A modular, maintainable and extensible particle beam simulation architecture is presented. Design considerations for single particle, multi particle, and rms envelope simulations (in two and three dimensions) are outlined. Envelope simulation results have been validated against Trace3D. Hybridization with a physics-centric contol-system abstraction provides a convenient environment for rapid deployment of applications employing model-reference control strategies.

Monte Carlo simulations are widely used in many areas including particle accelerators. In this lecture, after a short introduction and reviewing of some statistical backgrounds, we will discuss methods such as direct inversion, rejection method, and Markov chain Monte Carlo to sample a probability distribution function, and methods for variance reduction to evaluate numerical integrals using the Monte Carlo simulation. We will also briefly introduce the quasi-Monte Carlo sampling at the end of this lecture.
Finesse is a fast interferometer simulation program. For a given optical setup, it computes the light field amplitudes at every point in the interferometer assuming a steady state. To do so, the interferometer description is translated into a set of linear equations that are solved numerically. For convenience, a number of standard analyses can be performed automatically by the program, namely computing modulation-demodulation error signals, transfer functions, shot-noise-limited sensitivities, and beam shapes. Finesse can perform the analysis using the plane-wave approximation or Hermite-Gauss modes. The latter allows computation of the properties of optical systems like telescopes and the effects of mode matching and mirror angular positions.
Engineering a Web search engine offering effective and efficient information retrieval is a challenging task. This document presents our experiences from designing and developing a Web search engine offering a wide spectrum of functionalities and we report some interesting experimental results. A rather peculiar design choice of the engine is that its index is based on a DBMS, while some of the distinctive functionalities that are offered include advanced Greek language stemming, real time result clustering, and advanced link analysis techniques (also for spam page detection).
A modified version of the Plasma Beat-Wave Accelerator scheme is introduced and analyzed, which is based on autoresonant phase-locking of the nonlinear Langmuir wave to the slowly chirped beat frequency of the driving lasers via adiabatic passage through resonance. This new scheme is designed to overcome some of the well-known limitations of previous approaches, namely relativistic detuning and nonlinear modulation or other non-uniformity or non-stationarity in the driven Langmuir wave amplitude, and sensitivity to frequency mismatch due to measurement uncertainties and density fluctuations and inhomogeneities.
We report a positioning method for transparent targets with an accuracy of SI{2}{mu m} for a compact laser proton accelerator. The positioning system consists of two light-emitting diodes (LED), a long working distance objective and two charge coupled devices (CCD) for illumination, imaging and detection, respectively. We developed a defocusing method making transparent targets visible as phase objects and applied it to our system. Precise positioning of transparent targets can be realized by means of minimizing the image contrast of the phase objects. Fast positioning based on the relationship between the radius of spherical aberration ring and defocusing distance is also realized. Laser proton acceleration experiments have been performed to demonstrate the reliability of this positioning system.
