We report an angular resolved photoemission study of Na0.73CoO2 where it is found that the renormalization of the quasiparticle (QP) dispersion changes dramatically upon a rotation from GM to GK. The comparison of the experimental data to the calculated band structure reveals that the QP-renormalization is most pronounced along the GK-direction, while it is significantly weaker along the GM-direction. We discuss the observed anisotropy in terms of multiorbital effects and point out the relevance of magnetic correlations for the band structure of Na0.73CoO2.

Metallic oxide SrVO3 represents a prototype system for the study of the mechanism behind thickness-induced metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) or crossover in thin films due to its simple cubic symmetry with one electron in the 3d state in the bulk. Here we report a deviation of chemical composition and distortion of lattice structure existing in the initial 3 unit cells of SrVO3 films grown on SrTiO3 (001) from its bulk form, which shows a direct correlation to the thickness-dependent MIT. In-situ photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy indicate a MIT at the critical thickness of ~3 unit cell (u.c.), which coincides with the formation of a (root2Xroot2)R45 surface reconstruction. However, atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy show depletion of Sr, change of V valence, thus implying the existence of a significant amount of oxygen vacancies in the 3 u.c. of SrVO3 near the interface. Transport and magneto-transport measurements further reveal that disorder, rather than electron correlations, is likely to be the main cause for the MIT in the SrVO3 ultrathin films.
A 20% substitution of Bi with La in the perovskite Bi1-xLaxFe0.5Sc0.5O3 system obtained under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions has been found to induce an incommensurately modulated structural phase. The room temperature X-ray and neutron powder diffraction patterns of this phase were successfully refined using the Imma(0,0,g)s00 superspace group (g=0.534(3)) with the modulation applied to Bi/La- and oxygen displacements. The modulated structure is closely related to the prototype antiferroelectric structure of PbZrO3 which can be considered as the lock-in variant of the latter with g =0.5. Below T_N = 220 K, the neutron diffraction data provide evidence for a long-range G-type antiferromagnetic ordering commensurate with the average Imma structure. Based on a general symmetry consideration, we show that the direction of the spins is controlled by the antisymmetric exchange imposed by the two primary structural distortions, namely oxygen octahedral tilting and incommensurate atomic displacements. The tilting is responsible for the onset of a weak ferromagnetism, observed in magnetization measurements, whereas the incommensurate displacive mode is dictated by the symmetry to couple a spin-density wave. The obtained results demonstrate that antisymmetric exchange is the dominant anisotropic interaction in Fe3+ based distorted perovskites with a nearly quenched orbital degree of freedom.
The magnetism in Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ has been investigated using thermodynamic measurements, first principles calculations, neutron diffraction and diffuse neutron scattering on single crystals. These data confirm that Mn$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ is a ferrimagnet below a Curie temperature of $T_C$ approximately 78K. The magnetism is anisotropic, with magnetization and neutron diffraction demonstrating that the moments lie within the basal plane of the trigonal structure. The saturation magnetization of approximately 1.6$mu_B$/Mn at 5K originates from the different multiplicities of the two antiferromagnetically-aligned Mn sites. First principles calculations reveal antiferromagnetic exchange for the three nearest Mn-Mn pairs, which leads to a competition between the ferrimagnetic ground state and three other magnetic configurations. The ferrimagnetic state results from the energy associated with the third-nearest neighbor interaction, and thus long-range interactions are essential for the observed behavior. Diffuse magnetic scattering is observed around the 002 Bragg reflection at 120K, which indicates the presence of strong spin correlations well above $T_C$. These are promoted by the competing ground states that result in a relative suppression of $T_C$, and may be associated with a small ferromagnetic component that produces anisotropic magnetism below $approx$330K.

In atomic physics, the Hund rule says that the largest spin and orbital state is realized due to the interplay of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the Coulomb interactions. Here, we show that in ferromagnetic solids the effective SOC and the orbital magnetic moment can be dramatically enhanced by a factor of $1/[1-(2U^prime-U-J_H)rho_0]$, where $U$ and $U^prime$ are the on-site Coulomb interaction within the same oribtals and between different orbitals, respectively, $J_H$ is the Hund coupling, and $rho_0$ is the average density of states. This factor is obtained by using the two-orbital as well as five-orbital Hubbard models with SOC. We also find that the spin polarization is more favorable than the orbital polarization, being consistent with experimental observations. This present work provides a fundamental basis for understanding the enhancements of SOC and orbital moment by Coulomb interactions in ferromagnets, which would have wide applications in spintronics.
LiCu2O2 is the first multiferroic cuprate to be reported and its ferroelectricity is induced by complex magnetic ordering in ground state, which is still in controversy today. Herein, we have grown nearly untwinned LiCu2O2 single crystals of high quality and systematically investigated their dielectric and ferroelectric behaviours in external magnetic fields. The highly anisotropic response observed in different magnetic fields apparently contradicts the prevalent bc- or ab- plane cycloidal spin model. Our observations give strong evidence supporting a new helimagnetic picture in which the normal of the spin helix plane is along the diagonal of CuO4 squares which form the quasi-1D spin chains by edge-sharing. Further analysis suggests that the spin helix in the ground state is elliptical and in the intermediate state the present c-axis collinear SDW model is applicable with some appropriate modifications. In addition, our studies show that the dielectric and ferroelectric measurements could be used as probes for the characterization of the complex spin structures in multiferroic materials due to the close tie between their magnetic and electric orderings.
