A mechanism is suggested by which the dynamics of confinement could be responsible for the fermion mass matrix. In this approach the large top quark Yukawa coupling is generated naturally during confinement, while those of the other quarks and leptons stem from non-renormalizable couplings at the Planck scale and are suppressed. Below the confinement scale(s) the effective theory is minimal supersymmetric $SU(5)$ or the supersymmetric standard model. Particles in the $bar 5$ representations of $SU(5)$ are fundamental while those in the $10$ and $5$ are composite. The standard model gauge group is weakly coupled and predictions of unification can be preserved. A hierarchy in confinement scales helps generate a hierarchical spectrum of quark and lepton masses and ensures the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is nearly diagonal. However, the most natural outcome is that the strange quark is heavier than the charm quark; additional structure is required to evade this conclusion. No attempt has been made to address the issues of $SU(5)$ breaking, SUSY breaking, doublet/triplet splitting or the $mu$ parameter. While the models presented here are neither elegant nor complete, they are remarkable in that they can be analyzed without uncontrollable dynamical assumptions.

Local supersymmetry (SUSY) provides an attractive framework for the incorporation of gravity and unification of gauge interactions within Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). Its breakdown can lead to a variety of models with softly broken SUSY at low energies. In this review article we focus on the SUSY extension of the Standard Model (SM) with an extra U(1)_{N} gauge symmetry originating from a string-inspired E_6 grand unified gauge group. Only in this U(1) extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) inspired by E_6 GUTs the right-handed neutrinos can be superheavy providing a mechanism for the generation of the lepton and baryon asymmetry of the Universe. The particle content of this exceptional supersymmetric standard model (E_6SSM) includes three 27 representations of the E_6 group, to ensure anomaly cancellation, plus a pair of SU(2)_W doublets as required for gauge coupling unification. Thus E_6SSM involves extra exotic matter beyond the MSSM. We consider symmetries that permit to suppress non-diagonal flavour transitions and rapid proton decay, as well as gauge coupling unification, the breakdown of the gauge symmetry and the spectrum of Higgs bosons in this model. The possible Large Hadron Collider (LHC) signatures caused by the presence of exotic states are also discussed.
We consider composite two-Higgs doublet models based on gauge-Yukawa theories with strongly interacting fermions generating the top-bottom mass hierarchy. The model features a single universal Higgs-Yukawa coupling, $ g $, which is identified with the top quark $ gequiv g_t sim mathcal{O}(1) $. The top-bottom mass hierarchy arises by soft breaking of a $ mathbb{Z}_2 $ symmetry by a condensate of strongly interacting fermions. A mass splitting between vector-like masses of the confined techni-fermions controls this top-bottom mass hierarchy. This mechanism can be present in a variety of models based on vacuum misalignment. For concreteness, we demonstrate it in a composite two-Higgs scheme.

We describe a realistic, renormalizable, supersymmetric ``quindecuplet model in which the top quark, left handed bottom quark, and up-type Higgs boson are composite, with a compositeness scale $sim 1-3$ TeV. The top-Higgs Yukawa coupling is a dynamically generated strong interaction effect, and is naturally much larger than any other Yukawa coupling. The light quark doublets and right-handed up-type quarks are also composite but at higher energies; the hierarchy of quark masses and mixings is due to a hierarchy in the compositeness scales. Flavor changing neutral currents are naturally suppressed, as is baryon number violation by Planck-scale dimension five operators. The model predicts that the most easily observable effects would be on $b$-quark physics and on the $rho$ parameter. In particular a small negative $Deltarho=-epsilon$ leads to $Delta R_b> +2epsilon$. There are effects on $B$ meson mixing and on flavor-changing neutral-current $b$-quark decays to leptons which might be detectable, but not on $brightarrow sgamma$. The model also suggests the supersymmetry-breaking mass for the right handed top squark might be considerably larger than that of the left handed top squark.
We propose a new higher-dimensional mechanism for solving the Hierarchy Problem. The Weak scale is generated from a large scale of order the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy. However, this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric (which is a slice of AdS_5 spacetime). This mechanism relies on the existence of only a single additional dimension. We demonstrate a simple explicit example of this mechanism with two three-branes, one of which contains the Standard Model fields. The experimental consequences of this scenario are new and dramatic. There are fundamental spin-2 excitations with mass of weak scale order, which are coupled with weak scale as opposed to gravitational strength to the standard model particles. The phenomenology of these models is quite distinct from that of large extra dimension scenarios; none of the current constraints on theories with very large extra dimensions apply.

String instanton Yukawa corrections from Euclidean D-branes are investigated in an effective Standard Model theory obtained from the minimal U(3)xU(2)xU(1) D-brane configuration. In the case of the minimal chiral and Higgs spectrum, it is found that superpotential contributions are induced by string instantons for the perturbatively forbidden entries of the up and down quark mass matrices. Analogous non-perturbative effects generate heavy Majorana neutrino masses and a Dirac neutrino texture with factorizable Yukawa couplings. For this latter case, a specific example is worked out where it is shown how this texture can reconcile the neutrino data.
