Inelastic and elastic neutron scattering is used to study spin correlations in the quasi-one dimensional quantum antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3 in strong applied magnetic fields. A condensation of magnons and commensurate transverse long-range ordering is observe at a critical filed $H_c=9.5$ T. The field dependencies of the energies and polarizations of all magnon branches are investigated both below and above the transition point. Their dispersion is measured across the entire 1D Brillouin zone in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The critical wave vector of magnon spectrum truncation [Masuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 047210 (2006)] is found to shift from h_c 0.35 at H>H_c. A drastic reduction of magnon bandwidths in the ordered phase [Garlea et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 167202 (2007)] is observed and studied in detail. New features of the spectrum, presumably related to this bandwidth collapse, are observed just above the transition field.

Inelastic neutron scattering and bulk magnetic susceptibility studies of the quantum S=1/2 spin ladder system IPA-CuCl3 are performed under hydrostatic pressure. The pressure dependence of the spin gap $Delta$ is determined. At $P=1.5$ GPa it is reduced to $Delta=0.79$ meV from $Delta=1.17$ meV at ambient pressure. The results allow us to predict a soft-mode quantum phase transition in this system at P$_mathrm{c}sim 4$ GPa. The measurements are complicated by a proximity of a structural phase transition that leads to a deterioration of the sample.

We report single-crystal 51V NMR studies on volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2 2H2O, which is regarded as a quasi-two-dimensional frustrated magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In the 1/3 magnetization plateau above 28 T, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 indicates an excitation gap with a large effective g factor in the range of 4.6-5.9, pointing to magnon bound states. Below 26 T where the gap has closed, the NMR spectra indicate small internal fields with a Gaussian-like distribution, whereas 1/T1 shows a power-law-like temperature dependence in the paramagnetic state, which resembles a slowing down of spin fluctuations associated with magnetic order. We discuss the possibility of an exotic spin state caused by the condensation of magnon bound states below the magnetization plateau.
Quantum spin liquids (QSL) have generated considerable excitement as phases of matter with emergent gauge structures and fractionalized excitations. In this context, phase transitions out of QSLs have been widely discussed as Higgs transitions from deconfined to confined phases of a lattice gauge theory. However the possibility of a wider range of novel phases, occuring between these two limits, has yet to be systematically explored. In this Letter, we develop a formalism which allows for interactions between fractionalised quasiparticles coming from the constraint on the physical Hilbert space, and can be used to search for exotic, hidden phases. Taking pyrochlore spin ice as a starting point, we show how a U(1) QSL can give birth to abundant daughter phases, without need for fine--tuning of parameters. These include a (charged--) $mathbb{Z}_2$ QSL, and a supersolid. We discuss implications for experiment, and numerical results which support our analysis. These results are of broad relevance to QSL subject to a parton description, and offer a new perspective for searching exotic hidden phases in quantum magnets.
We present a 14N nuclear magnetic resonance study of a single crystal of CuBr4(C5H12N)2 (BPCB) consisting of weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders. Treating ladders in the gapless phase as Luttinger liquids, we are able to fully account for (i) the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at 250 mK and for (ii) the phase transition to a 3D ordered phase occuring below 110 mK due to weak interladder exchange coupling. BPCB is thus an excellent model system where the possibility to control Luttinger liquid parameters in a continuous manner is demonstrated and Luttinger liquid model tested in detail over the whole fermion band.
Spin liquid is a state of electron spins in which quantum fluctuation breaks magnetic ordering while maintaining spin correlation. It has been a central topic in magnetism because of its relevance to high-Tc superconductivity and topological states. However, utilizing spin liquid has been quite difficult. Typical spin liquid states are realized in one-dimensional spin systems, called quantum spin chains. Here, we show that a spin liquid in a spin-1/2 quantum chain generates and carries spin current via its long-range spin fluctuation. This is demonstrated by observing an anisotropic negative spin Seebeck effect along the spin chains in Sr2CuO3. The results show that spin current can flow even in an atomic channel owing the spin liquid state, which can be used for atomic spin-current wiring.
