The experimental capability of recognizing the presence of b quarks in complex hadronic final states has addressed the attention towards final states with bbar{b} pairs for observing the production of the Higgs boson at the LHC, in the intermediate Higgs mass range. We point out that double parton scattering processes are going to represent a sizeable background to the process.

In this work we explore the sensitivity to the Higgs self-coupling $lambda$ in the production of two Higgs bosons via vector boson scattering at the LHC. Although these production channels, concretely $W^+W^- to HH$ and $ ZZ to HH$, have lower rates than gluon-gluon fusion, they benefit from being tree level processes, being independent of top physics and having very distinctive kinematics that allow to obtain very clean experimental signatures. This makes them competitive channels concerning the sensitivity to the Higgs self-coupling. In order to give predictions for the sensitivity to this coupling, we first study the role of $lambda$ at the subprocess level, both in and beyond the Standard Model, to move afterwards to the LHC scenario. We characterize the $ppto HHjj$ case first and then provide quantitative results for the values of $lambda$ that can be probed at the LHC in vector boson scattering processes after considering the Higgs boson decays. We focus mainly in $ppto bbar{b}bbar{b}jj$, since it has the largest signal rates, and also comment on the potential of other channels, such as $ppto bbar{b}gammagamma jj$, as they lead to cleaner, although smaller, signals. Our whole study is performed for a center of mass energy of $sqrt{s}=14$ TeV and for various future expected LHC luminosities.
We study the $W^+W^-$ and $Z^0Z^0$ electroweak boson production in double parton scattering using QCD evolution equations for double parton distributions. In particular, we analyze the impact of splitting terms in the evolution equations on the double parton scattering cross sections. Unlike the standard terms, the splitting terms are not suppressed for large values of the relative momentum of two partons in the double parton scattering. Thus, they play an important role which we discuss in detail for the single splitting contribution to the cross sections under the study.
We examine present data for double parton scattering at LHC and discuss their energy dependence from its earliest measurements at the ISR. Different models for the effective cross-section are considered and their behavior studied for a variety of selected final states. We point out that data for pp ->4 jets or pp -> quarkonium pair indicate the effective cross-section to increase with energy. We compare this set of data with different models, including one inspired by our soft gluon resummation model for the impact parameter distribution of partons.
Vector-boson pair production is an important background for Higgs boson and new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider LHC. We have calculated the loop-induced gluon-fusion process gg -> WW -> leptons, allowing for arbitrary invariant masses of the intermediate W bosons. This process contributes at O(alpha_s^2) relative to quark-antiquark annihilation, but its importance is enhanced by the large gluon flux at the LHC and by experimental cuts employed in Higgs boson searches. We find that gg -> WW provides only a moderate correction (ca. 5%) to the inclusive W-pair production cross section at the LHC. However, after taking into account realistic experimental cuts, the gluon-fusion process becomes significant and increases the theoretical WW background estimate for Higgs searches in the pp -> H -> WW -> leptons channel by approximately 30%.

The Large Hadron Collider witnesses the highest ever production cross-section of double parton scattering processes. The production of a Z-boson along with two jets from double parton scattering provides a unique opportunity to explore the kinematics of double parton scattering processes and their dependence on the scale of the second interaction. The experimental measurement of this process is largely contaminated by Z + jets production from single parton scattering. In this paper, fragmentation properties of a jet are explored to check their sensitivity towards double parton scattering. The present study is performed using simulated Z + jets events, produced with textsc{madgraph} and textsc{powheg} Monte-Carlo event generators, hadronized and parton showered using textsc{pythia}8. The effect of different hadronization model on the discrimination based on the fragmentation properties of a jet is also investigated by using events simulated with textsc{herwig}++. It is observed that discrimination based on the fragmentation properties of a jet can significantly suppress the background from single parton scattering, which results into 40--50% gain in the contribution of double parton scattering.
