We extend a recent computation of the dependence of the free energy, F, on the noncommutative scale $theta$ to theories with very different UV sensitivity. The temperature dependence of $F$ strongly suggests that a reduced number of degrees of freedom contributes to the free energy in the non-planar sector, $F_{rm np}$, at high temperature. This phenomenon seems generic, independent of the UV sensitivity, and can be traced to modes whose thermal wavelengths become smaller than the noncommutativity scale. The temperature dependence of $F_{rm np}$ can then be calculated at high temperature using classical statistical mechanics, without encountering a UV catastrophe even in large number of dimensions. This result is a telltale sign of the low number of degrees of freedom contributing to $F$ in the non-planar sector at high temperature. Such behavior is in marked contrast to what would happen in a field theory with a random set of higher derivative interactions.

We clearly formulate and study further a conjecture of effective field theory interaction with gravity in the cosmological context. The conjecture stems from the fact that the melding of quantum theory and gravity typically indicates the presence of an inherent UV cutoff. Taking note of the physical origin of this UV cutoff, that the background metric fluctuations does not allow QFT to operate with a better precision than the background space resolution, we conjecture that the converse statement might also be true. That is, an effective field theory could not perceive the background space with a better precision than it is allowed by its intrinsic UV scale. Some of the subtleties and cosmological implications of this conjecture are explored.
By combining the jet quenching Monte Carlo JEWEL with a realistic hydrodynamic model for the background we investigate the sensitivity of jet observables to details of the medium model and quantify the influence of the energy and momentum lost by jets on the background evolution. On the level of event averaged source terms the effects are small and are caused mainly by the momentum transfer.
FeSe is classed as a Hunds metal, with a multiplicity of $d$ bands near the Fermi level. Correlations in Hunds metals mostly originate from the exchange parameter emph{J}, which can drive a strong orbital selectivity in the correlations. The Fe-chalcogens are the most strongly correlated of the Fe-based superconductors, with $d_{xy}$ the most correlated orbital. Yet little is understood whether and how such correlations directly affect the superconducting instability in Hunds systems. By applying a recently developed high-fidelity emph{ab initio} theory, we show explicitly the connections between correlations in $d_{xy}$ and the superconducting critical temperature $T_{c}$. Starting from the emph{ab initio} results as a reference, we consider various kinds of excursions in parameter space around the reference to determine what controls $T_{c}$. We show small excursions in $J$ can cause colossal changes in $T_{c}$. Additionally we consider changes in hopping by varying the Fe-Se bond length in bulk, in the free standing monolayer M-FeSe, and M-FeSe on a SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate (M-FeSe/STO). The twin conditions of proximity of the $d_{xy}$ state to the Fermi energy, and the strength of $J$ emerge as the primary criteria for incoherent spectral response and enhanced single- and two-particle scattering that in turn controls $T_{c}$. Using constrained RPA, we show further that FeSe in monolayer form (M-FeSe) provides a natural mechanism to enhance $J$. We explain why M-FeSe/STO has a high $T_{c}$, whereas M-FeSe in isolation should not. Our study opens a paradigm for a unified understanding what controls $T_{c}$ in bulk, layers, and interfaces of Hunds metals by hole pocket and electron screening cloud engineering.
The spinor-helicity formalism has proven to be very efficient in the calculation of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory, while the loop tree duality (LTD) representation of multi-loop integrals exhibits appealing and interesting advantages with respect to other approaches. In view of the most recent developments in LTD, we exploit the synergies with the spinor-helicity formalism to analyse illustrative one- and two-loop scattering processes. We focus our discussion on the local UV renormalisation of IR and UV finite amplitudes and present a fully automated numerical implementation that provides efficient expressions which are integrable directly in four space-time dimensions.
1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ is host to coexisting strongly-correlated phases including charge density waves (CDWs) and an unusual Mott transition at low temperature. Here, we investigate coherent phonon oscillations in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ using a combination of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) and time-resolved reflectivity (TRR). Perturbation by a femtosecond laser pulse triggers a modulation of the valence band binding energy at the $Gamma$-point, related to the Mott gap, that is consistent with the in-plane CDW amplitude mode frequency. By contrast, TRR measurements show a modulation of the differential reflectivity comprised of multiple frequencies belonging to the distorted CDW lattice modes. Comparison of the temperature dependence of coherent and spontaneous phonons across the CDW transition shows that the amplitude mode intensity is more easily suppressed during perturbation of the CDW state by the optical excitation compared to other modes. Our results clearly identify the relationship of the in-plane CDW amplitude mode with the Mott phase in 1$T$-TaSe$_{2}$ and highlight the importance of lattice degrees of freedom.
