An embeddability criterion for zero-dimensional metrizable topological spaces in zero-dimensional metrizable topological groups is given. A space which can be embedded as a closed subspace in a zero-dimensional metrizable group but is not strongly zero-dimensional is constructed; thereby, an example of a metrizable group with noncoinciding dimensions ind and dim is obtained. It is proved that one of Kuleszas zero-dimensional metrizable spaces cannot be embedded in a metrizable zero-dimensional group.

A topological group $G$ is called an $M_omega$-group if it admits a countable cover $K$ by closed metrizable subspaces of $G$ such that a subset $U$ of $G$ is open in $G$ if and only if $Ucap K$ is open in $K$ for every $KinK$. It is shown that any two non-metrizable uncountable separable zero-dimenisional $M_omega$-groups are homeomorphic. Together with Zelenyuks classification of countable $k_omega$-groups this implies that the topology of a non-metrizable zero-dimensional $M_omega$-group $G$ is completely determined by its density and the compact scatteredness rank $r(G)$ which, by definition, is equal to the least upper bound of scatteredness indices of scattered compact subspaces of $G$.

A theorem of A. Weil asserts that a topological group embeds as a (dense) subgroup of a locally compact group if and only if it contains a non-empty precompact open set; such groups are called locally precompact. Within the class of locally precompact groups, the authors classify those groups with the following topological properties: Dieudonne completeness; local realcompactness; realcompactness; hereditary realcompactness; connectedness; local connectedness; zero-dimensionality. They also prove that an abelian locally precompact group occurs as the quasi-component of a topological group if and only if it is precompactly generated, that is, it is generated algebraically by a precompact subset.
We discuss various modifications of separability, precompactnmess and narrowness in topological groups and test those modifications in the permutation groups $S(X)$ and $S_{<omega}(X)$.

We answer several questions of I.Protasov and E.Zelenyuk concerning topologies on groups determined by T-sequences. A special attention is paid to studying the operation of supremum of two group topologies.
We consider left-invariant distances $d$ on a Lie group $G$ with the property that there exists a multiplicative one-parameter group of Lie automorphisms $(0, infty)rightarrowmathtt{Aut}(G)$, $lambdamapstodelta_lambda$, so that $ d(delta_lambda x,delta_lambda y) = lambda d(x,y)$, for all $x,yin G$ and all $lambda>0$. First, we show that all such distances are admissible, that is, they induce the manifold topology. Second, we characterize multiplicative one-parameter groups of Lie automorphisms that are dilations for some left-invariant distance in terms of algebraic properties of their infinitesimal generator. Third, we show that an admissible left-invariant distance on a Lie group with at least one nontrivial dilating automorphism is biLipschitz equivalent to one that admits a one-parameter group of dilating automorphisms. Moreover, the infinitesimal generator can be chosen to have spectrum in $[1,infty)$. Fourth, we characterize the automorphisms of a Lie group that are a dilating automorphisms for some admissible distance. Finally, we characterize metric Lie groups admitting a one-parameter group of dilating automorphisms as the only locally compact, isometrically homogeneous metric spaces with metric dilations of all factors. Such metric spaces appear as tangents of doubling metric spaces with unique tangents.
