a continuation of our previous works where we considered energy levels around that of the crossing.
