We consider cosmological models with a scalar field with equation of state $wge 1$ that contract towards a big crunch singularity, as in recent cyclic and ekpyrotic scenarios. We show that chaotic mixmaster oscillations due to anisotropy and curvature are suppressed, and the contraction is described by a homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann equation if $w>1$. We generalize the results to theories where the scalar field couples to p-forms and show that there exists a finite value of $w$, depending on the p-forms, such that chaotic oscillations are suppressed. We show that $Z_2$ orbifold compactification also contributes to suppressing chaotic behavior. In particular, chaos is avoided in contracting heterotic M-theory models if $w>1$ at the crunch.

We discuss various superstring effective actions and, in particular, their common sector which leads to the so-called pre-big-bang cosmology (cosmology in a weak coupling limit of heterotic superstring). Then, we review the main ideas of the Horava-Witten theory which is a strong coupling limit of heterotic superstring theory. Using the conformal relationship between these two theories we present Kasner asymptotic solutions of Bianchi type IX geometries within these theories and make predictions about possible emergence of chaos. Finally, we present a possible method of generating Horava-Witten cosmological solutions out of the well-known general relativistic pre-big-bang solutions.
Bianchi type I and type IX (Mixmaster) geometries are investigated within the framework of Hov{r}ava-Witten cosmology. We consider the models for which the fifth coordinate is a $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold while the four coordinates are such that the 3-space is homogeneous and has geometry of Bianchi type I or IX while the rest six dimensions have already been compactified on a Calabi-Yau space. In particular, we study Kasner-type solutions of the Bianchi I field equations and discuss Kasner asymptotics of Bianchi IX field equations. We are able to recover the isotropic 3-space solutions found by Lukas {it et al}. Finally, we discuss if such Bianchi IX configuration can result in chaotic behaviour of these Hov{r}ava-Witten cosmologies.
A period of slow contraction with equation of state w > 1, known as an ekpyrotic phase, has been shown to flatten and smooth the universe if it begins the phase with small perturbations. In this paper, we explore how robust and powerful the ekpyrotic smoothing mechanism is by beginning with highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic initial conditions and numerically solving for the subsequent evolution of the universe. Our studies, based on a universe with gravity plus a scalar field with a negative exponential potential, show that some regions become homogeneous and isotropic while others exhibit inhomogeneous and anisotropic behavior in which the scalar field behaves like a fluid with w=1. We find that the ekpyrotic smoothing mechanism is robust in the sense that the ratio of the proper volume of the smooth to non-smooth region grows exponentially fast along time slices of constant mean curvature.
We establish a precise relation between mixed boundary conditions for scalar fields in asymptotically anti de Sitter spacetimes and the equation of state of the dual fluid. We provide a detailed derivation of the relation in the case of five bulk-dimensions for scalar fields saturating the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. As a concrete example, we discuss the five dimensional scalar-tensor theories describing a constant speed of sound.
We provide a very general argument showing that the Universe must have kept its quantum memories from an epoch much earlier than $60$ e-foldings before the end of inflation. The point is that a generic system of enhanced memory storage capacity exhibits a phenomenon of memory burden. Due to its universal nature this effect must be applicable to de Sitter since the latter has a maximal memory storage capacity thanks to its Gibbons-Hawking entropy. The primordial information pattern encoded in de Sitter memory initially costs very little energy. However, because of Gibbons-Hawking evaporation, the memory burden of the pattern grows in time and increasingly back reacts on the evaporation process. After a finite time the memory burden becomes unbearable and de Sitter quantum breaks. If inflation ended not long before its quantum break-time, the imprints of the primordial memory pattern can be observable. This provides a qualitatively new type of window in the Universes beginning, a sort of cosmic quantum hair.
