The notion of singular reduction operators, i.e., of singular operators of nonclassical (conditional) symmetry, of partial differential equations in two independent variables is introduced. All possible reductions of these equations to first-order ODEs are are exhaustively described. As examples, properties of singular reduction operators of (1+1)-dimensional evolution and wave equations are studied. It is shown how to favourably enhance the derivation of nonclassical symmetries for this class by an in-depth prior study of the corresponding singular vector fields.
We study the two-dimensional Dirac operator with an arbitrary combination of electrostatic and Lorentz scalar $delta$-interactions of constant strengths supported on a smooth closed curve. For any combination of the coupling constants a rigorous description of the self-adjoint realizations of the operators is given and the qualitative spectral properties are described. The analysis covers also all so-called critical combinations of coupling constants, for which there is a loss of regularity in the operator domain. In this case, if the mass is non-zero, the resulting operator has an additional point in the essential spectrum, and the position of this point inside the central gap can be made arbitrary by a suitable choice of the coupling constants. The analysis is based on a combination of the extension theory of symmetric operators with a detailed study of boundary integral operators viewed as periodic pseudodifferential operators.
In this paper, we develop results in the direction of an analogue of Sjamaar and Lermans singular reduction of Hamiltonian symplectic manifolds in the context of reduction of Hamiltonian generalized complex manifolds (in the sense of Lin and Tolman). Specifically, we prove that if a compact Lie group acts on a generalized complex manifold in a Hamiltonian fashion, then the partition of the global quotient by orbit types induces a partition of the Lin-Tolman quotient into generalized complex manifolds. This result holds also for reduction of Hamiltonian generalized Kahler manifolds.
Let $H_0 = -Delta + V_0(x)$ be a Schroedinger operator on $L_2(mathbb{R}^ u),$ $ u=1,2,$ or 3, where $V_0(x)$ is a bounded measurable real-valued function on $mathbb{R}^ u.$ Let $V$ be an operator of multiplication by a bounded integrable real-valued function $V(x)$ and put $H_r = H_0+rV$ for real $r.$ We show that the associated spectral shift function (SSF) $xi$ admits a natural decomposition into the sum of absolutely continuous $xi^{(a)}$ and singular $xi^{(s)}$ SSFs. This is a special case of an analogous result for resolvent comparable pairs of self-adjoint operators, which generalises the known case of a trace class perturbation while also simplifying its proof. We present two proofs -- one short and one long -- which we consider to have value of their own. The long proof along the way reframes some classical results from the perturbation theory of self-adjoint operators, including the existence and completeness of the wave operators and the Birman-Krein formula relating the scattering matrix and the SSF. The two proofs demonstrate the equality of the singular SSF with two a priori different but intrinsically integer-valued functions: the total resonance index and the singular $mu$-invariant.
We construct the Green function for second-order elliptic equations in non-divergence form when the mean oscillations of the coefficients satisfy the Dini condition. We show that the Greens function is BMO in the domain and establish logarithmic pointwise bounds. We also obtain pointwise bounds for first and second derivatives of the Greens function.
The central result about fast rotating-flow structures is the Taylor-Proudman theorem (TPT) which connects various aspects of the dynamics. Taylors geometrical proof of TPT is reproduced and extended substantially, with Lies theory for general frozen-in laws and the consequent generalized invariant circulation theorems, to compressible flows and to $d$-dimensional Euclidean space ($mathbb{E}^{d}$) with $dge 3$. The TPT relatives, the reduced models (with particular interests on passive-scalar problems), the inertial (resonant) waves and the higher-order corrections, are discussed coherently for a comprehensive bird view of rotating flows in high spatial dimensions.
