We present a numerical study of dephasing of electron spin ensembles in a diffusive quasi-one-dimensional GaAs wire due to the Dyakonov-Perel spin-dephasing mechanism. For widths of the wire below the spin precession length and for equal strength of Rashba and linear Dresselhaus spin-orbit fields a strong suppression of spin-dephasing is found. This suppression of spin-dephasing shows a strong dependence on the wire orientation with respect to the crystal lattice. The relevance for realistic cases is evaluated by studying how this effect degrades for deviating strength of Rashba and linear Dresselhaus fields, and with the inclusion of the cubic Dresselhaus term.

The current noise density S of a conductor in equilibrium, the Johnson noise, is determined by its temperature T: S=4kTG with G the conductance. The samples noise temperature Tn=S/(4kG) generalizes T for a system out of equilibrium. We introduce the noise thermal impedance of a sample as the amplitude of the oscillation of Tn when heated by an oscillating power. For a macroscopic sample, it is the usual thermal impedance. We show for a diffusive wire how this (complex) frequency-dependent quantity gives access to the electron-phonon interaction time in a long wire and to the diffusion time in a shorter one, and how its real part may also give access to the electron-electron inelastic time. These times are not simply accessible from the frequency dependence of S itself.
The out-of-plane g-factor g_perp for quasi-2D holes in a (100) GaAs heterostructure is studied using a variable width quantum wire. A direct measurement of the Zeeman splitting is performed in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the 2D plane. We measure an out-of-plane g-factor up to g_perp = 5, which is larger than previous optical studies of g_perp, and is approaching the long predicted but never experimentally verified out-of-plane g-factor of 7.2 for heavy holes.

The conductance threshold of a clean nearly straight quantum wire in which a single electron is bound is studied. This exhibits spin-dependent conductance anomalies on the rising edge to the first conductance plateau, near G=0.25(2e^{2}/h) and G=0.7(2e^{2}/h), related to a singlet and triplet resonances respectively. We show that the problem may be mapped on to an Anderson-type of Hamiltonian and calculate the energy dependence of the energy parameters in the resulting model.
Spatiotemporal spin dynamics under spin-orbit interaction is investigated in a (001) GaAs two-dimensional electron gas using magneto-optical Kerr rotation microscopy. Spin polarized electrons are diffused away from the excited position, resulting in spin precession because of the diffusion-induced spin-orbit field. Near the cancellation between spin-orbit field and external magnetic field, the induced spin precession frequency depends nonlinearly on the diffusion velocity, which is unexpected from the conventional linear relation between the spin-orbit field and the electron velocity. This behavior originates from an enhancement of the spin relaxation anisotropy by the electron velocity perpendicular to the diffused direction. We demonstrate that the spin relaxation anisotropy, which has been regarded as a material constant, can be controlled via diffusive electron motion.
We observe millisecond spin-flip relaxation times of donor-bound electrons in high-purity n-GaAs . This is three orders of magnitude larger than previously reported lifetimes in n-GaAs . Spin-flip times are measured as a function of magnetic field and exhibit a strong power-law dependence for fields greater than 4 T . This result is in qualitative agreement with previously reported theory and measurements of electrons in quantum dots.
