Joseph Pilsudiski is a Marshall and a Polish stateman who belongs to a noble Polish-Lithuanian family. Pilsudski grew up in an atmosphere full of talk of Russian tyranny and brutality in an attempt to quell the sense of Polish independence. His mother was one of the mothers who read to their children or told tales and poems about the greatness of Poland and its greatness. Pilsudski studied medicine in Krakow from 1885 to 1886. He was tried in 1887 on charges of involvement in a conspiracy against the tsar, and was sentenced to exile to eastern Siberia for five years.
