This paper studies a specific metric on plane curves that has the property of being isometric to classical manifold (sphere, complex projective, Stiefel, Grassmann) modulo change of parametrization, each of these classical manifolds being associated to specific qualifications of the space of curves (closed-open, modulo rotation etc...) Using these isometries, we are able to explicitely describe the geodesics, first in the parametric case, then by modding out the paremetrization and considering horizontal vectors. We also compute the sectional curvature for these spaces, and show, in particular, that the space of closed curves modulo rotation and change of parameter has positive curvature. Experimental results that explicitly compute minimizing geodesics between two closed curves are finally provided
We consider, in the Euclidean setting, a conformal Yamabe-type equation related to a potential generalization of the classical constant scalar curvature problem and which naturally arises in the study of Ricci solitons structures. We prove existence and nonexistence results, focusing on the radial case, under some general hypothesis on the potential.
We prove that the geodesic equation for any semi-Riemannian metric of regularity $C^{0,1}$ possesses $C^1$-solutions in the sense of Filippov.
In this paper, we will prove the Weyls law for the asymptotic formula of Dirichlet eigenvalues on metric measure spaces with generalized Ricci curvature bounded from below.
We study timelike and null geodesics in a non-singular black hole metric proposed by Hayward. The metric contains an additional length-scale parameter $ell$ and approaches the Schwarzschild metric at large radii while approaches a constant at small radii so that the singularity is resolved. We tabulate the various critical values of $ell$ for timelike and null geodesics: the critical values for the existence of horizon, marginally stable circular orbit and photon sphere. We find the photon sphere exists even if the horizon is absent and two marginally stable circular orbits appear if the photon sphere is absent and a stable circular orbit for photons exists for a certain range of $ell$. We visualize the image of a black hole and find that blight rings appear even if the photon sphere is absent.
On four-dimensional closed manifolds we introduce a class of canonical Riemannian metrics, that we call weak harmonic Weyl metrics, defined as critical points in the conformal class of a quadratic functional involving the norm of the divergence of the Weyl tensor. This class includes Einstein and, more in general, harmonic Weyl manifolds. We prove that every closed four-manifold admits a weak harmonic Weyl metric, which is the unique (up to dilations) minimizer of the functional in a suitable conformal class. In general the problem is degenerate elliptic due to possible vanishing of the Weyl tensor. In order to overcome this issue, we minimize the functional in the conformal class determined by a reference metric, constructed by Aubin, with nowhere vanishing Weyl tensor. Moreover, we show that anti-self-dual metrics with positive Yamabe invariant can be characterized by pinching conditions involving suitable quadratic Riemannian functionals.
