The infinitesimal unitary transformation, introduced recently by F.Wegner, to bring the Hamiltonian to diagonal (or band diagonal) form, is applied to the Hamiltonian theory as an exact renormalization scheme. We consider QED on the light front to illustrate the method. The low-energy generated interaction, induced in the renormalized Hamiltonian to the order alpha, is shown to be negative to insure together with instantaneous term and perturbative photon exchange the bound states for positronium. It is possible to perform the complete complete elimination of the eegamma-vertex in the instant form frame; this gives rise to the cutoff independent ebar{e}-interaction governed by generated and instantaneous terms. The well known result for the singlet-triplet splitting $7/6 alpha^2 Ryd$ is recovered in the nonrelativistic limit as long as $la << m$. We examine the mass and wave function renormalization. The ultraviolet divergencies, associated with a large transverse momentum, are regularized by the regulator arising from the unitary transformation. The severe infrared divergencies are removed if all diagrams to the second order, arising from flow equations method and normal-ordering Hamiltonian, are taken into account. The electron (photon) mass in the renormalized Hamiltonian vary with UV cutoff in accordance with 1-loop renormalization group equations. This indicates to an intimete connection between Wilsons renormalization and the flow equation method. The advantages of the method in comparison with the naive renormalisation group approach are discussed.

Modified similarity renormalization of Hamiltonians is proposed, that performes by means of flow equations the similarity transformation of Hamiltonian in the particle number space. This enables to renormalize in the energy space the field theoretical Hamiltonian and makes possible to work in a severe trancated Fock space for the renormalized Hamiltonian.
The advantage of Pauli-Villars regularization in quantum field theory quantized on the light front is explained. Simple examples of scalar $lambdavarphi^4$ field theory and Yukawa-type model are used. We give also an example of nonperturbative calculation in the theory with Pauli-Villars fields, using for that a model of anharmonic oscillator modified by inclusion of ghost variables playing the role similar to Pauli-Villars fields.

Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory constitutes a framework for the non-perturbative solution of invariant masses and correlated parton amplitudes of self-bound systems. By choosing light-front gauge and adopting a basis function representation, we obtain a large, sparse, Hamiltonian matrix for mass eigenstates of gauge theories that is solvable by adapting the ab initio no-core methods of nuclear many-body theory. Full covariance is recovered in the continuum limit, the infinite matrix limit. We outline our approach and discuss the computational challenges.
Certain gauge transformations may act non-trivially on physical states in quantum electrodynamics (QED). This observation has sparked the yet unresolved question of how to characterize allowed boundary conditions for gauge theories. Faddeev and Jackiw proposed to impose Gauss law on the action to find the Hamiltonian reduced theory of QED. The reduction eliminates the scalar gauge mode, renders the theory manifestly gauge invariant and the symplectic form non-singular. In this work we show that while the predictions of the reduced theory coincide with those of conventional QED for scattering events, it is experimentally distinguishable. Quantum interference of charges traveling along time-like Wilson loops that encircle (but remain clear of) electric fields is sensitive to a relative phase shift due to an interaction with the scalar potential. This is the archetypal electric Aharonov-Bohm effect and does not exist in the reduced theory. Despite its prediction over six decades ago, and in contrast to its well known magnetic counterpart, this electric Aharonov-Bohm phenomenon has never been observed. We present a conclusive experimental test using superconducting quantum interferometry. The Hamiltonian reduction renders a theta term non-topological. We comment on consequences for semi-classical gravity, where it may alleviate a problem with the measure.
We investigate the scattering of a quark on a heavy nucleus at high energies using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) formalism, which is the first application of the tBLFQ formalism in QCD. We present the real-time evolution of the quark wave function in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the Color Glass Condensate. The quark and the nucleus color field are simulated in the QCD SU(3) color space. We calculate the total and the differential cross sections, and the quark distribution in coordinate and color spaces using the tBLFQ approach. We recover the eikonal cross sections in the eikonal limit. We find that the differential cross section from the tBLFQ simulation is in agreement with a perturbative calculation at large $p_perp$, and it deviates from the perturbative calculation at small $p_perp$ due to higher-order contributions. In particular, we relax the eikonal limit by letting the quark carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta. We study the sub-eikonal effect on the quark through the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark with different longitudinal momentum, and we find the sub-eikonal effect to be sizable. Our results can significantly reduce the theoretical uncertainties in small $p_perp$ region which has important implications to the phenomenology of the hadron-nucleus and deep inelastic scattering at high energies.
