Detailed analysis of transport, magnetism and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on ultrathin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films with thicknesses from 3 to 70 unit cells resulted in the identification of a lower critical thickness for a non-metallic, non-ferromagnetic layer at the interface with the SrTiO3 (001) substrate of only 3 unit cells (~12 Angstrom). Furthermore, linear dichroism measurements demonstrate the presence of a preferred (x2-y2) in-plane orbital ordering for all layer thicknesses without any orbital reconstruction at the interface. A crucial requirement for the accurate study of these ultrathin films is a controlled growth process, offering the coexistence of layer-by-layer growth and bulk-like magnetic/transport properties.

Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$ were studied using transport and magnto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers the films become insulating and their magnetic character changes as they loose their simple ferromagnetic behavior. We observe a strong reduction in the magnetic moment which for 3 monolayers and below lies in the plane of the film. Exchange-bias behavior is observed below the critical thickness, and may point to induced antiferromagnetism in contact with ferromagnetic regions.
We report the observation of field-induced magnetization of BiFeO3 (BFO) in an ultrathin BFO/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) superlattice using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR). Our PNR results indicate parallel alignment of magnetization across BFO/LSMO interfaces. The study showed an increase in average magnetization on increasing applied magnetic field at 10K. We observed a saturation magnetization of 110 pm 15 kA/m (~0.8 {mu}B/Fe) for ultrathin BFO layer (~2 unit cell) sandwiched between ultrathin LSMO layers (~ 2 unit cell), which is much higher than the canted moment (0.03 {mu}B/Fe) in the bulk BFO. The macroscopic VSM results on superlattice clearly indicate superparamagnetic behavior typically observed in nanoparticles of manganites.
We studied the temperature dependence of the diagonal double-stripe spin order in one and two unit cell thick layers of FeTe grown on the topological insulator Bi_2Te_3 via spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. The spin order persists up to temperatures which are higher than the transition temperature reported for bulk Fe_1+yTe with lowest possible excess Fe content y. The enhanced spin order stability is assigned to a strongly decreased y with respect to the lowest values achievable in bulk crystal growth, and effects due to the interface between the FeTe and the topological insulator. The result is relevant for understanding the recent observation of a coexistence of superconducting correlations and spin order in this system.
Thin films of the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3 (SRO) show a varying easy magnetization axis depending on the epitaxial strain and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition with decreasing film thickness. We have investigated the magnetic properties of SRO thin films with varying thicknesses fabricated on SrTiO3(001) substrates by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Ru M2,3 edge. Results have shown that, with decreasing film thickness, the film changes from ferromagnetic to non-magnetic around 3monolayer thickness, consistent with previous magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The orbital magnetic moment perpendicular to the film was found to be ~ 0.1{mu}B/Ru atom, and remained nearly unchanged with decreasing film thickness while the spin magnetic moment decreases. Mechanism for the formation of the orbital magnetic moment is discussed based on the electronic structure of the compressively strained SRO film.
The Channel-Spark method was used for deposition of highly oriented ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films on NdGaO3 substrates. It was found that additional oxygen decreases the film quality suppressing the Curie temperature and metal-insulator transition below the room temperature. To achieve the best quality of the films the samples were either annealed in high vacuum at deposition temperature or even deposited in argon atmosphere with no oxygen annealing. For such films the resistive measurements showed a metallic behaviour in the interval 10-300 K in accordance with the high Curie point (Tc 350 K). Micro-Raman analysis indicate that the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films are well ordered, while some outgrowths show stoichiometrical deviations.
